Final Fantasy XII – PS2 Original vs. The Zodiac Age Remaster Graphics Comparison

I like that the dialogue font isn't all-caps anymore - it's more readable that way - but I definitely would have preferred the old "thicker" font they had for the HUD. The new font does look an awful lot like the PS4 system font...
I'm not a fan of the DOF either and don't like the higher saturation in the remaster.

It's my only chance to play it on PS4 though and the new music is worth it alone, so I'll get it either way.

Is it just me or have they added some kind of new lighting technique?

Haha!

IIRC, this is because in the PS2 version NPCs have 3 LOD levels, and it will quickly switch to lower poly levels when the camera is away from them. you won't really see it on low res CRT screens but emulator magnifies the issue.

Apparently the remaster uses the highest level all the way.

Can't wait to play this again, I looked up the last time I played it and it's been nearly 10 years.

I am waiting on my CE dispatch email.

I lost more hours to this game than I care to admit. I was also in college at the time. I don't think I could ever find the time to play it again. Which sucks because this is looking pretty darn good so far. I wish they showed more outdoor areas though (not in a city).

Looks really good. The art style holds up pretty well.

Petty sidenote: I don't like when characters break the fourth wall for tutorial purposes.

Basch: "Use the right analog stick to look around."
Reks: "Wtf are you talking about."

:P

It looks like they just added AO to the scene. At least that is the part that stands out the most.

armor on the dead soldiers are very different. Also shadows cast on the ground.

Did they fix the camera controls?

Yes and you can customize X and Y axis too.

I will not miss the ALL CAPS font I'll say that much. Readability is always preferable.

I concur as a non-native speaker. When I played this game back then in 2006 I was still in university.
Even though my English is easily the best among my peers I still struggled to read ALL CAPS text (yeah yeah I know it is not really all caps but it looks like it!).

Did they fix the camera controls?

I saw in one of the videos that there is an option to invert camera controls now, I don't remember that option being there in the original FFXII release which caused some issue.

But, yeah, seems like camera controls are in the options now.

Looks like it even has AA, pretty cool. Or is this rendered higher than 1080p?

It was mentioned in a recent interview that the game renders at higher than 1080p resolutions on a Pro but there hasn't been any pixel counting or exact resolution numbers given by SE to verify.

So they barely remastered the assets...I'm waiting for a price drop for a half assed remaster

Sadly this is what I'm going to do as well. I have a decent enough laptop which can run an emulated version of the IZJS version in HD resolutions just fine but I still want to support this game ... but not at full price.

Do remember that aside from graphical changes, the remaster is adding a few dramatic gameplay changes (two jobs, fast forward, new mode) on top of the gameplay balances being done. So, while it might not seem like a dramatic upgrade compared to IZJS, some heavy work was still done.

Boo. I don't have a Pro. Oh well, its going to look miles better than the PS2 version regardless.

back in my day this would be called FREE texture pack and ENB/reshade. so this is pratically charging for "mods"...

Back in your day you would only have access to this game at 480i. Good luck putting a texture pack and ENB on that resolution and getting something decent out of it.

they could not, but some like the people that did the xenoblade "mods" for dolphin could do, but for free of course ;)

You can do most of that in PCSX2 with the IZJS version of the game. You won't be able to port over any of the game play refinements native to this version of the game though.

Real question is whether or not the game's godlike visual effects will retain their parity. This has been a very noticeable problem in Square's remasters.

Kingdom Hearts II HD is a good example, in many cases the remastered visual effects actually animate worse than they did on PS2.

I sure hope not, because FFXII probably has the best looking visual effects for its generation of all time
