First Assassin's Creed Review ( GameInformer )

GremlinInTheMachine said:
Memorizing layouts and routes doesn’t require any skill. They’re acts of rote memorization. They’re analogous to memorizing a list of names. How many people memorize lists of names for fun?

Planning attack and escape routes requires only a marginal degree of skill. It’s mainly an exercise in determining which route is least frequented by enemy characters, which itself is dependent on the rote memorization of layouts and routes.

Eavesdropping is highly passive. The act itself requires you to remain inactive while you simply listen in on a conversation. The only skills required are determining which characters have something relevant to say and where along their routes they’ll say it. The latter is a simple matter of observation. And the former rarely requires much analysis because the characters’ dialogue is inevitably very limited.

That isn’t to say that it’s objectively unfun. Fun’s subjective. But it does explain why a lot of people don’t find it fun.

So it's like Theif Deadly Shadows but more of a chore + it gets some Parkour elements and horses. Huh.

There are no other games to talk about :D

AC is just the perfect game for me. I know what Ubi Montreal tried and apparently managed to achieve with it and I agree with just about any design decision they've made so far.

I love the music, the art direction, the (optional) depth and the atmosphere. It's one of these rare games that doesn't look gamey, it's something you wouldn't be embarrassed to show to someone who is not a gamer.

It's like someone took the concept from my mind and said "Hey, let's make a game for this Frenck guy". Maybe you like being kicked down long hallways full of scripted events by developers, but that's not my thing.

There are hardly any other games that interest me and I don't have much motivation to post about shitty games anymore or discuss the same shit that has been discussed endless times before. That's why my post history looks the way it does.

Look, Jade, you better not truly reveal yourself on GAF until the game finally releases then you can just troll the review topics. As it stands now, most people just want to bone you regardless of how good your game is or isn't.

Are you saying that when you play AC you're going to "learn the routes" of each of the enemies and make sure you take a route they do not go? Your going to learn the routes in each of these kilometer wide cities, and learn how the AI works?

Out of interest...do you want to play a game and have fun, or do you want to learn how to design a level and code AI?

I have no idea how difficult the game is so I don't know how thorough you'll need to be. But memorizing routes and layouts is the core of stealth gameplay, isn't it? That and waiting around for an opening.

Jade? What are you talking about.

I'm Patrice Brisebois.

Can I borrow your review copy for a week or 2? Atleast tell me how you got to play this game all the way through already.

I've already said that my argument is based on previews. If you can play it balls out, which some people claim you can, then my argument is a wash and I'll buy the game.

It's like talking about how good/boring the NFL games for this week are on friday based on what ESPN tells you. You haven't played the damn thing yet.

This game is going to be amazing beyond words, yet will probly be the most criticized game of the year. Hell it already is and its not even out yet.

Terrible analogy. Games are highly derivative, and there have been detailed previews for the game.

Oh, and one more thing:

For the people here who worry about AC being repetetive and not having anything other to do besides killing and finding flags: cheer up. Remember Shadow of the Colossus?? That game surely was repetitive, but damn I spent so, so many hours on it. I could easily explore for hours and marvel at the beauty of the game, and there were only freaking turtles and birds and lizards. AC has got whole cities, with loads of people!

Stop worrying ;)

Just like anything else a lot of games surprise while others dissapoint, it's amazing how you can criticize in detail different aspects of AC without ever playing it.

Also, I feel sorry for anyone who actually bases their opinion on games from previews. This isn't the place to argue the quality of some of the popular game sites out there so I'll just leave it at that.

Are you trying to convince us, or yourself here?

You do realize this goes both ways?

I think you mistook me for frenck. :lol

If I sound defensive, it's only because there seems to be SO MUCH hate for this game. Which is sad considering it's an original IP from an accomplished dev team and it's different from so many other games this holiday season.

all I said when I saw that review was "oh shit!". I have been interested in this for a while now and I'm glad to see after all of the skepticism since E3 that it has really come together well. But of course this now means that I have yet another game to buy this month!

Skip can you answer this question? I'm not sure if I'm going too far, it's quite subjective anyway. But when you kill someone in Assassin's Creed- does it feel like you've actually killed someone? [/molyneux]

the guards, not so much. but the targets and how they tie into the story provides a sense of accomplishment, and they try to inject moral ambiguity into that.

Hm. I expected an answer closer to "I've never killed anyone, so I wouldn't know."

Color me surprised!

My bad. :lol

(And I'm probably coming off as some prick who wants the game to fail. I've been as excited for this game as everyone else for this, though.)

9.5!

Can't wait!

i don't know why everyone's down on the combat. i don't see why 3d action games are obligated to include EXCITING 3 HIT COMBOS. i like the look of ac's 'single decisive strike' idea. leave the dmc routine to dmc and its various derivatives.

I don't know about the combat mechanics, but the flow of it has looked artificial and dumb, and anything but convincing.

why the hell isnt mario galaxy there, I thought you had a Wii.

Yeah, the problem with that is that I can't stand 3D platformers of any stripe. I've deliberately avoided mentioning this.

bet those same people complaining like race games.

go figure on that one.

want to know what the huge problem is going to be? here it is, right in the middle of the game informer review:

In a fight, your open hand button might grab a foe, but when running along rooftops the same button will reach for a distant ledge

thats going to end in nothing but stupid controls in strange situations

Are you crazy? Grabbing opponent in combat - Grabbing ledge while performing a jump. Makes perfect sense to me.

If i am jumping i press it and i will grap a ledge, if i am in a fight i press it and i grab them. Sounds simple enough
