Fire Emblem Coming To 3DS

NEW FIRE EMBLEM!? IT'S NOT A REMAKE?! I don't have enough yes/celebration/pants explosion/happy feelings gifs to properly show my joy for this.

Saw that trailer and well the new art style looks GLOOOOOOOOOORIOUS way better than those shitty weird sprites or whatever they had on the DS ones. Kind of sad that the new hero is once again a blue haired sword user and that the main heroine looks to be all about MOE IN THE MIDDLE AGES DOING MOE MIDDLE AGES THINGS. I'm cautiously hyped for this, I'm still waiting for my Mystery of the Emblem localization Nintendo. Oh and after this 3DS one if you guys want to remake FE4 on the Wii U in GLORIOUS HD I will not object. I want to see my husbando Sigurd wreck everybody's shit again.

EDIT:

I will cut you, bitch. Nephenee is my waifu.

Meet me somewhere bro. I will await with my halberd in hand.

Oh my. I keep waffling back and forth on getting a 3DS. Never a huge portable guy. But man..new Fire Emblem+Monster Hunter might get me to bite.

Man those environments look awesome! So much better than the shit DS ones.

Also is the 3DS region locked? Will I be able to import this to the US if it doesn't get localized?

I thought the game looked fantastic based on the footage that was shown last night. The actual battle scenes were very nice looking. Classic Fire Emblem game play with lots of flair.

Sorry mate.

Question!

How well did Fire Emblem sell in the West?

Not well enough to warrant the release of 12.

Just get ready to import. Fire Emblem games are very easy to play with no Japanese knowledge. I got into the series around 1999 and we didn't even have translation patches.

Best announcement out of the conference definitely, hopefully it'll get localized.

Yearning for remakes of Genealogy of Holy-War and 776 as well.

Only if it's on the WiiU in glorious HD. I could see using the screen on the controller for controlling the units or having the entire map on there or something. It would be amazing.

I don't think that's a very fair way to judge this game's chances, though. 12 was a remake and it came after a lackluster DS game that was another remake of the first FE. There were still 2 GBA games and a GC and Wii game, so it's obvious that there is some interest.

The optimistic way of looking at it is this: there hasn't been a new FE that didn't make it to the US since FE6, the first one on GBA.

Well...except for Fir :) A lean mean criticalling machine beats a puny healer anytime :)

And Nephenee annihilates both. Nephenee in my games would never get hit, double every time, and then have criticals here and there. She was an unstoppable killing machine of hhhhhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnnngg!

Easily the best thing announced at Nintendo's conference IMO. The era of shitty remakes is finally over!

I'm not sure about the character designs though. They are good, but not a patch on FE7-FE10. Everything else looks great though. Too bad it'll be at least a year and a half before us Euros get to play it... :/

Can someone rip the 1 minute 12 second video from the official site? That's not on youtube yet. Or can someone tell me how to rip it? I have some flash video rippers but they all suck.

Hm, I'm afraid I might have to disagree. Fir still has the old 30% crit and superior skill and speed from the swordmaster. Her coolness offsets her lackluster strength. And swords >>> lances (despite lances > swords) And GBA swordmaster crit animations blow Nephenee's crit animation out of the water. Sorry :P

Fir + Noah support + Wo Dao >> All

(still like Nephenee though :))

SD and 12 looked like shit. This looks really nice. That could help!

Also might help that 3DS is still in the library-building phase. I can understand them being really picky when the system has 5 years of solid games to compete with.... 3DS games don't even have a whole section to themselves yet in most stores.

Here's another reason why I think this game will make it to the US: Nintendo knows that the 3DS needs games, both in the west and in Japan. That's not all though. If Nintendo wasn't going to bring this FE over to the US it would make more sense for them to get IS working on an Advance Wars game since that series has always been marketed to both major territories.

I think the fact that Nintendo chose FE over Advance Wars (along with the fact that it is an entirely new game) makes western localization look very likely.

I want to be right so badly.

Fir was good but Nephenee is probably still one of my favorite FE characters of all time, with Sigurd being number 1. Also are you kidding me? Halberds and by extension lances beat swords every time. Swords wish they could have like 10 weapons in one. Fucking halberds forever.

I'd also like to point out Famicom Wars DS2: The Lost Light (aka Advance Wars: Days of Ruin) never made it to Japan for some reason.

But I'd say poor performance of FE SD (well it was sold for $10 in Walmart bargain bins) and its sequel not addressing the major fan complaint (the graphics) made it a no-go for US/EU localisation.

Damn, now I want to play a FE game :( But the only localized one I haven't finished is FE:DS and yeah... I don't plan to go back to that.

There is a fan-translation for the first GBA game, right? Is it easy to get a used copy of that one? And are there any other fan-translations for Japan exclusive FEs? (Though, I imagine that it's probably nearly impossible to get the older games for a decent price...)

Though Nephenee was a monster in both games the lack of background information on her sucked. The stuff about her accent didn't really do it for me. Fir growing up and becoming the Saint of Swords was very kick ass :) Agreed on Sigurd though.

-Yes, has a few bugs caused by pointers though (wrong support conversations would play). The script used is up on Gamefaqs.
-You see copies up on various marketplaces. Pretty expensive though (>$50). As with any GBA/DS game watch out for counterfeits (and its getting hard to tell).
-Yes, all of them to some extent have a translation (and/or scripts available, I prefer using the scripts*). Getting the older games isn't too bad, well at least 3 and 4 on the SFC cart only are cheap (3 especilly with its 600,000 copies sold). Thracia 776 (5) is the most expensive one to get as it was download kiosk only for a while then a boxed product came about (plus it was a SFC game in 1999/2000). There was also a limited edition which goes for (last I checked) $350. The FC games I recall being kinda expensive though (and you don't really want to play 1, either play book 1 in FE3 or Shadow Dragon) but nowhere near that level. I have a feeling the franchise in general has some price inflation on easy to access marketplaces to westerners these days though. If you own a Japanese Wii you can get all of them on the Virtual Console for the standard VC pricing.

*-How the text generally comes out of these translations can look sloppy if you ask me due to bad font choice or occasional bug (maybe I'm just too used to the Japanese). As was previously said, its easy to play in Japanese due to weapons having icons, just memorise the stats screen and what options do what and you'll be fine.

I'd say it's because the series is not popular at all in Japan. Dual Strike managed to sell only about 30'000 units. It's number 301 on this list. .

The Fire Emblem franchise is about ten times more popular (deservedly so, I'd say. I always tend to lose interest in the Advance Wars games before I finish them).

I agree, but the background for a lot of the characters of PoR and RD were lacking. The only thing I don't like about Nephenee is the country accent. *Brofist* I really want an FE4 remake. Those maps were glorious.

There are fan translations of most of the games. I've played FE4 and FE6, the latter being the GBA one you're referring to. They're both good translations.

I no longer enjoy mindlessly playing and grinding in RPGs. The storyline and characters have to be at least somewhat compelling.

Intelligent Systems are pretty bad when it comes to 3D really. There is hope. Compare the first screenshots of Path of Radiance (they are so bad a few fansites mistake them for the N64 version*) to the released game. Out of battle I mean, in-battle the first screenshots looked like Tales of Symphonia.
*-The N64 version; Maiden of Darkness never saw any official screens released but likely become The Binding Blade/Sword of Seals/Fuuin no Tsurugi on GBA (as that was also initially called Maiden of Darkness).

Does Intelligent Systems pretty much handle every Fire Emblem game's development? I appreciate the games for the game play (and that's obviously what I find to be most important), but it's a shame that the Fire Emblem franchise, which is honestly the only Nintendo franchise that I look forward to seeing new installments in, doesn't seem to have a fully competent developer behind it. Yes, the games play very well, but the series transition into 3D (or even pre-rendered graphics) has always been met with considerable criticism from fans. (The GameCube and Wii installments didn't look bad, per se; they just looked really bland.)

This game actually looks pretty decent, aside from the aforementioned clipping issues. I could understand the feet sinking into the ground in a free-roaming game in which the terrain wasn't completely level, but these are pretty much canned animations we're talking about. Obviously, there's more to worry about than just feet sinking into the ground, as we still need to wait for word of whether or not this game will make it out of Japan. Still, I can't help but be concerned until I see simple issues like this sorted out.

The Fire Emblem development team is Intelligent Systems, and Software Planning & Development Production Group No.2 (NCL). Both units are located in Nintendo's Kyoto Research Building. IS handles the main development, and SPD PG2 handles production, coordination, and additional game design. Fire Emblem Sacred Stones and the GameCube / Wii Fire Emblems had a lot of contracted developers in the core team as well.

But I think the graphics are just fine. I just hope we see a Days of Ruin sequel soon.

If you're grinding or playing a Fire Emblem mindlessly then you're doing it wrong.

Exactly. Part of what makes Fire Emblem games so fascinating is that they are designed to all but eliminate grinding from the SRPG formula.

I played the FE6 translation - it's good, some errors here and there which might have been fixed in later patch. People who've played FE7 and FE8 (the 2 GBA games which came out in the West), and want to play this FE6 translation, should note that FE6 is much, much harder than they might be used to.

I also got reproduction carts made of the translations of the Famicom Fire Emblems. Life's good.

Yeah, except on the highest difficulties on late levels you have to kinda grind. That is accepted though as the beauty is that you can manage to get far without it.

Well in some Fire Emblem games there isn't even an opportunity for grinding, like FE7. The only "grinding" you can do is through battle arenas, and that aspect of the game is extremely minimal compared to grinding in most RPG's.

Yes. This and permadeath are what makes Fire Emblem so appealing to me. There is little repetition and there are real consequences for failure.

High level Fire Emblem play can be done without gaining any levels. Ever seen the youtube videos of people who played through FE7 with 0% growth rates? They hacked the game so that they won't gain stats when they level up. Regular speed runners can beat the game without worrying about gaining levels and stats. Check out some Thracia 776 SSS rank runs.
