Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

maybe not new classes but new weapons or equipments that would unlock certain abilities. and i would prefer class advancement or even combination of classes to produce new classes.

anyway i hope they preserve the party base gameplay like in FFXI but also allow solo opportunities.

man talking about this makes me wanna go back to FFXI

Yeah, I'm just presuming that instead of, say, getting Paladin, Samurai, and Puppeteer we'll get a set of knight swords for Gladiators, tachi for Lancers or Marauders, and activators for Pugilists.

I wonder if they're going to throw in AF sets whose skills match old jobs particularly closely. :lol

I don't think you guys should have high hopes for such classes being added before launch, seems like 5 "Fighter" classes and (I assume) 5 "Mage" classes would be a pretty reasonable amount of classes to work with until the first expansion.
Ehh, 50% mage classes seems high to me and you're not including hybrid classes. When FFXI launched in NA there were 5 pure Mage classes, 6 pure melee classes and 4 hybrid classes, which all tended heavily toward physical attacks in that game.

Another thing to consider is that in FFXIV the tradeskill type classes will also be a part of the party dynamic it seems, so I'm guessing around 15 playable classes will be available at the games' launch, but I wouldn't be surprised by more.

And do you really expect me to believe they're not going to have a knife wielding class in a fantasy mmo? :lol

Most of the function could be handled by, say, patching in for Lancers a variety of katanas and domarus, or a special branch of maces and broadswords for Gladiators.
First of all, this is basically exactly how FFXI functioned, all the jobs had access to various different weapons of different skill ranks which made using weapon types other than your top ranked weapon extremely situational. That's fine but this is a new game and I like the system of one weapon = one set of skills.

Second of all, the idea of a class called "Lancers" using katanas seems extremely silly to me :P Heck, I think I remember reading that "Archers" wouldn't even use crossbows this time around!

Lancer skills

気合 自身に活を入れる HPを削り、TPを増加させる - exchange HP for more TP

Aw man. I'm a 75DRG in FFXI. I thought I would try something different this time around but looking at these abilities... I just may have to pick up the lance again.

Well I think it's pretty plausible that they would do a 50% split, I mean we already have two mage classes announced, one of them speculated as being an Illusionist (CC class perhaps?) and the other being a Druid/Blood Mage/Dark Wizard. So that would leave three spots open (of course assuming that aforementioned speculations are somewhat true) for an elemental mage, a healer and maybe a summoner/bard/something.

When FFXI launched in NA there were 5 pure Mage classes, 6 pure melee classes and 4 hybrid classes, which all tended heavily toward physical attacks in that game
Sure, but did that really turn out that well? I cannot say that I'm a FFXI vet by any means but judging of what I've read it did seem like several classes were severly broken for a long time after launch. Also Square-Enix seem to be trying to streamline the class design in FFXIV quite a bit by bascially pairing together FFXI classes into more fleshed out classes instead of creating another set of niche classes that likely will present the same challange as last time they tried it (assuming my previous assumption regarding balance in FFXI is somewhat correct).

And regarding hybrids, I wouldn't be all that surprised if they would try and stray away from such classes as they've always have been quite a bitch to balance properly : | I'd say the closest thing to hybrid classes we'll see in FFXIV will be the Pugilist and the Druid/Dark Wizard depending on if the latter can heal or not.

And do you really expect me to believe they're not going to have a knife wielding class in a fantasy mmo?
Yeah, that does seem unlikely but I just can't think of a class besides maybe a Bard that would make use of it unless they decide to give the Pugilist the option to use knives since they do seem to have all the abilites the knife based classes usually have. Ninjas perhaps? But once again I wouldn't be surprised if Pugilist are made to be the evasion based tank.

Holy crap at the Conjurer class! Elemental magic + Healing? Very interresting. I think Warhammer Online did something similar with their Archmage/Shaman classes but this is taking it a step further as this class might actually be the main magic nuke class of the game as well as being the healer. The question now is, will there be another healing class, and if so, will it be a "pure" healer or another hybrid like this one?

EDIT:

By the way, do we have any information if certain schools of magic are tied to specific class of weapons? Say for example that when the Conjurer uses a staff he can use Fire, Ice, Wind and Water magic and when using a Scepter/Wand he instead gains the ability to use healing magic such as Cure at the expense of no longer being able to use the elemental magic.

Job balance is tricky no doubt, but you also have to consider that the more options you give someone, the more likely they are to glom onto something they like. They could quite conceivably make a game with only 4 classes but people would get bored with it. That said, I do think you're right there was definitely a bit of redundancy in FFXI but it was still fun to try out new combinations and everything added to the lore and flavor of the world.

This seems like a good point, especially since people will be able to change jobs on the fly now, although I'm still hoping for a way to specialize your character beyond what a given class provides. The job/subjob system spoiled me, I know.

Bards use instruments! Pugilist has steal and a move called blindside that increases damage when you attack from behind an enemy. That sounds slightly different from a backstab critical strike move, so there's still a possibility of an assassin/rogue type class which a Ninja could fill admirably.

From the what I've heard of the armory system I figured that the weapon type equipped had a corresponding skill set, but though I can imagine different weapons sharing certain skills while having different skillsets otherwise. Like a knife user getting say steal and stride in addition to a theoretical hamstring type ability.

Does anyone need a code for the PS3 beta and in-game item? I have no plans to play the final XIV game and would rather play the beta on PC. Just quote this post and first one gets it.

huh? there's a PS3 beta?

if so let me have it

Since MP doesn't recover automatically (I assume there is no resting either), seems like having a BRD or RDM-like class in party is going to be all that more important.

Jp site update with new Battle Music! :D Pure Uematsu style.

http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/
Not bad, but it doesn't really rank up there among the better battle themes. I can't really put my finger on it. I like the guitar as it's kinda Black Mages-y, but the other melodies are a bit generic sounding.

I really liked the previous music that was on the site, however.

CORRECTION: Not a party battle, just displaying the different ranges of the jobs. Its the same guy demonstrating various jobs.

Not too far off from FFXI, but seems like there is a wider range for...ranged attacks.

If you ask me, the spear guy should be concentrating on flipping it over to expose it's weak point.

Did anyone get a confirmation mail that you entered the Beta draw?
Or do you get a mail when you are selected for the beta?

You will have confirmation, if you are selected for beta.

Nevermind, had to refresh. I wonder what those extra chances were for if no one who has entered received anything? Unless they get emails later today or something, because you'd at least see a few "I got in!" posts at various sites.

You could look just a page back and get the answer. But no, you are not understanding right. You send in your code to get a new code, then you sign up for the beta using that code and then at some point in the future you may randomly be chosen to participate in some portion of the PS3 beta test. Which won't occur until after the PC beta test, which is after the PC Alpha Test, which hasn't started yet.

Ack!, my bad I missed it when as I got excited. Thank you for answering though.

I'm rather disappointed in my FFXIII code, the code it gives for the FFXIV beta only gets you in the draw for the PS3 beta. It has no use for the Windows beta (which starts first!) and either way it's still a draw, nothing is guaranteed.

I think this is Squenix's way of reminding us how much we are their bitches. Oh well, I still have FFXIII I guess. :lol

So the PC beta has started, any idea on how far behind the PS3 beta will be?

Ta

Count at last 1-2 months.

So with the PS3 Promo Code when you sign up using the code does it guarentee you a spot in the beta or is it just a better chance?

I signed up and if I get in great, if not that's fine to but just curious.

I figure that the PC beta took applications in December and is starting now so thats ~3months. The PS3 beta is taking applications now so Id expect that one to open maybe May or June. Its stupid logic to go by but its all I got :D

Im thinking about going with Lancer. Pugilist is out since I was PUP in FFXI and want to stray away from another h2h job. Ill know for sure if I get into the beta. Reading about the jobs only gets us so much.

Better chance i think, but no a spot

ok so with the possibility of the beta not starting until the 1st of April, is there a chance they are doing Alpha testing between now and then?

didnt I read that Alpha testers needed high end PCs since there wouldnt be any config options and the game would be running on the highest settings?

So all I need to do is register the code with square-enix and i am put in a drawing for the beta?

Yo need to register code, wait for FFXIV promo code, and then re-do the FFXIV beta aplication.

The FFXIV code is instant when you register. It is not emailed to you. You goto the website and register the code, hit submit, and youll be taken to a screen that says "Game registered, yadda yadda, you are now a bronze member." Scroll down on that same page and itll go into the FFXIV code details and list your code. Print that page to get a copy of your code so you dont lose it.
