First look at the Poltergeist reboot

Who's playing Tangina?

Tangina is the soul of the franchise. It will determine the reboot's success.

Wonder if the new cast will also be cursed.

The original Poltergeist is the best Steven Spielberg directed feature film (YES it is directed by Steven Spielberg, not Tobe Hooper, despite what IMDB and the credits say). This looks like a hollow reboot. Those hands inside the TV screen are stupid. That clown looks stupid. I'll probably watch it anyway, because I'm part of the problem.

Not for nothing, but I kinda like the fact Sam Raimi got the guy who directed Monster House to do a Poltergeist remake.

And of course: I don't mind a remake this far removed from the original, especially considering the parade of shitfucked sequels (and the TV show) that continued immediately after that original.

I quite enjoyed the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, although it was stripped of gore and wasn't particularly scary. Freddie was more creepy in it though.
The new Freddy was the main reason I didn't like the reboot that much. The original Freddy was perfect.

The TV is too on-the-nose even in the original. The movie has a great slow burn in the first act as it teases what's actually going on in the house, if not for the very very first shot of ghosty ether drifting into a TV.

Keeping the imagery of the original, but trying to 'up' it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Apparently there's a whole box of clowns as well ...

wait- is the mom actress the Don Draper hippie love interest from Mad Men?
That woman bothered me. :/

Love the original. The opening of the suburban neighborhood, dads gathering together to watch football, kids riding their bikes and fucking around with RC cars, bad TV reception... takes me back to my childhood. :D
I also adore Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack.

What amazes me is, almost 33 years later, the amount of people I talk to that still think Spielberg solely directed this film. Poor Tobe Hooper. :p

I remember my parents telling me this movie was evil and spooky stuff happened to the little girl (Heather O'Rourke) who was in it. Didn't let that stop me from watching it every time it was on TV.

Unfortunately, I'm sure they'll manage to fuck this up like most remakes =/

He was an active participant and could realistically have been given co-director credits, but Hooper was still the director.

Only because of contractual rules. That movie has Spielberg's directing style written all over it.

Also, he looks like he's blocking out a shot here, otherwise known as directing:

I know I'm insane.... like some sort of Poltergeist 'truther'.

Of course, one of the fun side-benefits of this film getting remade is that there won't be a resultant three-decade long wrestling match over who actually directed the fuckin' thing.

Also, if you haven't watched Monster House in awhile, you should. That film had some really good set-pieces in it. Gil Kenan managed to get some pretty decent thrills into that kids movie. (plus Dan Harmon & Rob Schrab on the screenplay)

So, looking at the cast - Sam Rockwell & Rosemarie DeWitt are pretty good picks. I don't know if Jared Harris is going to be playing the Zelda analog, or the realtor Sam Rockwell works for. I dunno. That's a pretty solid trio of leads already.

Yeah, you can't beat that this was basically a Spielberg film. Technically he wasn't the director, but this has his pawprints all over it. I mean, this was his peak era, and also at the same time when ILM was the legendary ground-breaking SFX team no one could even touch. And now we're gonna remake it because... it's territory already walked upon.

If this is superior to the original, the entire species of Man can eat its collective hat.

Yeah why the heck does it have teeth? It made a little more sense in the original when kids had hand-me-down toys from the age of Everything is Creepy, but why would a modern child have that God-forsaken thing in their room?...

Hey, the original had teeth, too.

The original on Blu-Ray looks damn good still. Music was brilliant too.

Yea, it looks super on blu-ray and I just love the practical effects. That ghost monster thing looks neat and I love the first time you see a ghost in the movie (going down the steps). Great music, effects and all around great movie.

ok..that one scene with the guy ripping his face looks funky but I still dig it. Yea, fuck that clown.

It's a shame there is still no proper high-def version of the original. I tried watching the blu-ray and when that editing error reared its ugly head I just stopped the movie.

I know, that's why I pointed out that it made more sense for a kid in the 80s to have a creepy-ass hand-me-down clown than for a kid in 2015 to have one.

Editing error?

Oh shit they're remaking Gremlins?
It'll all be CG and it'll be shit. :<
I love Gizmo.

Also it's going to be weird where we're going to be coming into a series of films released where beyond a certain generation, the most exposure kids have probably had to these films is like 30 second references on Family Guy...
