First look at New Super Mario Bros. WiiU?

I think the separation between foreground and background elements looks just right. The background is more painterly; in real life, things get "bluer" with distance. The foreground is crisp and clear and solid, which makes sense, since it's there where your focus needs to be. Everything else just makes the overall package feel more magical. And "magic" is something that's been missing from the NSMB titles until now, imo. These jutting mountains, whimsical trees, plateaus and parallax-scrolling fields make it seem so much more special. First time I've been excited for a NSMB game from a "world-building" standpoint. :)

Yeah, sure, this would be cool, but I don't think it really fits in with a mainline Mario game aimed at the masses. The graphical style of NSMB fits its purpose. Everything is clean and easy to read.

But dont tell them that! Anyways people acting like thats the only level or something...what the hell is going on today?

I had read that the next nsmb is intended to be a downloadable game for 3ds and wiiu at launch. Was that ever confirmed or was it just speculation?

I don't know about you, but I feel a lot more comfortable buying these kinds of games at cheaper dlc prices. That might also explain the "lazy" graphics people are complaining about (although I think it looks just fine)

NSMB2 is 3DS and will be downloadable and at retail. We don't know the name of this game or if it will be downloadable.

A mountain like the one in the background can also be seen on the world map - would be pretty cool if the levels actually have backgrounds that are consistent with the map.

Nintendo should really thing outside the box. How amazing would this be on Wii U?

That's pretty. There would be nothing wrong with Nintendo making a game that looked like that.

But that's not the goal of the current 2D SMB franchise.

Folks act like Nintendo is idiotic and has zero creativity or whatnot, every time any NSMB game is shown - as if every other Nintendo game that people rave over doesn't exist, like the Mario Galaxy games.

The fact that Nintendo makes both kinds of games should have gotten the point across by now.

This style of SMB games sells tens of millions of copies a pop. They become the everyman games that everyone loves and nobody is turned away from. Well, except for some sort of gaming art snob, I guess.

Therefore, this series has a purpose, and a highly profitable one too.

It would be idiotic of Nintendo to drop it. It's one of the best things they've got going for themselves.

In a Mario game? No. One thing I like about the NSMB art style is that it has incredible visual clarity: I'm always aware of exactly what's solid and what's not, where there are blocks and where there aren't. I actually really like the screens we have here, they have the same clarity but there's finally some embellishment.

I'm sorry but i refuse to believe this is an official mario game. Mario wii u will need to look much better than this, and frankly rayman origins and rayman legends make this look completely amateur

In my opinion, the ultimate art style would be like the one from Wario Land: The Shake Dimension. But I'm fine with this one.

The fact of the matter is that no matter what the fuck NSMB look like, it's gonna sell a billion copies. They dont have to break the bank or think outside the box for the art direction. It makes them money, so they're gonna keep doing it. That's what businesses do.

Basically. Its sort of like their Angry Birds. Its a total cash cow.

I'm sure the 3D Mario game will be a graphical showcase that knocks everyone's socks off.

Absolutely, and it looks phenomenal on a portable system like the Vita. Looks far better than this.

Yeah, this can't be for Wii U. Must be for Wii.

Just noticed on the Mii/achievement screen that one of them says "Being a flying squirrel is way more fun than it should be." Tanooki confirmed or a new suit?!
Likely a new suit, a flying Squirrel sounds like a gliding based suit, therefore we can add more SMW influence and my hype can increase further.

This game is probably one of those download service types to introduce us to nintendo online downloads. This will probably have free world update like angry birds where new castles are introduced for free for the first year and in the second year you will basically get paid dlc instead of a nsmb2 so sales will just stack up on each other and the numbers look monumental. Will keep people playing the game for ages and having that social aspect might add a meta game scenario to keep people more interested about the game rather than the game itself. Kind of like self promotion which is better than direct advertitising in my view.

If you replaced those sprites with characters and enemies from any other game, nobody would be Impressed with those graphics and that art style. Nintendo continues to be extremely conservative with their main IP.

My man

I'm not sure if the NSMB artstyle is what lead to millions of copies sold is it?

I don't think they expect anyone to be impressed with the graphics. This isn't meant to be a visual showcase. Its simplistic, its something their audience recognizes, and like I said above it has a nice clarity to it. Is it beautiful? No. But I think its fine.

I really hate the generic look of NSMB, man they need to fire the artists that work on these games. What happened to the Nintendo that did inspired shit like Yoshi's Island?

This looks almost exactly like NSMB Wii in Dolphin. The one exception are the more detailed backgrounds.

How could anyone seriously be looking forward to this?
I am. NSMB Wii is the most fun I've had with a Nintendo title in years.

I just hope the co-op is still as infuriating and random.

I'd still be impressed with the art style. But what's really remarkable is how those jutting mountains, treetop plateaus, etc, don't look like anything from previous Mario games -- and yet they feel right at home in the Mario universe. They evoke the charm of Super Mario World without straight-up ripping off the look of that game. And of course, knowing you'll have rock-solid Mario platforming and top-notch level design set against these appealing new backdrops, in crisp clear HD, is a lovely proposition.

No other company gets a pass at their biggest IP looking "fine."

There's no reason this game couldn't be done on a tablet where it belongs and would do far better business than Wii U. It's a wonder Nintendo shareholders haven't forced Iwata out of the company yet.

I don't think people should put a lot of hopes on what was shown during ND being the final game they show on Tuesday... could be wrong but it seems to shout concept to me

Ah man, idiots like this is part of the reason why I LOVE E3. And E3 hasn't even started yet!

And this guy too. But unfortunately he's always here... :(

They've more or less confirmed a NSMB title will be at E3. Here we see a NSMB title with background elements never seen in the series before, plus an all-new world map with Miiverse-integrated functionality. It's the actual game.

First thing I looked at was the background. It's amazing, gives back so many nostalgic memories for some reason.
