Firewatch PC performance thread

Played through the whole thing on Ultra and it never skipped a beat (barring the brief stutter where new areas loaded into memory, but I blame the engine for that not my set-up)

I'm surprised at the range of performance problems, as the whole thing seemed pretty bullet-proof here. No bugs, crashes or anything.

Yeah, my play time yesterday was rock solid on Ultra with a 980. No issues other than a stutter loading a new area.

The game crashes at the loading screen when I attempt to load an existing save or even start a new game. Did a full reinstall and still get the same issue. Played through a few hours yesterday perfectly fine
up until the fire
and now this. If any one has any ideas for a fix or experience with this I'd appreciate some help

Question for you all

I have a aging desktop (around 5 or 6 years old now) with a i7 overcloced to 3.0ghz with a 660ti. How well do you think I could run this? I was going to go with the PS4 version but not so happy about the performance reports I have heard about it.

Thanks.

Im running a i7 860 oc to 3.5, 8gb RAM, GTX 680 2GB, SSD at 1080 and everything set to ultra except motion blur & bloom (only because I don't like the way those features look) and am steady at 60fps with some dips here and there but not super often. That is over 2 hours played. It seems like performance is all over the place for others though.

i52500k @4.5ghz
8GB RAM
Windows 10
980ti

Playing on Ultra at 1080p and getting a pretty steady 60fps. Some drops during what seems like auto-saving or loading but its been pretty smooth about two hours in.

I'm surprised FXAA via Nvidia CP works as adaptive vsync (half refresh rate) didn't work for me with this game.

FXAA is an injected post-processing pass which will happen over any window which output D3D context. And driver level adaptive vsync is swap chain control which won't work in a windowed environment because the driver can't override Windows DWM. Since Firewatch doesn't have exclusive fullscreen mode and always run in a (borderless) window essentially it won't work with either driver level vsync or driver level oversampling.

This game runs like a dream for me. Averaging around 90FPS @ 1440P max settings with my rig (980 Ti, i7 4790k, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD). I wish you could super sample though. Has anyone had any luck injecting SMAA with Reshade? The game immediately crashes for me when I've attempted it.

Small hotfix is out on Steam:
* Fix several small issues with Russian localization
* Fix rare issue with interrupting Delilah on end of day 76
* Gracefully handle corrupt save data
* Fix issues backing out of reading notes
* Fix issues with Linux build

Where is the save data/playthrough info stored? I can't find it anywhere and am attempting a full reinstall and a fresh play through.

Smooth sailing here...

4790K 16GB
GTX 980 ti FTW 6GB
No CPU/GPU OC
Custom fan curve

1440p60 locked, max settings. Slight stutters here and there going from area to area, which I'm chalking up to loading/saving, but otherwise, the game performs beautifully and looks great.

i5 4590 @ 3.3GHz
8GB RAM
GTX 970 4GB
SSD

Running at a pretty solid 1080p/60fps with random drops to the mid-40's (only really noticed one so far in about 1.5 hours with the game). Fans running pretty quietly as well.

Glad I went with the Steam version, not even for the performance, but mostly because this game would make my PS4 sound like a jet engine and that's ridiculously distracting for a game that's supposed to be about the outdoors. Sound design is fantastic.

Silly thing but just in case it hits anyone else:

I had to go into the nvidia control panel in my laptop and pin the game to the discrete gpu, for some reason Optimus wasn't picking it up properly.

So I have an i5-3570k @ 3.4Ghz, 8GB RAM, and a GTX660 (which... might be overclocked, but I'm really not sure.)

I don't expect to be able to play with everything on max, but would it run than on PS4? (assuming the devs do push a patch that fixes the weird perf issues there)

Small hotfix is out on Steam:
Bit weird. Yesterday, the game was running fine, now I've got sound stuttering all over the place. Also run into a bug that seemingly stops me from continuing. SPOILER
I'm supposed to report "something" I've found in the cave but nothing happens. Went to my tower, back into the cave, back to the tower, nothing.

This is actually very close to the dev machines we used and you should see pretty good results at 1080p high.

Played it for about an hour yesterday pre-patch. Played for an hour at 1080p on an i5 4690k and a 970. Solid 60fps through apart from one quick instance where it dropped to 57.

However after an hour the screen went green and my display driver crashed.

Edit: everything on ultra but motion blur turned off.

You should get a little Eye icon prompt as soon as you get out.

I am on average 55 fps with motion blur on. I will turn off motion blur when I get home.

Something that might be useful for any future patch, is to make getting your radio out to respond, automatically put the map away, as you can't respond to conversations with the map out - fumbling to put the map away, then get the radio out, eats into the countdown during which you lose time to respond.

man technically this game is a mess. If Unity engine is causing all of this then it's 100% not worth these supposed ease of use. The game itself is very good, but the art is just getting butchered by horrible shadows and pop-in.

Just to reiterate for the morning crowd, I played through the entire game at 1920x1080 on Ultra settings on an Alienware Alpha:

2.9 GHz Intel Core i3-4130T
4GB DDR3
GeForce GTX 860M with 2GB of GDDR5

It ran at a fairly steady 30fps with just a few hitches. The lower frame rate didn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all, and was well worth it considering how gorgeous it is.

Yeah, my experience on an i5-4690k at stock speed, 16GB RAM, and stock 980Ti has been a solid 60FPS at ultra with some odd sudden frame drops for no apparent reason.

Incredibly disheartening to hear this. I'll wait until they're a few more patches in before buying. I mean, I do have a 980 Ti, but I have zero tolerance for stutter, pop-in, etc. Damn.

I reinstalled the Xbox One controller driver now it works, however I have a different issue now:

The game keeps switching back to 720p, I can select 1080p, but when I go back it is always set to 720p. Anyone else get this?

I guess I'm the only one with this issue, the weird thing is it only happens on my TV, not on my regular monitor. I really wanna play this on the couch, but not in 720p.

I can't seem to be able to force vsync from the Nvidia CP cause the in-game vsync sucks... Has anyone successfully forced vsync from Nvidia CP?

I'm kind of surprised at how well it's running for me based on what I'm reading. The 5820k + 780 combo delivers a rock solid 60fps in all but one situation (in which it dipped momentarily for reasons unknown). Perhaps, being a Unity game, the CPU plays a larger role here?

Maybe, I'm on a 5930K and never seen it dip below 60, or if it did I didn't catch it... usually average 70-80 FPS, and that's at 3440x1440 on a 980 Ti.

You can't force V-sync because the game runs in borderless windowed. You should just cap the frame rate using RTSS.

It runs fine for me on a 290 (and a 4570) at 1440p. There may have been momentary dips, but nothing significant enough to notice.

Do get the Unity stutter from time to time.

I assumed as much, and capping the frame rate using RTSS makes it stutter frequently which isn't really playable.

The witness and now firewatch, what's with those games that don't allow you to run on exclusive full screen...

GTX 750 Ti
i5 - 4690k 3.5GHz
8GB
1920 X 1200

Verything on Ultra and Motion Blur turn off. I was getting on average 45 -50 fps, so I used nvidia inspector to limit fps to 30.

DS4 works great, and the only issue I've come across is when I read notes and the words stay on screen when I close it so I have to bring up the map to "fix it".

Not finish with the game, but close to 6 hours in and everything has been smooth sailing.

You'll be waiting a while then as they are engine issues.

Any idea why when using the Xbox one controller on windows it doesn't show button prompts and still shows keyboard prompts?

Is it a bug or are button prompts not implemented?

(Fantastic game by the way, loving it so far)

You have to go into the controls option and change it to controller instead of keyboard. This will change the button prompts.

I may run it at that, then. I have the same model (but with 8GB of RAM) and have been playing at 1080p w/high settings fluctuating pretty steadily around 60. Random drops happen out of nowhere though sometimes. Looks great!

I'm getting wonderful performance over here on my 6700k @ 4.6ghz and 980 Ti @ 1440p. Anywhere from 80 to 110. I have another Ti but the game doesn't support SLI which is fine in this case as I don't need it. Max settings.

Add me to the camp of people who had perfect performance yesterday and nothing today. Most people are getting crashes when trying to load and I'm not even getting that. My game flat out will not start up. I'm getting access violation issues according to the logs. Going to try it on my laptop and see how that works. I've got a gaming laptop so if it plays I guess it's acceptable, but from the amount of people who started having issues after this tiny bug fix patch, it seems like the QA might have been inadequate.

I'm getting the sound stuttering thing a lot too. It's almost every time I begin a conversation when I see something and report it, etc.

I can't enjoy this game yet because I'm unable to get a single controller to work to a degree that the game is playable. Yes, I'm changing the controls in the game as appropriate.

Steam Controller - touch pads work, but none of the buttons, triggers or analogue stick when a gamepad profile is applied.
XB360 Controller - Initially nothing worked, but reading posts about Unity's shitty input manager lead me to remove SteamVR(!) and now I have working analogue sticks and face buttons, but no triggers.

I'm going to create a KB+M config for the Steam Controller, because those input devices seem to be working, but man, what a weird thing to mess up. I have zero controller problems in the other 100+ games in my library. I don't use any joypad/stick mapping software at all or other peripherals.

Fake edit: Seems like they've updated their information in the steam forums to say the Steam Controller is currently unsupported on Windows 8 and 8.1, which could account for some of the issues I see.

GTX 970, i5-3350p, 8gb RAM....I just switched it to ultra without changing any sub settings at all. It was ok. I had an occasional stutter or hitch, but most of the time it was around 60 fps. One area had super crazy pop in that was weird, because it never happened again

Edit: forgot, was playing at 1080P

I am running the game in 1080p in High settings with Vsync off. No stuttering, no problem whatsoever. My config is:
  • Intel Pentium G2020 @ 2.9 GHz
  • 1 GB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7770 @ 1 GHz
  • 8 GB DDR3 RAM @ 667 MHz

i5 4590 @ stock speed
8GB RAM
GTX 970
HDD install

Ran like a dream on Ultra/1080p. I think it only dipped to 50fps for a while in one area (Cottonwood) but didn't encounter any performance issues outside of that.

Yep. I've been using the steam controller and it works flawlessly on windows 10 (including mixing gamepad and kb/m mapping).

Any reason you can't update to 10? It's free isn't it?

It's on my list of things to get around to. I'm using 8.1 Enterprise, so it means I need to jump through some small hoops, rather than just clicking an icon and waiting.
My htpcs run Win10, so I'm not just stubbornly refusing to use it or anything.

Anyway I'm now playing this game using steam controller and steam in-home streaming to a Win10 client.

Locked it to 30 yesterday using RTSS, set v-sync to off, much better now. I feel like I'll finish my playthrough today, lovely game.
