You really are overestimating the number of well written videogames.:lol

Even with the BS shonen stuff it(sadly) will still have a better story than many other games(because most games just use their story as a reason to go to cool places and blow shit up).

Dialogue in games has gotten better this gen but overall story telling is still kinda meh.

Any story>no story. That's one of the reasons JRPGs still have a fanbase outside the anime crowd. We can argue the quality of those stories all day, but the fact of the matter is they will almost always have more depth than the typical action game or first person shooter.

I agree, but Advent Children? Did you watch Advent Children? What makes you think this has any of AC in it?

I think he means in terms of stylish Devil May Cry-like action. Just a cinematic touch, not a gameplay one.

Honestly, I wish they'd have gone even more traditional with the gameplay. I played FFXI for several years, but I don't think anything other than visible enemies should be taken from an MMO to be put into a single player experience. I hated the way XII felt and I'm worried about XIII (even though it seems to be a lot better). If I see a blue dotted line in a gameplay video or something I'm going to cry.

Then again, I guess my perfect Final Fantasy would be FFIX in HD with no random encounters but with a camera that locks in place for battles. I'm sure everyone has their own preferences.

Don't worry, no lines in this game. I didn't like XII either but I really like the demo of this. It's more traditional than XII in almost every way. The inability to control all characters is a bit of a deterrent but I'm hoping the paradigm shift system makes up for that.

You give me so many reasons to use this avatar

I still think the game looks pretty awesome, but the writing & VA is distracting at certain points in the trailers. Or maybe I just didn't like how much of an angst-fest the TGS trailer was :lol But it does seem like the series is becoming more anime-like, which is kind of a turnoff for me.

But overall I'm getting a different vibe from this game than I got from the previous FF games, & I think(hope) that's a good thing.

It's not like the series ever stopped being anime-like. It's just more observable because of better graphics/cinematography. The whole series is very anime-like, even going back to its conception.

Especially with FFIV and the whole "Im going to die an honorable death so the rest of my party can survive, even though we could probably figure out a better way to escape" issue.

Though that is still my favorite FF game...

Really I wish we'd see more original console JRPGs as well. Both action and turn based (with a twist) battle systems.

serah will die saving her fiance just so her body can be used as a summoning sacrifice. PLOT!

i just hope someone dies a quick death with a sword to the back.

Yeah, you're right. & I'm not really against anime, but it's way more noticeable to me in FFXIII than in any of the previous titles. Not so much in the graphics, but just the way the characters talk and what they say, sounds straight out of an anime.

But at the end of the day I'm pretty certain I'll still love the game.

But then Serah can't be the final boss.

That's what happens when you add voice acting and exaggerated animations to the mix. Harder to pick up on the anime when it's just sprites (excluding the portraits of course).

Dammit, I just thought of something and I so want something if I'm right and no I'm not joking.

Serah is going to be Vanille's summon.

Oh wait, you beat me to it... kinda.

No, Serah can't be the final boss. Vanille's mother, leader of the tribe Vanille and Fang come from and creator of the fal'Cie, is the final boss.

i don't think there IS a final boss. idk why i think that.

Even if there is only one boss, there is always a final boss. The only way for there not to be a final boss would be to not include any boss at all.

The last enemy of the game is the final boss... literally.

Well, (I never finished FFXII but looking in the strategy guide it appears they had 4 forms?), so Im figuring that in the FF world the final boss is essentially the finale forme of the last enemy? And Im going to assume that this game will use some cheap mechanic to make it overly difficult (the only other FF I made it to the end or saw was FFIII DS that had that lenghty dungeon that had no save point so when you lose against the final boss you have to beat the four other minor bosses(?))

I click into this thread every now and then and rarely do I have any any idea as to what is actually going on in here. :lol

News discussion -> speculation -> off-topic discussion

I think the battle system and slick visuals are going to win over alot of RPG fans in America to FFXIII but I dont think it's going to top Fallout 3, Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2 in sheer Western fan loyalty. The WRPG is on a drastic upswing and is appealing to a larger group of gamers than the JRPG ever did. FFXIII will still do well in America but I don't think it has quite the cache that it used to.

It saddens me a little bit because I still love JRPG's (playing through Ar Tonelico 2 right now!) and I wish more people bought them. Maybe FFXIII, Resonance of Fate, White Knight Chronicles and Nier (isnt Nier an RPG?) will help the JRPG's image in America. The genre could definitely use a boost in sales and fan loyalty.

Do you mean I won't be able to see Jihl in a scantily-clad costume wearing angel wings while an Ominous Latin Chorus sings in the background?

Ocarina of Time = Final Fantasy VII

You know it in your heart.

So I haven't followed FFXIII very much up to this point. I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy up through FFX, but I never played FFXI because it's a MMORPG, and I absolutely hated FFXII (terrible battle system, growth, story IMHO).

In short, should I get excited for this game and hop aboard the hype train, or should I avert my eyes in fear? I'm hoping for a game more similar to FFX (more jRPG-ish, less western influenced like FFXII). It also seems like FFXIII will have a somewhat sci-fi/cyberpunk setting which excites me a lot.

Base on what I've written, should I be excited for FFXIII? Thanks.

You are me to a T....

This one looks to be great, its good to be excited about a Final Fantasy game again.

Meh

The Japanese site has a countdown for a new trailer in four days.

Alexander has been added and there are two new areas: Sunleth Waterscape and Nautilus.

Awesome.
Reminds me of the scene in FFIX where (I'll spoiler just in case)
the Atmos summon destroys the town and Zidane and Dagger are on that field watching
I loved FFIX so anything that reminds me of it gets me even more excited!

HOT.

Vanille X Fang is the new XIII OTP.

Anyway, the trailer to be revealed in 4 days is supposed to be the FINAL trailer; they totally have to reveal Vanille's summon in it.
