Here the eerie surreal atmosphere cranks up to 11. We know these things are magitek robots. SO WHY DOES THAT NEAREST ONE REACT AND MOMENTARILY GLANCE AT NOCTIS? Why are they on their phones, reading papers, conversing, taking the subway like normal people while also exhibiting characteristics (weapons at the ready, etc) that they should only be if they were indeed the Magitek soldiers? It's an extremely unsettling juxtaposition of two different sets of expectations.
Just need to point this out since you mentioned it earlier too. They're not necessarily Magitek soldiers are they? As in the robots as opposed to Niflheim soldiers (which have appeared since very early Versus stuff?)? But still makes it surreal that everyone of them is acting as a normal person reading newspapers and browsing on their smartphones with their helmet on. Just not as much.
It's obvious it's supposed to be confusing visually like, well, a dream/nightmare/vision/omen generally is. For the general viewer, who doesn't know much or anything about the game, this looks very cool on the surface and at the same time piques their interest because they wonder what the hell is happening, and for the fans there are a lot of hidden messages and eastereggs as pointed out by Falk.
EDIT: What I meant in my response pointing to the OP is that it's clear that the trailer is supposed to be a abstract, dream-like vision of King Regis. The long explanation posts aren't needed to know that, but they explain the underlying meaning.
I really don't think so. Although, it wouldn't be new feeling to Final Fantasy or any game developer in general. Also, Final Fantasy is called that because the original team thought it might be their last/final title.

Watched this and was confused at first. Thought to myself midway Noctis must be tripping with them visions. He also can't drive for shit, no wonder you always have your bros drive you around.

Cool trailer! My first thought after watching was, " when did Kojima start collaborating on FFXV?" Just felt like something he'd direct. Ready for release, can't wait.
Well actually I was just unsure if they were actually Magitek but looks like they probably are. Guess I missed that preview but I find it strange that this old model is the more human like in everything I've seen them in. I know they the prototype is combat focused but I don't see how that means more clunky robotic movement to that extent. (And lol the Zaku comparison)
This trailer is Final Fantasy XV having a nightmare about it releasing as FFXIII Versus, where noctis and luna are fated to kill eachother, but King Regis disobeys the crystal god by delaying the game for 10 years
But man, this is basically the Somnus Versus trailer except updated for FFXV. XV has gone most of its life without a proper CG trailer zinger, and here it is.
Man...I feel like if this were released as the reveal trailer for FFXV (assuming Versus never happened), it would have made me as hype for FFXV as i was for Versus XIII
That image surprised me. I was under the impression that only the changyarm soldiers were Magitek, and the infantry with rifles are actually the human soldiers.
Yeah, this is what ive been saying. It's clear that the leakers got their hands on some material before it went out...but everytime a deep story "leak" gets confirmed, it's through trailers or demos that are being openly shown to the public...from which the viewers can easily see where the leaked info came from. The biggest spoiler that was leaked is apparently shown to the player the moment they turn on the game.
Seeing that we're now getting another leak confirmed that snaps into place perfectly, it again just confirms they probably had access to the trailers and advertising stuff with no real context.
Also looks like Umbra is on Luna's side so that means the dog at the end isn't Umbra.
If these dogs are supposed to represent the main characters then the dog at the end has to represent the main villain. I think this is the person talking to Regis at the end.
Speculation
Which I don't think is Ardyn. I think it's Chaos/Garland (but in this universe) who is probably the first king of the Lucis line. There's been a lot of similarities to FF1. I think Ardyn is an Astral but I'm not sure if he's helping Noct or not.
Interesting if he is involved in all of this. Because your right that dog is neither umbra or pryna. Some type of alternate form of someone or something manipulating events and amongst other things.
May this be the return of different crystals? that destroyed the ancient civilization that tried to control them. Repeating itself like from the old prologue storylines and games. Maybe a false crystals? created or tainted by
Chaos/Garland somehow? to send another world into ruin or rule it

It's obvious that there's some vision/dream aspect to the trailer.
However, that doesn't mean "it's supposed to be confusing" is a valid excuse or defense for something that is honestly rather messy. There's a lot of excess action sequences, and the camerawork makes those meh to follow. The 'symbolism' is dropped in your face with no subtlety, and even then at the end the 'dog' change confuses the viewer on what it is supposed to represent. The dog dies in one action sequencethen it lives in the next. There's no purpose to that. The character is at a gas station, but apparently even in a dream he has to have a flashback to his childhood daysbut what newcomer would even understand that? There's no logical progression from one scene to the next, only a bunch of chases and flashy action bits.
If there is a trailer that actually shows clarity, thematic depth, and drops tidbits for the fans, you can look at the recent Civilization VI launch trailer and see what a solid, great trailer actually is. "Omen" is not one, nor is it even in the same league.
I really really liked that trailer. So much so that I wouldn't mind playing through a game with the kind of dark and tragic story that it represents, but at the same time it worked amazingly well as the (well named) omen that set part of the events in the game in motion and explained the direct motivation of some of Regis' actions (that people have been questioning before). Another thing that feels amazing to me is how well it works as a trailer for an uninformed audience as well as working on a deeper level to people who have been following the story. So much so that I think it could even be used as an opening cut scene to the game before Noctis is sent away. And this opinion is just after one watch of it.
Other posters have already explained all the cool details better then I could so not even going to try.

Is it the intro cinematic*? Firaxis Civ stuff has always been amazing. Even BE had a really great opening cinematic.
*edit: yeah it is
edit2: To continue along the line of discussion though, honestly I feel like you're stenciling your opinion onto an objective template. Sure, FFXV fans are going to gobble up anything FFXV, so YouTube like/dislike ratios aren't a particularly useful objective metric, but when stuff Dawn 1.0 has ~6% dislikes, Afrojack Trailer has ~8% dislikes, even Uncovered is hovering around 1.5% dislikes and this one is (for now) at 0.6% dislikes, I think it hit the spot for a far greater number of people than average.

Civilization V1 trailer don't exactly have a narrative storyline with main characters...very odd comparison.
I'm guessing you don't have many dreams? not the deep sleep, aware kind at least. Shit gets crazy in there and stupid incoherent. But the trailer is abit on the nose though.
Really could have did a quick flash near the end and teased that "battle" between "evil" Noctis and Luna rather then show it in full, plus the conclusion. I think they should have lingered less on that. Before going straight to the dog creature, with its glaze. While the skyships did work in the background, maybe of few then are closing in to set the stage for the finally close up.

i think that the white dog is meant to represent Luna. From the looks of things they kept the Romeo and Juliet motif of the Versus XIII concept/trailer and are combining it with a Skyward Sword esque Dual Journey story Where both Noctis and Luna are fighting Seperately to change their fates. Yet their journeys are both paralell and interconnected.
Also Luna looked great. If this plays out how i think it will she's going to be one of the most beloved female FF characters ever.

This is nitpicking that the average Joe and Joanna doesn't care about. Look at the general reception everywhere, which is probably the most unanimously positive it's ever been for a piece of media of this game. To most this is a cool-ass trailer. Someone who doesn't have a clue about FFXV won't care about why there was a flashback to a room from Noctis' childhood because they wouldn't know what it is in the first place and it's just one scene of many that they don't fully understand anyway. They don't have to get everything, as it's not even part of the actual story. It's established early on that what is seen is not real, so they don't expect everything to be logical. What most care about when watching trailers are the "epic", flashy scenes and overall style, like the unique mix of reality and fantasy settings. It also shows the car, combat with its arsenal of weapons, magic, and warping. So, it works both on superficial level for newcomers to pique their interest, which it apparently does for many, and on a bit deeper level for long-time fans, as Falk's post shows.
I...I feel so behind in the narrative hype train, like I failed to get on the express line and am still waiting at some lonely station out in the countryside. No idea what most people in this thread are talking about. The trailer was great, though, guess it's time to watch the anime and movie thing.
I wonder if the scene of Luna being stabbed by Dark Noctis is in the game. I mean, the ESRB description said that
one cutscene involves a woman being stabbed off-screen; another scene depicts a character with a bloodstained wound
. Vague, sure, but that's exactly what happens in this trailer.
Same thing for the post-apocalyptic settings with only robots roaming the streets. After the ending of Type-0
where the Rursus have invaded Academia
, which was similarly eerie to the setting in this trailer, I can easily imagine Tabata putting that in the game. Something like this: after 10 years, the evil forces have taken over the world and have nearly eradicated the human species. In the meantime, the mass-production of Magitek soldiers has led to them becoming as common as normal human beings were in the past, and cities have become ghost towns where those soldiers dwell, as shadows of the once great human race (hence the juxtaposition of those robots acting more like humans). This scenario is also in line with the leaks (
which mentioned there wasn't much left to rule over by the end of the game
) and such an eerie atmosphere that you can feel everywhere you go across the whole game world is very common for FF, e.g. FF7's
looming meteor
, FF9's
returned mist
and the accompanying world map music changes.
Apart from this Type-0 ending-like atmosphere, the story depicted in this trailer is incredibly reminiscent of FFVII:
So basically, Regis fears Noctis isn't a normal person but rather a Sephiroth clone. He fears that, when Noctis departs, Noctis will often have mental breakdowns (
we saw this already, he gets one in Lestallum as well as near Titan
