FINAL FANTASY XIII | The Official Import Thread

Those of us that are playing it seem to be enjoying it overall. The people that haven't played it are doing most of the bitching =P

My last hope with the FF series now lies with FFXIV.

I haven't played it, and I haven't been dissuaded by the impressions here. My import copy finally arrives today, so I'll hopefully be joining the happy people!

I mean, if people who haven't played it want to hate on it, have at you! It doesn't sound nearly as fun as actually playing the game.

Same here. The positive impressions have swayed me far more than the negative ones. I can't wait to jump into the battle system. Twice now I've almost caved and imported, but I think I'll be able to hold out.

Not seeing it that way.
There's no hate really, but seems those that are playing it are noticing major changes in the series.

I'm betting once you guys finish the game, the major impressions will all be the same:
"Great one time experience, but far from my favorite FF."

But hating on things on the internet is a game in and of itself!

I'm kind of hoping that Versus will be like Kingdom Hearts meets GTA: San Andreas, personally. They've talked about a streaming world map, day/night cycle, and complex idling behavior from NPCs, all of which sound a whole lot like an open-worlder to me. This is the import thread though, so I don't want to take this too far off topic.

I don't know what gives you that idea honestly. Dragon Quest games have world maps, day/night cycles, and NPC routines change between day and night. Radiata Stories also did the same thing with day/night cycles and routines. It's nothing new and it does not in any way indicate an "open world" or anything. In fact, Nomura has stated that Versus XIII will be more traditional than FFXIII, in the sense that there will be towns and cities to visit, but you will also progress from the world map to fields and dungeons to complete quests like slaying summons to contract them, etc. It'll be a linear story with exploration, but nothing he has said indicates anything like GTA. It's weird that you would get that idea.

I'm almost 9 hours in on Chapter 5. Just started
Right after Chapter 4 where Sazh and Vanille turned on the control panel and went to Lightning and Hope Scene leading to Chapter 5
Up until this Part I quite enjoyed the game for what it is. I'm such a whore for graphics and I've been enjoying the cutscenes and the flashy visuals during the battle especially during Chapter 4. So pretty <3

As far as story goes. No clue. I can pick out words that I know like Fal'cie, Pulse, l'cie, and stuff like that. everything is pretty much going to have to wait for the NA release. I've been managing in the game. Crystarium right now is just lvling up the Optima I'm using for each character since most of the time i don't pay attention what is actually being increased or obtained :lol.

I'm at work right now. I'll play some more when I get home. Oh and about death... I think I died 5 times so far.

Is it just me? The music sounds very reminiscent of Kanno Yoko's work with GITS:SAC...hell, if someone told me the composer was Kanno Yoko, I would have believed it :P

I can see that.. I wouldn't have a hard time believing it either.

It has as much in common with Kanno's OST as it does with Go Shiina's work on ToL's OST. The actual composition style in all these works are completely different, what you're hearing is probably just the similarities in terms of the musical style being that of a sweeping film score with many interesting musical choices of using vocals as part of the BGM in a melodic ways.

Although, if I had to pin it down, I would say the Escaflowne movie is a better comparison than the SAC soundtracks.

I don't know, it's pure speculation, but interviews have said that the world map and the NPC idle behavior would be unusual/surprising somehow.

Chapter 10 boss advice?

The fight with Cid is like UGH once he transforms and goes into his second form and can start juggling you to near death. :lol I've gotten him down to 20% health before he targets Lightning and juggles her to death before Vanille's Cures can reach me in the air.:lol

I'm running with a team of Lightning/Sazh/Vanille, my Optima is:

Attacker/Blaster/Blaster
Blaster/Healer/Blaster
Healer/Healer/Enhancer

I'm wondering whether or not to swap Sazh out right now because even though his enhancements are hella useful they don't seem to be doing a whole lot of good in this fight. I might just put in Fang or Snow and have them as a Defender when I need to heal up

Lightning/Fang/Vanilla

Start: Blaster/Attacker/Blaster
-Stabilize and build up break gauge for ~2 rounds
Optima change 1: Attacker/Defender/Healer
-Heal up Fang/party
Optima change 2: Blaster/Defender/Blaster
-Build up break gauge
-Repeat 1&2 as necessary

Optima change 3: Healer/Defender/Healer
-Immediately after his Seraphic something where your party takes heavy damage. Use potions in between ATB charging to maximize efficiency

Optima change 4: Blaster/Attacker/Blaster
-Switch to this during guard phase after party's healed

Alternatively, Optima change 5: Blaster/Attacker/Jammer
-If you're about to break during guard, switch to this, hold off on Lightning's attacks, and let Fang keep the break gauge filled and debuff with Vanilla.
-The moment Cid comes out of guard, IMMEDIATELY attack with Lightning, break, switch to Blaster/Attacker/Blaster and keep Cid juggled.

If you can't keep Cid juggled, expect him to go into another guard phase, and well then you're fucked. During juggling, don't spam ATB combos as soon as they're ready...usually the tail end of your party's combos is a good time to start. If you need to force a delay in juggling, do something like magic -> magic blow -> magic ->magic blow....it buys you a split second of extra time in case your party is still waiting for ATB to charge.

Fang can take a tremendous amount of damage w/o needing heals. If absolutely necessary, you can keep Blaster/Defender/Blaster and Attacker/Defender/Blaster active for a long time and use a Phoenix down to raise Fang when she dies instead of swapping to a healer containing Optima.

Well now that FFXIII is out, I guess we finally understand. We will be surprised that Versus actually has those things at all! AMIRITE?! :lol

I'll try to sum it up to where you're at.

Lightning and Snow are both trying to save Sera from the fal'Cie. Sera is Lightning's sister and Snow's fiancee. Hope, Vanilla, and Sazh basically just get caught up in the mix. Vanilla empathizes with Hope since he lost his mother and blames Snow for her death, which is why he followed him. I forget why Sazh tagged along, but no biggie. Anyway, they all find Sera who completed her mission as an l'Cie and became a crystal. She tells them to save Cocoon and then they all go up and kick the fal'Cie's ass. After they beat it, it turns them all into l'Cie and gives them a mission... to destroy Cocoon. The government is involved as well
, so all this lends to the madness happening you've been missing!

Thanks for the summary. I kinda understood most of the story even with the language barrier. Even if I made up my own story during some cutscenes :lol.

Awesome. :lol

The story pretty much falls along the line of the usual epic RPG, so it's rather easy to make the right conclusions minus the details.

Thanks to the people in this thread I am back to being on the hype train for the game (after my initial shock at the impressions) but I have to ask a few things

For one why are people expecting a traditional Final Fantasy from Versus? Nomura doesn't seem to do that, he seems much more keen on action elements in his games.

For two considering how much people are talking about wanting the town structure and etc. why didn't Lost Odyssey sell bucketloads? (From what I've seen it seems more in line with traditional FF)

Because Nomura already said as much in his interviews. He's one of the most outspoken and honest developers at S-E, and he's pretty open about sharing what he's working on, etc. By traditional we don't mean it won't be an action RPG, because it will be. It's just more traditional because he already mentioned specifically (and there are concept sketches shown) that the game will have a world map like older FF games, and that they're still working out what is the perfect proportion to represent the environment and the player's character with. There will also be an airship, and there are towns and cities, and lots of exploration.

Because the people who are the most vocal on the internet also often represent the smallest minority of actual sales.

I just like options. IE in FF8, everyone talks about how you have to use summons for every single battle. But you could also just abuse the hell out of the junction system. Anywhere to avoid any further derailing. It's just a comparison that I thought that fits. Don't get me wrong about it and all. I'm absolutely enjoying FF13. Juggling that and Graces now.

Let me tell you right now, this battle system, even with no extra mechanics introduced to it (still early on), wipes the floor with FF8's battle system. In fact, as far as I can tell, it'll wipe the floor with every one up until FFX. I'll comment more on it when I understand later mechanics.

So far though, it seems like the proper evolution from FFX-2 and FFXII.

I suppose you're right on that second point. If I had a 360 (semi-positive getting one for Christmas instead of a new PS3 now that mine is gone, but in Feb. I am getting one) I'd probably pick it up for my old school FF fix but 13 is definitely there.

As for the Nomura quotes, I do like that about him. I remember when Kingdom Hearts was announced I was meh on the idea, didn't even pick up the game at first but when I did try it I fell in love with his style. Even though he uses young characters he definitely pushed the maturity in the situation (very all-ages, kids can love the Disney but its not embarrassingly childish so an adult can enjoy it, much like old Disney used to be) so Versus 13 has me hyped to see what he pulls off with adult characters.

As for the world map and etc. I hadn't seen that comment from him, although it would be amazing to see it pulled off I just wasn't sure how that style of game (world map, airships) would work in an ARPG which is the style he seems to really enjoy doing

Speaking of music. Is there any themes for the characters? Anything memorable or catchy that later down the road there would be a OC Remix of it? I haven't heard too much impressions on the music besides the catchy fight music.

My favorite thing about Nomura as a director is that Kingdom Hearts 2 FM reeeeally shows that he's willing to respond to feedback and can learn from his mistakes. He's got a bombastic style, sure, but he's unassuming enough to add refightable superbosses, dodge roll, and platformable levels that rewarded backtracking, when those were the missing elements that EVERYONE missed from KH1. I can definitely appreciate that the man is willing to learn from his mistakes, which is a big part of why I'm extremely excited for Birth By Sleep and FF Versus XIII despite having been somewhat underwhelmed by KH2.

The OST tracklisting mentions themes for all six playable characters as well as a theme for the main recurring villain.

Okay, I'm getting really annoyed with how people like taking things which are out of context, and adding their worthless opinions on the subject either because they think it's cool, or they're just ignorant. So just once, I will indulge in a spoiler regarding the "Chocobo theme" linked.

Chapter 8 spoilers regarding location setting and BGM:
The electronic Chocobo theme is used in Nautilus Park, in the section with Chocobos and Sheep. It's an open air petting zoo located inside a high tech theme park, where the merchandising of choice are various variations of Carbuncle plushies. It sounds like a synthesized mascot jiggle because it is supposed to be one. End of story.

KH2 was a step in the wrong direction, I won't deny that, in terms of gameplay. I wish its FM came to North America (even though #1 I didn't care) but it definitely carried the story well. I actually cared about Roxas (it might have helped that while I bought #2 on Day 1 I didn't play it until after I got 358/2 Days) in just his short part of the story.

Still, he has tried different innovations (the panel system in 358/2, the card system in CoM) and really pushes the storytelling and that is all in just one series.

Its because of these things that when I found out he was making Versus 13 my hype for 13 went down and all of it went to V13 :lol

To be fair, I actually think it's pretty cute. I just wonder what they're going to do about the Japanese lyrics in the English version.

For you importer cats who are flying blind, finalfantasy-xiii.net has created a Crystarium Guide with visuals. Not all of it is completed (nothing for Defender) and there are some typos, but it should help you a bit in understanding what you're spending your CP on.

http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10027

BTW, does leveling your role do anything besides increasing your level? It always seems like a waste of CP aside from advancing the board since I see no real goodies from doing so.

It's cheaper, CP-wise, to level say...Lightning's attacker/healer/blaster role than the other 3 by a significant amount. I think it's like 6000cp per node at lvl 1 for her enhancer role...also, isn't the +ATB gauge node on the main role of the character?

When it comes to Role Enhancement, I can understand the increase in cp requirement.

I think I worded my question wrong, though. I was just wondering about the actual "level up" node in the Crystarium.

So, listening to some of the songs (the small handful that are available; will need to wait for the OST to make a valid judgement)... It definitely suffers from FFX Syndrome in that a lot of the songs are remixes of other songs within the game...

I must admit I have WAY too much fun taking out shriveled penis monsters.

That battle took 6 minutes but I GOT SO MANY CP I am going to spend them on SO MANY THINGS
