Beat Akita ;) that's where I was.
1 gaijin in a town of 10,000.
1 conbini for the whole town.
1 train every 3 hours during the day time.

Money was great, but I was going stir crazy after my first year.

Hah, I got you beat, kind of.

Village of 3000 (part of a larger town because of reformation a few years ago though)
2 Convenience stores,
No trains at all.
2-3 meters of snow

Which makes me glad my job here is stable. Good pay, cheap rent, etc. Hurray for the Japanese government.

Yeah unfortunately next year my 3 years on JET will be up, so I am going to be scrounging for a job here. Gonna be worse if I managed to fail 1kyuu too...

I hope I didn't fail 1kyuu either oof.

I can renew up to 5 years in my position and they definitely want me to stay since they get a free interpreter for the price of an ALT.

Jumping ship? A lot of people in the salaryman line I know have been doing the same here... economy is as bad as or worse than the US... :(

Yeah. The pay is good, but the hours are ludicrous and I just get really sick of the corporate politics and red tape. I've been wanting to get back to Seattle (where I'm originally from) for a while and my wife (who is Japanese) wants to go to school in the States which I fully support since I want her to become at least proficient in English. I like Japan a lot, though, and I will probably be coming back in a couple of years. I'll just have to make sure I find a smaller and more progressive company to work at next time or go freelance.

You're in on the elem program then if you can do 5 years right? They started that after my time.

I feel like I just moved on from teaching little kids to teaching bigger kids (HR work), people are just as ignorant, and as stupid at times, but not as cute and fun. :(

Oh, 1-kyuu is a joke now a days. I have it, but it gets you pretty much nothing in terms of salary, and most companies don't look at it at all. They'll figure out how much you can speak at an interview which is based on how well you write your japanese resume. In which you will still be asked "did you write this yourself?" 笑

Understand that, wish my wife would be a little more pro-active with the English, but I'm from the Midwest, so jobs aren't exactly overflowing. If we have kids though, I will go back to at least put them through elem or jr high in the states.

And red tape sucks, and so do the hours. 9 to 6 is more like 9 - 10 on some days with an hour commute each way.... The plus side is i'm 40(!) hours into P3P thanks to that commute, and I haven't played it all at home!

I used to have a commute which was great for catching on up portable gaming and reading, but I moved and now live two stations away from work. I haven't touched my PSP or DS in a long time as a result.

And yeah, 9 - 10 or 11 is pretty standard at my job with frequent Saturdays. It doesn't help that most of my coworkers are workaholics who are either single, divorced, or hate their wives and get all excited when they miss the last train and have to use company funds to stay at a local hotel.

Well, let's drown our sorrows with FFXIII. I've taken the 24th and 25th off so I have 5 days of pure unadulterated sit in your underwear (in the kotatsu) and don't move gaming planned. Until the wife comes home from work that is. hah

Why aren't you guys trying to get into private schools or university jobs. The conditions are pretty damned good for the education industry and even for any industry from my experience.

I'm a JHS teacher actually. Do have elem classes on Friday though. Really though, I spend more time playing den mother to the rest of the ALTs by translating and interpreting for our employers than actually teaching. That'll look good on a resume but still need the 1kyuu anyway because Japan is silly like that.

The education industry does look appealing, but I have zero teaching experience and honestly don't think I would be very good as a teacher of a class. I'd probably have to start out in Eikaiwa first and that isn't very appealing at all.

I don't even know if I will get one tomorrow. I have been bed-ridden for the last week and never got to reserve it. Finally tried at a Lawson but the Loppi machine said it had finished. I guess I can just go to Yodobashi umeda after work and hope they have enough stock. They usually do...

I am staying in the MYSTAY in Akihabara right now and there is a Family Mart downstairs and it seems they are going to have enough since they still have the reserve slips out...
and it's 7pm here in Akihabara right now...

i leave tomorrow....but my flight is at 3pm and I have been debating ALL NIGHT on whether to get it or not...
seeing the crowds here hyped....and the cameras out infront of Sofmap and across from Club Sega...lol

I already picked up the posters and Playstation anniversary edition FF XIII...might as well
the game right...lol

on a side note....does anyone know if the shops here (Sofmap/Gamers/etc...) are doing midnight releases...and if so, is it for reserved copies only?

I don't think there are any midnight launches in Akihabara, but I may be mistaken. I've never camped out there before. I live about 30 minutes (300 Yen or so on the Tokyo Metro) from Akihabara and have the game pre-ordered at a local store that is open until 1am or 2am everyday and they will be selling the game starting at midnight. I have no idea if there will be a line or how many copies they will have for non-preorders, but that might be an option for you. Most big stores like Sofmap and Yodobashi will have a ton of copies even for non-preorders so as long as you are in line they should probably have enough for you.

its been nice reading this thread from the beginning, now that the game is almost out in Japan.. i have no choice but to go blackout for the next 3 months :( have fun with the game u early importer!! am jealous

Anyone know how exactly the Lawson's deal with selling games? I am guessing they only order enough copies for people who preordered? Or do they have a small stock too? Also is there a set time they will start selling?

I don't think I have ever seen anything other than some old PS2 games actually on stock at a Lawson or any other convenience store. That might change with FFXIII and I definitely think it would be worth taking a look at a few convenience stores just to be sure.

Well they often do pre-orders for big games around here at least. DQIX, FFXIII, Monster Hunter, and a couple more if I remember right.

I just don't know if they get in an even limited stock.

Yeah, but English is a dead end career here in Japan, a majority of JETs end up spending 3 years here, and it means nothing to most employers unless English/Teaching was the persons original major or area of interest. Sounds cynical, but the best way to get something out of JET itself is to pimp everything else BUT the English teaching. If you get with Eikaiwa then you really don't have anything to get from that except time to screw around in Japan. Sounds cynical, but I did a year of Jet, and a year of eikaiwa, and consider myself lucky to have managed to get out of that field and into my major of business and management.

Good to hear that they've expanded the five year limit to beyond elem teachers then. The other stuff will look good on your resume indeed though. And, seriously, you don't need 1kyuu if you've got language skills. I have yet to see a company ask for when I was interviewing with major Japanese companies. The only place maybe is if you were going for a translation/interpreter job, and the people I know who do that, don't have the certification. Doesn't help that the test is held once a year. Twice from next year though I hear.

Back on topic, looks like Sagawa is taking their damn time, estimated time of delivery is 12/18, wtf.

Good god. I can't believe Japan is getting this already! How hard was it for them to add english subtitles/menu to the game (If I'm correct, it has no english subtitles. Please tell me I'm wrong!!).

The anticipation is killing me! I hope it arrives next week on Monday or Tuesday, or this week on Friday but that seems unlikely :(

It has some english in the menues, but only stuff like "Accessory, item, member, job class abbreviations, and other random menu things. The important things are still japanese though, and subtitles are Japanese. Not worth importing if you can'nt understand the language imo.

My copy has shipped, I'll get it tomorrow (assuming it's the same speed as my hard drives)! >=D

Yeah, they just expanded it the last few years to be 5 years, it's pretty neat for folks that want to stay. They're really hard up for ALTs although with the economy so bad, a lot recontracted last year and a lot applied for the job, hah.

Yeah unfortunately Osaka-shi stuck with the 3 year rule for some odd reason. They would have allowed me to transfer but I don't want to live in the countryside again.

In most cases I agree but I work 8:30-4:30, five days a week with 10 weeks of holidays a year + public holidays. Add to that they cover my insurance, pay a bonus (though it's only half a month of salary) and the salary is equivalent to management at an eikaiwa....

I'm very happy doing what I'm doing, let's put it that way :)

I'll get back on topic properly tomorrow when I post my initial impressions, I promise.

Well I got my copy!

I went down to my local shop at 12:30am to avoid the initial line, but I still had to wait a good 10 minutes to pick up my pre-order.

I'm going to start it up and play for an hour or so now. Work is going to suck tomorrow morning.

Is Tsuchida still listed as Battle Director in the opening credits?

google translator to the rescue?

So to those who got the game already: How is it holding up?

I wasn't hyped for it, and after watching the justintv feed it kinda soured my taste for the game. So to those who got it, is it any good?

still no PA tracking number... not that big a deal though, I'm sure it will get here soon.

though now it does say 'estimated to ship on or before dec. 17th' I guess thats an update right?
