Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

That's like saying a 99 Potions cheat is out of place because you can buy that many potions later on.
I mean I guess it's a cheat so it doesn't really matter either way. But you can get Diablos pretty early on and be rocking Enc-None within the first few hours of the game.

Having a button combo able to toggle it on/off though is definitely a QoL improvement, so 🤷‍♂️. At worst it'll make for some interesting "low level" guides and at best it'll help someone enjoy the game a lot more than they would have otherwise, so I'm not dissing it or anything. Just noting that it seems out of place.

Don't know bout you guys but I'm 3 hours in and I'm surprised how well this still plays.
And it looks like it's belongs between IX and X visually thanks to the updates which helps.
But man this is what I've been missing.
This is my Final Fantasy

I linked to this in my earlier post but it feels like I should share this in the game's OT as well:

Story time.

This game came out a few weeks after I barely survived an automobile accident. My older brother worked for Blockbuster at the time, and brought me a PS1 and this game to play in the hospital and I continued playing it after I got home. I had short term memory loss - and on top of that I had trouble forming short term memories in my brain. I probably played the first 3-4 hours of this game 100 times (or more, I can't really recall) before I finally figured out what was going on, how the systems in the game worked, how to optimize your team, and what was happening in the story.

As the story progressed and I learned that the characters in the game were also suffering from memory afflictions, I was flabbergasted. I remember thinking "even if this affliction I suffer from is permanent, I'm lucky to be alive and my life will march forward."

A few weeks later I started re-gaining my ability to form short term memories. I attribute a lot of that to this game in particular. As such, this game means a lot to me.

Oh hang on, is the whole game in 4:3? I thought people were referencing the FMVs

I play it in 4:3 on my PSP fine but I can imagine it looking much worse on Switch

Edit: FF7 was also like this and I thought it was fine.

The entire game is 4:3. Go back and look at the screenshot section of the OP, for example.

There are cheat indicators on the left-hand black bar, but otherwise it's all contained in the 4:3 section of the screen.

You can get Diablos early but I think you forgot how much AP it takes to get enc-none haha

Yeah FF7 was the same. I didn't think it was much of an issue personally.

Im not sure why I bought this. I still haven’t finished my 9 playthrough or Grandia or Secret of Mana. The little that I did play looked pretty good I thought. The backgrounds are definitely a little blurry. I’m playing on the switch though so maybe the other consoles look better in that regard. Still it’s nice to have the game playable for a new generation that might have missed it when it originally released.

Another day, another hour of my lunch break burned up mostly playing Triple Triad. Got me the Quistis, Mini Mog, and Ifrit cards to basically pile drive through most everything. Finishing off my hand now with Biggs and Wedge as well as the Marlboro card. I also got the Diff rule to successfully spread in Balamb so I'm farming cards like a mofo. Now I'm getting ready for the Dollet mission where I'll kill everyone but Seifer and have him farm all the good abilities from my GFs so I can start carding all the regular enemies I encounter. This game is nutso.

I'm playing on Switch so I'm not sure, but I believe others here (or on Reddit, can't remember where I read) said that the in-game cheats didn't affect trophies at all.

Thanks. I really want to play with encounters none and 3x speed but also want to collect trophies.

At least for 6 might I suggest Project Atmaweapon?

Fixes and replaces the graphics in the entire game. Also lets you choose between different ones, including going full classic or finish the job Square more than half-assed and go full Amano (Sprites based on the original Amano artwork, which look really great if different).
Wow never knew this was a thing. I'll have to check that out, thanks!

I started my playthrough of the OG version, managed to beat elvoret and pass the SeeD exam so that's one less gaming albatross around my neck!

So far I'm really liking it. Weird is accurate. I'm running into the unexpected all over the place when it comes to pacing, scene format, game mechanics, all sorts.
And for all the Better Junction Your GFs LOL jokes that have been made over the years, I think this system is ten times more interesting than your average MP bar. Complex at first glance, but satisfying to explore.

And the presentation! The FMV pre-rendered backgrounds being combined with real-time characters is a real treat for the PS1, and so often too!

Ol' pixel-face cleans up quite nicely at 1440p with perspective-correct texturing and vertex stabilization as well:

What the fuck is this opener even, I thought this would be way later in the game. Like, these two already knowing eachother and Rinoa trying to cheer Squall up and get him to be less introverted or something :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Glad you are enjoying it. My favorite FF game. My only personal complaints about the remaster is squalls face (I like his longer head and weirder hair) and the battle menu lag. Still enjoying the game a ton, its been a while.

Her suckering up to him get explained later.

Anyone else experiencing this thing where the flashing "hand" cursor from the in-game menus persists as a flickering afterimage after quitting out of the game? I.e., after you're back in the OS, the screen flickers in areas where the hand cursor appeared, and stays there for a long time, gradually fading. (Not sure if this is limited to the PC version, might very well be happening on the console version on TVs too, I dunno.)

I was ready to join the FFVIIIR defense force, but uh ... not anymore. I'm not risking a ruined monitor. I've been gaming a long time, never seen a game have this sort of effect on a monitor before. Nice QA job, Dotemu.

Other people posted a thread about it, and someone posted a video of the problem. None of these are mine.

Just finished the first "Disc". 11 hours on the clock, Squall level 8 with everyone else being level 9 except Rinoa at 11 (her starting level) and Irvine at 13 (his starting level).

This game is so wacky, the story makes absolutely no sense and it only gets worse from here. I love it.

I love the basketball court scene so much.
Never have I seen a story fall to bits so quickly.
My face everytime I get to that part on a replay

Still will always love this game, goofy ass story, flaws an all though.
The speed and health cheats get rid of 90% of my annoyance with the amount of grind there is, so grinding out those magic draws and running round in a circle outside the Shumi village to get 99 ultimas on everybody goes from taking 10 hours to like two, so that's a plus.

Ultimecia is such a weak villan story wise. She's suddenly mentioned an becomes the big bad, gets hyped up by people because of how bad she is.......then has a couple of text boxes at the end and has a odd accent, that's it.
Also, I find it funny, after all the years I wondered about how she got Griever, all the fan thories I read etc,
Turns out She just yoinked it from Squall via her draw command during their first fight when she was Edea.

All in all, I have always loved revisiting this glorious messy game and the remaster will happily be my go to in the future for all my "friendship, peace and love is the key to beating Time Compression" needs.

Everybody: Hey, Laguna, do you REALLY think Frindship, love and promises will save us from Time compression?
