Out of curiosity, have they addressed invisible barriers, z-axis and a seamless world finally with this coming game? Or is DQ8 still going be king for its attempts at that?

Let's hear it.

During the Lightning/Hope scenario. After Lightning and Hope are surrounded by soldiers, she gets him to run while she holds off the soldiers and at that point Fang decides to help her(some of the first images featuring fang show them in battle in the same area the Hope/Lightning scenario just took place), they narrowly escape and go after Hope(who has probably met Snow and started his revenge plot by now).

Asked my friend at Square's localization team about Vanille's summon. The response wasn't exactly what I wanted, but they're not an FF fan so they know jack shit about all the mythos.

The long story short - she does have one but they don't recall a name being mentioned. They know when it arrives on the scene, but not what it's called. They worked in the voice recording bit, so I maybe that summon's name is never said in recorded dialogue, which is perfectly possible, I guess. At least we know she has one now.

You should try to narrow it down by determining its shape first. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Both maybe? :lol

I really don't know why I still lurk GT forums, they constantly remind me why I hate other gamers, yet I can't turn away. It's like the scene of a horrible car accident.

So yeah, apparently since it isn't the best looking game ever and has some bad ground textures FF XIII is a PS2 game now. Yeah.

translation, please :D

Interesting that there seems to be some kind of status display for Crystarium, which I assume is more than just the level cap stuff. Optima makes sense, of course.

So Crystarium this game’s version of the Sphere Grid/License Board? Have we gotten any details on that yet?

Go back a few pages in this thread and there should be some basic descriptions.

Sounds likely. I was thinking it'd be in that area as well. Which again makes me think this may be the fastest party gathering.

We don't know how long it'll take to get to that point. The timeline is very tough to piece together as far as Serah is concerned especially, given that she's been shown conversing with Vanille but in all other respects one would expect that she's out of the picture early on, and that element calls into question other assumptions about the timeline. I'm guessing that the party finally ALL gets together around the same time they reach Pulse.

So I haven't followed FFXIII very much up to this point. I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy up through FFX, but I never played FFXI because it's a MMORPG, and I absolutely hated FFXII (terrible battle system, growth, story IMHO).

In short, should I get excited for this game and hop aboard the hype train, or should I avert my eyes in fear? I'm hoping for a game more similar to FFX (more jRPG-ish, less western influenced like FFXII). It also seems like FFXIII will have a somewhat sci-fi/cyberpunk setting which excites me a lot.

Base on what I've written, should I be excited for FFXIII? Thanks.

Hope and Sazh...

Lightning and Hope..

Guys, just shut up. There won't be any love between the main characters in FFXIII.

A lot of the team that created FFX are working on FFXIII, so yes, be excited.

Wtf are you talking about sandal man!?

That is Oerba Dia Vanille and Hope Estheim.

Hope, the blond one, is the game's mandatory girly boy(at least he's only, like, 15 or something).:lol

So after months of slowly leaking footage/screens/info I think I can safely make a judgement call on this game-

Final Fantasy X in HD with a little bit of of FFXII thrown in to change things up a little and a little bit of Advent Children thrown in to make things look a little more exciting.

It's still final fantasy, you control a group of a half dozen incredibly youthful and attractive people as they journey across a world mixing steam punk with cyberpunk and mythologies from around the world. It looks as good a game with a 5 year development time should (ie- really good, perhaps the nicest rgg ever).

But ... in this day and age of the american developer take over is this enough? I mean right now I'm hyped as hell to play mass effect 2, I want to upgrade my pc to play dragon age but FFXIII .... well I played FFX and finished it by the summer of 2002.

I absolutly LOVED FFXII but stopped playing it completly at around the 20 hour/halfway point. I haven't touched it in almost 2 years and at this point will likely never go back. Why ? I dunno, it's just too damn big I guess.

I suppose the fact that FFXIII is still 4 months away means I won't exactly be making a snap decision but this whole genre... I think it kind of did everything it can do in 2001 and it's been riding an ever descending and run down railcar ever since....

Doesn't help that I'm too broke to spend 70 bucks on games I'm not sure I'll play more then a week anymore.

Took you this long to notice? :lol
A HD version of FFX with the good bits of XII sounds great to me, I for one will be enjoying this game.

So don't play JRPGs. Regardless of what it may seem like, the genre is still growing just like many genres and if you're bored of it, no big deal.

I'm not sure in what way you could possibly characterize this genre as growing. FFXIII may be the last gasp of the giant, bombastic JRPG. Would anyone really be surprised if mainline FF games went portable from here on out?

I don't think S-E's ego would permit it. Besides there's Versus XIII and XIV that are on console so my guess at this point is no.

I mean growing in that developers are still trying to figure out what works. We haven't seen many traditional JRPGs lately because everyone is trying to add their own twist to the gameplay. Most of the time, it just ends up being a niche mechanic that few can get behind, but every so often, someone finds something that works.

I personally like traditional/simple atb the most, but there's still a lot that can be done to improve on the formula.

And there's no way FF will go handheld, at least not this generation or next. They're known for top notch production values and pushing the hardware of whatever consoles they end up on. The second they go handheld, we can safely say console RPGs are dead.

I'm in a similar boat. It's just that I still have extremely fond memories of every Final Fantasy up to XII (though the fondest went down as the years went on). And I can honestly say that my distaste these days is based purely on the story, plots, translation, voice acting or writing. Mass Effect had horrible gun-play. It just wasn't up to snuff with the rest of the Western action games, and yet the innovations with story and dialog are what made that game. Japanese games just aren't giving that to me right now.

Metal Gear and the Team Ico games really are the only ones that attempt something interesting. Metal Gear fails here and there while Ico blows everything else out of the water.

I feel like the stories and tone of the Final Fantasy games worked up until voice over. Now with voice and actual character animations that mimic real life there is a large disconnect. The heartfelt, poorly written anime BS might work in text with cute little characters, but not in this new format.

I know I'll enjoy XIII on a purely nostalgia and gameplay level, but I just question if the story stuff is up to the quality I've grown to expect over the past 5-7 years. Unlike you though I'll probably complete the game, and it will probably be one of my favorite games of the year. That's just a testament to the style of gameplay and the worlds Square creates and how much I can overlook the shit that would make me stop playing any other RPG with similar faults (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey etc.)

You really are overestimating the number of well written videogames.:lol

Even with the BS shonen stuff it(sadly) will still have a better story than many other games(because most games just use their story as a reason to go to cool places and blow shit up).

Dialogue in games has gotten better this gen but overall story telling is still kinda meh.

The issue stems from the fact that you're looking to compare this game to something, don't. While the game does have, as far as we know, a linear structure (plot and narrative wise) so does nearly every FF game. The dungeons themselves seem to lean more towards FFX, I agree, but Advent Children? Did you watch Advent Children? What makes you think this has any of AC in it?

Also, I'm not attempting to attack you, I'm just curious.
