I think the separation between foreground and background elements looks just right. The background is more painterly; in real life, things get "bluer" with distance. The foreground is crisp and clear and solid, which makes sense, since it's there where your focus needs to be. Everything else just makes the overall package feel more magical. And "magic" is something that's been missing from the NSMB titles until now, imo. These jutting mountains, whimsical trees, plateaus and parallax-scrolling fields make it seem so much more special. First time I've been excited for a NSMB game from a "world-building" standpoint.
