FINAL FANTASY XIII | The Official Import Thread

This is my first attempt at playing a Japanese game. I'll most certainly be using online sources for info. I'm counting on people in this thread to help me out!

I'm definitely not going to understand the majority of what's happening. I read enough Japanese and have played enough of Final Fantasy in Japanese that I should be able to get through the gameplay stuff without much trouble. Honestly though, Final Fantasy tends to be straightforward enough and has enough documentation that they're probably as import friendly as an RPG can get.

I'll be giving it a go.. will need quite a bit of help, but I'm willing to work through what I don't know and try to make it a learning experience.

The battle system looks like it can keep me entertained for several hours with all of its elements.. so I think this game will be a treat to play.

6th year Jgaffer here, with JPLT 1, and a wife I can bug to help explain anything I don't get. ;)

Although, in general if you've played one FF it's usually not to hard to play another. My Japanese skill has sort of progressed through the games, you could say it is one of the reasons I started learning. I went through FF8 not knowing any Japanese when it came out, and finally started teaching myself hiragana and katakana with FF9, and finally started studying Japanese in college around FFX, and played FFX-II while I was studying abroad in Japan. I used the JP client for FFXI for the 2 years I played, and have only played FFXII in Japanese. I kind of want to play it in English since I hear the dub is good, but I would miss the awesome voice that is Norio Wakamoto (AKA the awesome pimpish Al-Cid).

Anyways, things have definitely moved much faster then since around FF8 or 9 when there wasn't much people out translating, and there were much longer periods of time between localization. I'm still amazed that there is only a 3 month turn around for the English version. But yeah, I'm pretty sure there will be the gung ho guy who will translate every bit of conversation out there.

when did you order? I just ordered today. i hope they have enough to fulfill preorders ;(.

It said "preparing order" for my copy too, but they estimated the shipping date to be the 28th. :-(

This guy are professional Japanese game translator.

(And it's maddening playing a game I didn't get to work on, because I constantly localize every goddamn line in my head.)

Welp, just took the plunge and ordered the Japanese version. This will be my third import after Rhythm Tengoku and Rhythm Tengoku Gold. This will certainly be more of a challenge but I took a few Japanese classes in college and I'm counting on online guides to get me through the rest. I'm excited!

My kanji is trash, but I learned enough Japanese while living in the country to make getting through RPGs relatively smooth. :) (my hiragana and katakana reading is pretty fast)

Thank god for me, I ordered mine ages ago. It's estimated for Dec. 17th.

I ordered mine a little while back when it was still 84$ and right now I have Preparing Order as status with shipping date on or before december 17th. Hopefully, it is before!

The release of a numbered FF is upon us! I don't know about you guys, but I get all giddy inside. Unfortunately I'll have to wait for the domestic release. :(

Great job Kagari!

Dammit P-A sucks balls sometimes and if it weren't for the lower prices, I'd prefer to get it off himeyashop or something. Serves me right for being cheap.

They are offering both Japanese and Asian versions, I wonder if the people with later estimated ship dates come from that. I ordered the Japanese version on the 12th and it says mine will ship on or before the 17th.

Found this. Thanks to dreamsummer of A9VG.

I ordered the Japanese release, I'm really tempted to cancel it now just to get it somewhere else.

Did you make the order on the 12th of this month? Just wanted to clarify, as I'm really tempted to complain to them. I made the order last month and having the game delayed till after new years is fucked.

That's considered a spoiler isn't it? D:

Hmm...I'm not sure. It just says that you get the platinum trophy once you get all tropies. Isn't that typical of all platunum trophies?

It doesn't say anything else about story nor gameplay.

Did anyone else order from Renchi.com? I've got a Fedex tracking number that seems to indicated mine will be sent out on the 16th.

I did. No update in sight though. Did you just recently get your tracking no.?

Looking back through the history of the series, I'm very interested to see how this one is received overall and how it ends up being remembered in the long term.

Wrote some observations and musings down here:
The Pressure is on Final Fantasy XIII.
(Had to use Kobun Heat's excellent "Meanwhile..." comic in there too)

But yeah, first main-series FF to blaze a trail onto a new console since FFX, like 8 years ago, and the first pf such generational jumpers to do so under the Square Enix moniker instead of Squaresoft. I've ordered trucks of popcorn.

I'd love to learn japanese, but I wouldn't know where to start. Online? A book of some kind?
The official long-ass thread of learning Japanese (or whatever it's called) in the OT is probably a good place to start for tips from fellow GAFers.

Lived here ten years and I'm around level 1 on the official test scale. Should be able to play through it without any problems though like always I'm not going to bother looking up most stuff related to equipment stats and the like as I'm too lazy ;)

I've got it reserved at my local game shop and will be picking it up at midnight Thursday. I probably won't put it in until the following night due to work, though. I haven't read much about the game, but honestly the story and characters don't really interest me at all from what I have seen. With that said, I have yet to be disappointed by a main title in Final Fantasy series so I fully expect the game to grow on me. Luckily I am totally free on Saturday and Sunday so I will be sinking some heavy hours into the game.

I'm completely fluent and pretty much at a native level, but I started playing RPGs in Japanese even when I was still only at an intermediate or lower level. Keep a dictionary on hand and you can actually learn quite a bit of the language through playing RPGs.

Trophy list needs to get posted.
but wouldn't that go in the spoiler thread? unless it's left in japanese? i would love to see a translated list unless it's heavy spoiler.

oh and playasia needs to charge my card. grr.

I just saw this thread. Nice OP Kagari.

But I don't think I'll be coming back to this thread. I want to know as little as possible when I play it in March.

please god. let the 2 charges i see on my bank be playasia charging my card {okay they are "charging" the soundtrack too which can be put on hold anyways}

Head's up, in 20 mins or so FFXIII will be featured on another program on FujiTV. After that program on the same channel it'll be further featured in a special episode of Game Center CX.

What we REALLY need is to know if there's new game+ or not!

Boy I would love that. As much as I've loved every FF game, the two things I've always wished that they would add are a New Game + and difficulty settings.

So yesterday my CC gets declined causing my Play-Asia order to stumble = fixed
Today the checkmark next to Tales of Graces that I had it shipping together with disappears and Graces is in "ships in a week" status, which would drag my FFXIII with it. I swear Japan is doing everything possible to conspire that I don't get FF this week :(

Nice one!
I went to pay for the import and my mum said 'i'll do it, it can be a stocking filler'
:D
Haha! Moms are great! :D
I'm not even importing so mine will be some strange March present just for kicks :lol

I wonder how well it will go keeping away from spoilers.. I knew a lot about XII but that was still a great experience for me..

Still, I think I'll be real serious and try.. I'll have something to look forward to, a reward for keeping up with schoolwork and my.. other.. life goals!

PS. demos are for sissies. This is FF sahrteen mang, you just buy it.

Since stuff is starting to leak and more stuff will likely leak before the 17th, I'll post a spoilers only thread once that happens.

Isn't there already one? I could've sworn I saw one made by 7th, didn't click though.
