Final Fantasy XV gameplay @ PAX West

I actually think this is okay. At least with this approach we won't get same-face designs from Nomura anymore. He is still able to go crazy with the hair and outfits also.

Ravus is a good example of this turning out positively - seeing the Kingsglaive incarnation first, the ingame version with something closer to the standardised semirealistic FF facial structure looks relatively unengaging.

Not in love with this approach.

Seems like character design will soon be dead as scanning tech takes over 😕

Character design is more than defining facial structures of people though. Clothes, hair, tattoos, voices, mannerisms, etc.

But yeah it's pretty much inevitable as scanning is a lot more efficient than manually building the models. At least when devs go for a realistic approach.

This. It's not like Nomura's faces were the most varied and unique part of FF characters in the last 20 years. The Kingsglaive characters' clothes especially are still unmistakably FF, see ridiculous examples like Ardyn or the tons of embellishment on everyone's clothes.

Why are people comparing this scene over and over when there's a huge flash of light in one version that is making all comparisons pointless? (She's also talking in one version, so her lips obviously do look different too. Her hair is also moving.) Seriously, it is probably the exact same face model and it looks just different because half of her face is obscured by that flash of light.

That's exactly my take on the shot comparison.Apart from the lightnig and the fact that are crearly two differently animated frames, the only difference seems the eyelashes, but that seems something similar to how the eyelashes of young Noctis changed presence depending from the rendering setting in the last demo we had on PS4

So who has the marketing rights? PlayStation or Xbox?

I thought it was microsoft because all the FFXV banners at E3 were Xbox branded and plus these were at PAX last week:

PAXWestHERO.jpg

They had a total of one branded banner at E3 they paid for that ran with some of their other games. No one has a marketing deal specifically, SE has to market the game evenly on both platforms.

ahh okay; thanks for clearing that up. I am still unsure where I will end up getting the game. I play the Xbox more, but the PS4 version will run a bit better. On the other hand, I will be getting scorpio next year and im curious to see if it gets an update for it..... modern gaming... too many choices.

If you have the option, the PS4 one seems to be where SE cares the most. I'd be very surprised if SE bothered patching the game a year later for Scorpio when the XB1 version is going to sell very little in the long run.

PS4 is the one I currently have preordered on amazon. Ill end up keeping that preorder most likely. Ps4 will end up being my JRPG machine in the end outside of 3ds/NX, so I might as well keep all the JRPGs on there.

Interesting, Somnus lyrics translated:

But is there still a sung version of Somnus in the full game??? Somnus from the Abbey Road event didn't have lyrics...

It's in the game. The OST even calls the one with the violin the Instrumental Version.

Tabata's said the one specifically with vocals is in the game.

I wonder how the Pro version will compare to the PS4 and XB1 versions...seeing that on a comparison video will probably turn some heads, atleast the ones who are concerned about visuals

The little footage we got of it in the PS4 Pro sizzle reel video looked much better than what I've seen of PS4/XB1 versions. Curious to see more.

I had no plans on getting a ps4 pro.

But there's a voice in my head constantly saying "you've waited 8 years for this game, play it the best way possible"

It also doesn't help that I am Canadian.

Forgive me, wallet. I pray that the OG ps4 trade-in value is strong.

1080p with non dogshit IQ and probably solid 30 unless there is some intense spellcasting overlap is what I'd say.

If they can manage what we saw in the examples of For Honor and Paragon with a solid 1080p resolution and increased image quality/visual effects I'll take it.

My guess is, because they are working down to the wire on the base game itself for PS4 and XB1, i'm guessing the work they will do is going to be limited

I would expect PS4 level visuals, with far less pop in and graphical bugs, and far better draw distance.

In terms of IQ, i think they will go one of the two the minimal effort routes.

locked 1080p instead of variable res like the PS4 and XB1 game, or they will go one step further and implement the checkerboard rendering mode and just use that for 4K sets and 1080p displays alike.

I think i'd take the checkerboard renderer, considering that will be a far higher boost than just locking the game to 1080p. It just happens to also be pretty easy to use.

I love the facial diversity in Kingsglaive. I'm not even a "Nomura hater" by any means but I'm getting tired of the same face he puts everywhere.

Seriously, take the following guy for example. He looks like Cloud, Squall, Snow, Genesis, Noctis, Sion (from The Bouncer), all at the same time!

It's Haurchefant from FFXIV.

90% of Nomura characters have the same face. It's just the way of things with a lot of popular artists and character designers.

These are three different characters from different games designed by Nomura (okay, Type-Next is a concept/tech-demo):

Do many games receive more than one PS4 Pro mode, like Rise of the Tomb Raider receives with 3?
If there's just the bare minimum of one mode I can see it either being the 4K mode in 30fps with no additional graphical updates (most likely since this is what the PS4 Pro is actually about) or a full 1080p mode with solid 30fps and some additional graphical effects, like better shadowing, better LOD and a proper antialiasing solution.

I forget what the trailer, in which the FFXV footage was shown, was about. Was it games running in 4K mode or was it games running in 1080p with additional graphical updates? Or wasn't it specified at all?

That's what happens with most artists who design the same types of models. It is a consequence of designing characters based on non reality based illustrations. Once you get into specifically copying real people, generally speaking a lot of the designer appeal is lost.

This is why i appreciate Naughty Dog's approach. They still make their characters otherworldly stylized without just succumbing to just mo cap, or just face flashing. They add alot of hand drawn animation frames as well, along with designing their characters so they can have a good balance between realism and fiction.

I don't think most games will ship with 3 different modes like Nixxes, just cause its nixxes and they go above and beyond. Even Horizon as a first party game is apparently only shipping with checkerboard mode(for both 4K and 1080p TV's) along with slightly more stable fps in that mode.

As for the FF15 footage, it wasn't specified, but i'm going to assume that it was the 4K mode with slightly enhanced graphical features on top of that, like better LOD, better draw distance, a bit more foliage implemented.

the organization is pretty diverse compared to the mcs. did he design all of them?

KHFMIIplusArt.jpg

Nomura designed all of those characters, specifically he has said of the organization that he wanted them to be distinct, so he focused on different features for them.

Generally speaking, i think the sameface complaint is overblown, but he does use similar templates depending on the base design of the character he is illustrating(young girl, young boy, young adult man young adult woman ect)

ah nice. thanks.

the templates are obvious, but they're not really an issue. eh.

I think for the majority of his characters it's the hair and costume doing to work. Truly the Anime Way™.

that's case for a lot of eastern series. maybe most.

a fitting 'shop job

People keep telling me that we won't see the PS5 until 2018 or 2019. If that's what's really gonna happen then that makes me so much warmer to the PS4 Pro. So you can actually add me to the list of people who are interested in the PS4 Pro. Has anybody found any links to get it for $350 or something less than $400?

Edit: I should prolly post this in the PS4 Pro thread, huh? Lol but just know FFXV gaf hype crew that I am in for PS4 Pro!

i just now got around to seeing the video.

honestly i think it just sold me... do story stuff or ignore it and do hard as balls dungeon crawling. exactly what i want out of a modern FF game

was pretty meh on the game so far, thought about just holding off for the "premium edition" for PC assuming that happens but i'll probably Day One it now

Not 2018. My guess would be 2019 or 2020.

One of Sony's main reasons for introducing it this holiday was to really sell it as a mid generation incremental upgrade. They can't sell it too close to PS4(alienating PS4 users) or too close to PS5, as it has to keep its own reason for existing without being supplanted too early by a new generation.
