Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Will there be a GAF guild Day 1? This game is interesting and seems a bit more indepth than WoW in regards to crafting, which is what I was after. Strangely, I notice everyone seems to be crafting and level up via that - is that the best way?

Yes, there will be. Start visiting the thread in the online thread. SoD will continue on from FFXI into FFXIV.

I know some of you wanted to change servers. I have that list of gaffers that will be playing on day 1. If you guys want to decide on a server or start voting, Ill update that list with what everyones votes are and you can get a server selected. Unless you would rather wait until you can see where the people you like/dislike are going so you can decide from there. If you know where you want to go, just post it and Ill try to keep that list updated.

Personally, Im sticking with Lindblum. Its too late in the game now to get all of my friends/family alerted to another different server.

:lol

Still two weeks away or three depending on which version you get. Hardly too late in the game.

Have we devised away on who will be starting and the best way to get pearls to the 3 starting cities?

Okay so I need advice. I'm pretty sure the Ul'dah beginning storyline quest chain gave me no xp. All the xp I have gotten so far comes from the battlecraft leves at the first camp + grinding around that camp.

Is there anything else I can do to get xp? Should I visit the other cities and do the leves there too?

Main quest does not give XP unless you defeat mobs in said quest. XP is given for damn near everything else. Completing synths for every single craft, successfully gathering, or killing mobs. More XP when you do these as leves. If you're crafting, do localleves. These are crafting quests which have a separate timer than Guildleves.

Also, XP in this game, refers to ones Physical Level.

Oops, I should say skill points then, because my focus is on ranking up the jobs.

You have never met my friends/family :lol

Its not so much MY friends since theyre mostly cool and easy with whatever. Its my sisters. Theres a chain of people that need she needs to contact and some of them are overseas and in the military so its not a simple text message or email away. Sometimes its weeks before she hears from any of them which is why she needs to start telling everyone well in advance.

Has a server been decided on yet? The sooner I know the sooner I can tell my friends so that we dont make characters in the wrong server.

Again, you guys are on the wrong thread. If you want in the GAF LS, you need to make your voices known in the online thread. Not here.

@Awntawn

Geops in our Linkshell was mining in the caves (Quarrying) and he was getting all of the different coloured bugs from that, I think he said they appear on grade 3 or higher quarrying spots.

4 of us teamed with 3 mages today in Nanawa Mines, I did some videos was quite fun and reminded me of a very fast paced FF11 party.

I'll up load the video when I find a good way to compress them :S

Come on now Kin you know that would make too much sense to go to the Online forum to discuss an online game...

I don't see what the deal is. Both are ff14 threads, both are for gaffers. If only one is needed then why do we even have two?

I think its best to discuss it in both so nobody gets left out. Some of the online forum guys never make it over here and vice versa.

You can add me to the list of Day 1 Gaffers. :D I tried to resist but the game is fucking compelling even with its flaws. Name will be Soroc Dahydro

QUick question: Does archers have to put points in strenght too? I'm putting all on dex and some in vit, so far.
I'm an ARC and I put points into strength. I'm pretty sure it's helped the power of my attacks. STR corresponds to melee weapon attack strength so I don't see why it would be excluded.

Windows Live Movie Maker will do it in virtually one click. Do it!

This game is very compelling but they really need to remove the fatigue system. My girlfriend doesn't want to play melee classes but with only 2 casters she will be forced to...

Yeah, seems to be the consensus so far that strength is how hard you hit and dex is how often you hit (and maybe crit?). Still a bit of a mystery as to what a good ratio is between the two, though.

yay jester hat

Ooh Zomba, you leveling Lancer? I could use a Lancer for the party buffs.
I am leveling lancer (rank 4 or 5 atm) but that's not me >.>

On a jester hat related note we need all the lalafells in the LS to have one. It has to be a rule or something.

Me and 2 friends are still in for day one on Lindblum. Can't see moving will make much difference come retail release. For your list -

Canti - Canti Socanto - Lindblum

Do 8 battle/field and 8 crafting leves. Explore a bit. See if anyone else needs help with leves and will let you tag along. Level up a gathering/crafting job. And when you're done with all that, you get your grind on. Aw yeah.

Starting to look like I'll be ending up Balamb for retail, assuming the new servers are available on day 1. Got a poll going back on our forums and Balamb is winning by a fair margin, with Rabanastre being a distance but solid second. So yeah, if anyone from Rag wants to chill like the old days... :D

Ack, grade 3... is that rank 10? ;x And quarrying is the secondary mining mode right?

And yeah any cactaurs should drop them.

EDIT: Was he quarrying inside Nanawa? I didn't see any quarry spots in there, but I always wasn't able to get far without dying ;(

No just out and around Uldah from what I gathered, I think grade 3 appear around Camp Horizon, TBH it might be better mining in Limsa because the caves are more visable on the map. (thats assuming the same items drop there)

Ah Horizon makes more sense. So it seems that Black Brush gather points are all Grade 1, Drybone Grade 2, Horizon Grade 3, and I guess Bluefog would be Grade 4? I dug in some caves at Black Brush and they were all Grade 1.

wtf is up with the patching in this game, seems so broken!
Yeah it's a pain in the ass.....I really hope it's fixed for retail. I kinda liked open beta but alot if things just seem so 6-7 years ago. I'll prolly pick it up if cataclysm doesn't grab me like I hoped. FF14 has some great ideas, just not implemented in the best ways atm

I got these in The Black Shroud from the river near Camp Tranquill.

I'll be rolling a Miner day 1 at retail :P

I haven't played XI in years but I remember the ranger class being extremely expensive. At first archer seemed reasonable in XIV but now I'm getting a little worried. Obsidian arrows are 133 gil each. 13k gil for a stack of arrows? Doesn't that seem like a lot at rank 14? I go though a stack pretty quick. I know the leves give pretty good rewards but it seems like I'll be spending all of my gil on arrows just so I can do the leves :lol

I've taken up carpentry, I figure maybe I can make some bows and arrows along with furniture if player housing ever happens. But still, making arrows seems like a real pain. One of the recipes for arrows makes 3 arrows per craft. Let's see, 33 crafts per stack...damn. I don't have all weekend to make a few stacks of arrows :lol

Arrow crafting, just like FFXI, will take some time to be refined. You couldn't stack quivers or anything for a long long time in XI.

Not sure why they aren't using their experiences with FFXI in this game but oh well...

Arrows need to stack and be sold in 999.

Why the hell should i lose 10 slots in my inventory, there a lot of common sense things which seem to evade SE.

Kyoufu said:

I really get the feeling that SE is purposely going through the exact same process of evolving FFXIV that they did in FFXI, in order to slow down player progress and prevent people from succeeding too much, leveling too fast, or generally outpacing the pace at which SE is planning on producing new content. That's why there's no AH again at launch for instance.

The funny thing is that crystals can stack up to 999. So if you ask me SE is purposely limiting arrows to 99, to force you to waste time running back to town if you refuse to waste anima teleporting back so you can buy more arrows. I went through about 20-25 stacks of arrows during my random powerleveling session earlier, my inventory only has 80 slots. :lol

Despite all my hate for this game I still keep coming back, which I guess is a good sign.

Just noticed they dropped the cooldown of the MP Regen ability down to 10 minutes. That definitely helps conjurers' MP issues and should be a great step forward.

Edit: Guess I can bitch while I'm here though. Gear still breaks WAY too fast and it's still too much of a hassle to run back to town to get it fixed when it's just gonna break again an hour later.

Can't believe the launch is in 11 days. Vanguard Mark 2 incoming!

You know you're secretly going to pick this game up on day one, and pretend you don't have it on Gaf. :lol

I have modest expectations and was able to have fun 80% of the beta. The 20% that wasn't fun was the first 2 days on my first character I made feeling so damn lost.

:) Pick up the game notworksafe, roll with Gaf, and you can at least have others to share in your pain until things get better.

Regarding crafting... if I'm on a crafting leve, can I use the mats (or the resulting craft) for something other than a leve?

For instance, take some lumber that was given to me to do one Carpenter leve, and take some Growth Formula Alpha that I made using mats given to me to do an Alchemy leve, and make myself a wand instead? Or are the mats/craft results "bound" to my leve?

I fucking hate the word leve.

I'm giving up on my quest. It's kind of discouraging; at the end of the day a rank 7 weapon requires a rank 17 craft. As a result, there seems no getting around the fact that most melees (except gladiators) will be gimped for the first couple of weeks because of this. I suppose if I leveled to 20+ with a level 1 weapon in closed beta, I can do it again ;/ I know in the long term it doesn't mean anything, but... bleh. Kind of spoils the new car smell a bit ;p

Renta, I'm guessing that by the time leatherworkers are high enough to make leather straps, blacksmiths will high enough to make iron. My plan for retail is now to just skip the bronze labrys and start gathering for the iron ;p

Can you even find the leve materials in your inventory?:lol
