First look at New Super Mario Bros. WiiU?

No other company gets a pass at their biggest IP looking "fine."

No other company has an IP that is so beloved for it's gameplay that the graphics really don't matter at all.

Well, that's not true. Tetris and Pac-Man don't need to look at all good. Neither should Sonic, but Sega plays by your rules with that and look how it's turned out over the years.

I really hate the generic look of NSMB, man they need to fire the artists that work on these games. What happened to the Nintendo that did inspired shit like Yoshi's Island?

They should fire the artists that helped create the most successful string of Mario games EVER.

Yes, that's an intelligent business decision.

It's a 2D mario game, shit sells itself. Doesn't change the fact that artistically, it looks like ass and always has.

It's nice that there's an iconic structure in the background, even though it's a flat 2D image. It's nice there's more parallax too, and that some of the tiles are a little more detailed. I still think the art style is boring as sin, and they picked like the single-most boring example of a Mario area to show in that (admittingly tiny) snippet.

Look at the 2D segments of Sonic Generations. Nintendo could do something like that, if they wanted. They don't want to, because it wouldn't be as cheap and simple.

There's no reason this game couldn't be done on a tablet where it belongs and would do far better business than Wii U. It's a wonder Nintendo shareholders haven't forced Iwata out of the company yet.

A Nintendo game on a Nintendo console? The horror, Yamauchi will have Iwata flogged in the streets for this abomination.

URgh looks like the same old shit. Try something new Nintendo. How about a new fucking every generation or something.

Your body is not ready.

Have you played NSMB Wii? If you think that game would be playable on a tablet, you are a fool. Making it past the first world would be an exercise in frustration.

And I find it interesting that you think the shareholders would want Iwata out over this game. NSMB is a cash cow that sells like crazy, no matter what you think about it. I may not like the art style much but even i can see that keeping NSMB going is a very smart business move.

Leave it alone. He's either a dedicated troll or eight years old, it ain't worth it.

Hell, they can look at their own product

Sonic Generations turned out alright.

PacMan DX advanced PacMan via gameplay through new modes and the art style changed for the better.

Nintendo should really thing outside the box. How amazing would this be on Wii U?

Form over function? Style over Substance?

Design is about the balance of both. I am not saying you can't get a botanicula looking game with great control mechanics in a platformer but when playing platformers it is important that you are able to control the game in a way where it becomes second nature and the visual aspect should allow your brain eyes and ears to focus on those little nuances and making it a bit more artistically pleasing might take away from noticing those little nuances. Having to limit the visual aspect does nto dumb down the game but rather makes it more intuitive when playing these type of games.

I liked sackboy and the style of little big planet but it really needed to have a more seemless way of joining the gameplay mechanics to the visuals. Or making the gameplay mechanics the focus rather than the visuals and maybe the game would have been better received.

Complaining about the art style not changing much is no different than the complaints against CoD IMO. And just like CoD, why change? These games make millions.

That reminds me, with NSMB WiiU actually looking great, when I expected it to look shit, I can't wait to see how awesome all the other WiiU titles look. Not sure if I can handle Pikmin 3, or Retro's new title if they show it.

No, the last quality 2D Mario title was Yoshi Island and I haven't played one since then.

Well, the difference is that if this game was announced for ipad today, instead of Wii U, Nintendo stock would be up $15 right now in Tokyo, but I guess the "old guard" is more interested in keeping a cult than running a business that adapts to the times and generates long term profits.

Casuals aren't playing on Nintendo platforms en masse like they were with the previous NSMB, this is a different story.

I will play this and love it for the gameplay. But I think discussing that aspect is besides the point. If they're going to crank these out (two in one year), then at least differentiate a little bit.

The art style goes a long way towards showing a lack of effort. I don't think Nintendo should be given a pass on this when it's obvious they can do so much more, as they do on their other titles.

I don't even...

I think it's too early to be complaining. It's not like they're showing this game off. Showing it at all was kind of incidental. It was just serving as a means to explain whatever features they couldn't grab from the original launch video. Come E3 there could be an insane trailer showing crazy platforming and level design that looks really creative or it might look pretty uninspired. We just don't know.

Jesus Christ you guys are on your jobs today. Every single WiiU thread theres one of you talking nonsense. E3 is officially underway.

Nintendo's advantage is that they are both a hardware and a software company. Destroying that synergy will compromise their competitive advantages in the long run.

Further, chasing short-term gains will do the same thing.

People are really going to be able to just say this shit during E3?

I can't imagine how this week doesn't turn into a blood bath that makes the recent Bans in the Nintendo thread look like a walk in the park. Like seriously, some Epic Blood like shit. On both sides of course.

quick comparison, must stress Wii game is direct Feed from Dolphin, Ive reduced the size of both shots to try to level it out.

I wonder if the fact they showed that Mario footage in an indication that it is just a tech demo. I mean, are we supposed to believe that zombie game is real? The tweets did say no games until Tuesday. Then why show Mario?

The evidence is insurmountable. Are you fighting this? You knew New Super Mario Bros. Mii was a game from the very beginning. Everyone else did.

I can appreciate the better looking background.

But after New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros Wii, and New Super Mario Bros 2, I'm finding myself bored with this art style.

You know they were going to run it into ground.

Still makes me wonder if we'll ever get another Mario/Luigi 2D traditional platformer ever again.

If you want to do this properly, you should really try to take or find a Wii shot with similar dominant elements in it; pipes, piranha, Koopa Troops and coins; maybe those thin plaforms too. You might not be able to find them all in the same location, I will say.

Someone with the NSMB Wii level creator could probably whip up a level with the same structure, for comparison fun.

Backgrounds look a lot better but the actual characters on screen still seem uninteresting to me. Could they not be more stylized?

man those NSMBWii clouds were cheap as fuck. That detail alone makes the new one look so much more vibrant
