Edit :

It occurs to me that it doesn't explicitly say "free" in the tweet.

However, news sites have published articles saying that it was going to be free :
Edit 2 :

Polygon is now stating that the PS+ version of the game will require a fee to upgrade to the PS5 version :

Edit 3 :

Confirmed free upgrade for PS+ owners :

Thank you J JaksGhost

Well, from their website

If you already own FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE for the PlayStation 4 (physical or digital version) and own a PlayStation 5, you can download the free FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE PlayStation 5 enhancement update. * Please note the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake available to PlayStation Plus members is not eligible for the PS5 digital version upgrade. This update does not include FF7R EPISODE INTERmission. FF7R EPISODE INTERmission can be purchased separately. An internet connection is required to obtain the free PlayStation 5 enhancement update. However, if you have purchased FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE (physical edition) for PlayStation 4, and own the PlayStation 5 digital edition (the model without a disc drive) then you are not eligible to download the upgrade.

* The PlayStation®5 version of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and all related updates are required to play FF7R EPISODE INTERmission. You are eligible to receive a free PS5™ digital version of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE if you already either (i) own a PS4™ digital version of the game or (ii) own a PS4™ disc version of the game and also own a PS5™ console with a disc drive (you must insert the disc each time you wish you to download or play the PS5™ digital version of the game). Please note the PS4™ version of Final Fantasy VII Remake available to PlayStation Plus members is not eligible for the PS5™ digital version upgrade. Some additional restrictions may apply.

Generally I'm opposed to paying for upgrading to newer hardware (we're paying for the hw for chrissake). I'm currently playing the ps4 version of Death Stranding on PS5 for that exact reason.

But you paid scraps for a goty game barely a year after launch.

Devils advocate: they should just withgo the upgrade option ps+ and release it again on ps+ for PS5.

Finally I have a reason to play it on PS5. Would‘ve never paid for the upgrade, but getting it for free places the game a few dozen games higher in my backlog.

Then there's the whole ordeal of: you pay for an upgrade that's useless when you don't have sub to ps+. What a mess.

Another slap in the face. They literally couldn't have handled this worse. I don't get pissed off easily, but I'm pissed off by this.
They have so fucked over PS4 FF7R disc owners who also own a PS5 and PS+ subscription.

I do not understand why you disallow upgrading PS+ versions. You think between a PS4 version and PS5 version that someone is going to pay full price for the same game?

The fact that both Uncharted and Mortal Shell are doing this brings back memories of online pass.

Square Enix are smart. Its always best to wait when dealing with them so as not to fall for their skulduggery.

If this free, it’s not a smart it’s a scam.

I do however highly doubt it’s free but who fuck knows at this point.
I own the ps+ version and I do not own the ps5 copy or ps4 copy for that matter, but still what a slap in the face. Even if not free since the cost would be way less than buying a ps4 copy.

My tears. Exclusive to gamepass. Forever.
Should’ve been so from the begining. Embarrissing to say the least. Not sure why but this reminds me of the latest treat we got via PS+ Godfall. Greedy pubs are the worst 🤮

lol so:
- Offer it on Ps+ but announce you won't be able to upgrade.
- Make people who want the upgrade buy the retail version
- Wait until sales of the upgrade slow down
- Announce you'll be able to upgrade the Ps+ version after all

But cool I guess for those who waited.

You might as well throw your toys out of the pram for having bought the game in the sale just prior to the announcement it was being given as part of PS+ (like I did). Or even whine that you bought it full-price at launch before it was offered in a sale...

Its sad, some of you will complain about anything.

I like to think Sony realized it was error to give PS5 the bastardized (not upgraded) versions of games. Maybe they just want to sell some dlc, but my reasoning is better.

A freebie is a freebie. They gave the game away to all PS+ subscribers, albeit the PS4 version.

Now they are giving away the upgrade for free.

The game pretty crazy production values and no doubt cost them 100-200mil to produce.

I think some of you are mixed up.

The PS5 upgrade was never available to purchase. It was always free. It was available to people who bought the PS4 disc or digital base game. It was just not available to the PS+ PS4 version (which is stupid imo). Now they're going to make the always free PS5 upgrade available to the PS+ PS4 version on Wednesday. That is all.

The only problem is because of that silly decision before, PS+ subscribers with a PS5 who wanted the free upgrade had to either buy the PS4 disc or digital base game to get the free upgrade (the cheaper way), or buy the PS5 version straight up.

The upgrade itself was always free. It's the intermission episode that cost money. And still does.

Polygon is now stating that the PS+ version of the game will require a fee to upgrade to the PS5 version :

They only say:

Correction: A previous version of this post mistakenly said the upgrade from PS4 to PS5 is free. Players must pay for the upgrade. Square Enix hasn’t specified pricing.

What's their source? Square hasn't said anything. So for now I'll go by how it always was, free.

From Square's own site:
Yes. If you already own FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE (physical or digital edition) for the PlayStation 4 and own a PlayStation 5, you can upgrade for free to FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE for PlayStation 5.* This free enhancement update does not include the new episode featuring Yuffie. The new episode featuring Yuffie can be purchased separately. An internet connection is required to obtain the free PlayStation 5 enhancement update. However, if you have purchased FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE (physical edition) for PlayStation 4, and own the PS5 digital edition (the model without a disc drive) then you are not eligible for the upgrade.

*PlayStation Plus members who own a PlayStation 5 and have received FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE for PlayStation 4 as part of the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection are eligible for the free PlayStation 5 enhancement update program from 22 December 2021. Please note that an active PlayStation Plus subscription is required to maintain access to the content.

Should have been the standard for day 1 and the fact that FFVII is not the only game which doesn't allow upgrade for PS+ versions is bullshit of the highest magnitude.

Should been like that since the day it landed on ps+. But i already beated the game and have no reason to play it again so soon.

Also im not paying for an upgrade.

Might buy the game when all the episodes are done and the story is complete.

The game landed on PS+ in March and the upgrade didn't go live until June, and it's free. You don't know where to yell so you're just screaming at the clouds to feel included in the mob.
