first Boktai DS pic

Nice... Glad they stuck with 2D, is there still going to be a light sensor now (GBA slot?) or maybe they'll use the system clock or something?

do i have to go outside to play this? hated that concept.

Ok this seals the deal. Because of this one game, Kojima has validated the existance of the DS for me. I liked Boktai 2's gameplay.... I liked it a lot. I would actually have bothered buying it and playing it if not for the STUPID sun sensor crap, because for me to play any handheld, it would be either on transportation or in bed before sleeping. Now, with the ARTIFICIAL SUN system, the article proudly proclaims "You will no longer have to physically leave your house like before!". Well personally I don't give a rat's ass about leaving the house or not, but rather about enjoying the game as a stand alone game with no influence from the outside world. The graphics look GREAT too! Sweet!

Please please please no sensor! That's the only reason why I didn't buy the Boktai games on GBA. I mostly play handheld games at night.

edit:
"You will no longer have to physically leave your house like before!"
Really, does it say that? So no sensor I guess. Wow that would be sweet :)

I loved the sensor, it was an interesting and I feel a successful gameplay experiment.

But I'm not complaining that it's gone.

Really disappointed that they didn't try to create a nice 3D 'Ocarina of Time' style engine for Boktai DS. But I absolutely love Boktai 1 & 2 and the 2D art in those games is awesome, so this isn't a total loss.

Plus, if we ever see a Boktai on Revolution, maybe that will be the time to finally see it in 3D...

Overall, I'm just glad to see the DS game materialize, because I thought for awhile that it might become vaporware.

BTW, wasn't Boktai 3 GBA supposed to see NA release on Dec 31 2005? Has it been moved/delayed?

Ok I'm so grateful to Kojima-sama that I'm going to translate some of the article here. :lol

It is possible to play even without a sensor!
With the sun within the DS, you will no longer need to physically go outdoors to play! The artificial sun changes the nature of the game and allows you to enjoy this adventure no matter where you are!

Here comes the night!
With the time cycle within the game, as there is day there will also be night.

It goes on to show that there are also animated Sunrises, and weather changes such as rain and clouds.

I tried to dig up an NA release date for Boktai 3... and it looks like it is now Japan Only!!!! WTF?

I have been waiting for #3 for what feels like ages... hopefully it'll make its way over here somehow.

+ Another Copy
i really loved the first boktai (the second too was a good game but i liked the first a lot more) and althought i can understand why people didn't like the idea of the sun sensor, you have to admit that it was pretty cool to think "oh crap! the sun is setting! i have to hurry!"

Looks as good as the previous versions (even better with no light sensor BS), so does it have a stable release date yet (Q3-Q4 2006 maybe).. ?!

It says it's possible to play without the sensor.. does that mean that there will be a sensor available too?

Holy shit. I bought the first one and I like the concept but dammit it is so hard to see the DS screens in direct sunlight. Maybe with the DSlite I can actually beat that game...

But yeah, plus one sale here.

I thought Boktai 1 was decent and Boktai 2 was pretty good, so I hope they keep improving. No requirement to be out in the sun in order to play is a big plus for me.

I have a feeling this is going to flop in japan. nearly all of konamis ds games have faild in japan so far. they should make some Non Games instead, maybe a DDR DS

Gomeon, Yu-Gi-OH and Power Pro did pretty well. Actually, nearly all Konami's DS stuff is pushing comparable numbers to their GBA predecessors.... they really haven't had a "flop" yet.

No. I think maybe I phrased it badly. What the sentence implies is that there is no sensor with Boktai DS, but it is still possible to play the game. Since the Boktai series has always been reliant on sun, it would be assumed the gameplay would not "work" without a sensor, but now with an artificial sun it works. :D

Didn't each of them sold around 40.000 the first week in Japan?
So each of them might have already reached or is close to 100.000 worldwide.

I think they should have had both. Like, maybe you could use one of the first three Boktais as the sensor.

Not if they're smart and revolve the entire game around the artificial sun! I would like for the game to be able to influence the sun not just via day/light cycle and weather changes but by story elements actually changing the effectiveness of the sun or even bosses because able to "block off" the sun until you disable them, etc. It could make for a gameplay experience even better than Boktai 2.

Looks pretty great. The first two Boktais seemed like really neat games, but I could never get into them because of the sunlight sensor. Most of my handheld gaming is done at work, and it's hard for me to find the time to just go sit outside and play games.

Here, though, the artwork looks nice, what I can see of the in-game stuff looks great, and I love the top screen usage, and as duckyroll says, there's so much they can do to incorporate that into the story and gameplay.

I remember picking up Boktai 1 the first day it was released. Too bad it was raining out so there was no sun which was needed pretty close to the begining of the game.

Boktai 1 = my favorite GBA game to date
Boktai 2 = what did they do to my favorite GBA game
Boktai 3 = not coming to NA = Konami you bastards

drum roll

Boktai 4 ... looks like a GBA game and forfeits the one feature that made it unique. Didn't even attempt a 3d overworld? Boktai would be SO awesome if it had a 3d world, even with sprite-based characters, ala Xenogears or FF Tactics. This is a disappointment. Come on, Konami, you can do better than this!
