I'd think so, too - and honestly, CES isn't looking like such a hot place to grab headlines this year (or any year, really), what with practically every consumer electronics company planning to announce their 'iPad killers.' There's too much competition for the attention of the press. I don't know if a good venue for Sony exists at this point, though.

They need to announce something soon. They need something to swing the pendulum of hype back to their court (although, I think it might be too late .. ). The PSP boom in Japan certainly delayed the announcements as they are not going to jeopardize sales this holiday season. Hopefully we'll hear something in January.

I think Sony should announce it at E3. Make it the star of the show and it'll get a lot of exposure. Unless Nintendo rolls out their new console this year but I'm starting to doubt that. Sony could be the only one with new hardware because Microsoft will focus on the second wave of Kinect software and Gears of War 3.

PlayStation Home on PSP2 shouldn't be out of the question, if there is an optional persistent internet connection.

It can't be two different "Home" versions though. One for PS3 and another for PSP2. A scaled down "Home" where PSP2 and PS3 user interact would be cool.

They can still show lots of software at E3. They don't care about being showsy with new hardware, when their competitor can make lots of money because it looks like they have nothing coming.

At least I think it would be very stupid of them.

I don't think it's a case of CES or bust. As long as they announced it in the first 2 or 3 months, preferably before 3DS's launch, then it would still be on track vs prior expectations. If there's no suitable scheduled event in that period they can always pull together one of their own in Tokyo in that period.

I'm not saying that CES is the only opportunity Sony has, just that I get the sense that there should be rumblings of more concrete news coming in the very near future and I'm not hearing any. We shall see.

Yeah, it needs to be the full Home. It shouldn't be too difficult. Every space has a memory budget and given that the PSP2 looks like it will have more RAM than the PS3, and as Home isn't that graphically intensive (smaller screen on PSP2 anyway), I think it could be a big success, particularly in Japan.

Sure. I think once we get over the holidays things will start to flow a bit more steadily. That is, assuming the machine is coming out next year...

Also, I don't think that GDC session really would be relevant, looking at the full description - it's about hooking your games into various social networking platforms etc. Like youtube uploading, screenshots, 'sharing' your game out over the web and so on. I guess LBP2 might be a case study there.

Traditional AAAgames have a high purchase cost, and consumers rely on official websites, demos and press to aid purchasing decisions. In contrast, casual & mobile games increasingly leverage social networks and freemium business models to drive growth.

Every game creates user generated content which can be surfaced through varying channels, all of which have the potential to turn players into powerful advocates for your game.

This session explores how current & emerging social and casual gaming mechanisms can be exploited by game franchises on a range of platforms, utilizing social networks to drive repeat play and sales.

I think a formal announcement will do diddly squat. The negative connotations of the PSP are gonna make it hard for the mainstream to be excited about it, especially if there's no it software. And it'll probably be sandwiched between the second wave of 3DS games. They need to show it before that and keep the hype going. They need to get it out as soon as posible and with a great line up.

"The very near future" should equal "the end of January" unless Sony is run by morons

would be great to see, had always hoped (at the beginning of the psp life anyways) that they'd launch something like this

outside of having the money to buy a new device. I just cant justify a handheld gaming device. i'm down to just a phone now. now mp3s/movies + phone + games = iPhone 4 all on one device. i dont miss my psp.

I would consider leaving the iphone for the android playstation phone as its a swap, one device for one device.. but to add another device to carry i just cant due. maybe i'm just getting old.

So they're going for super max power again???dont think that's gonna be good for battery....have they learned anything from previous psps???

What is the current stigma with the PSP brand?

there is a definite stigma against the PSP brand.unfortunately a lot of the hate comes from videogame forums such as these

if a persona 3 remake, valkyria chronicles sequel or high quality mgs game was announced exclusive to the wii or PS3 then the usual suspects would be jizzing buckets. but because it's on the PSP no-one mentions it

Phil Harrison demoed a PS Home version on cellphone before. It may be a separate interface for the same world.

Well, the latest rumor is that the SE PS Phone will not be revealed at CES. Maybe to give the spotlight to the PSP2?

It looks like the photos might have been taken from a distance with a camera phone with high ISO settings. Then they have just cropped out the part with the PSP. So it might be a 100% crop which could explain the shitty quality.

I wonder how good the battery life will be on this device considering it is essentially powering half a PS3 according to the article.

i dont see why sce should give any thought to the xperia fun. that shit's irrelevant

Seriously, that thing seems to be nothing more than an Android phone with buttons for gaming. No one will care about that anyway.

I'd say that bad press and its persistent hatred are only part of the problem. If Sony had marketed itself in the west half as aggressively as it does in Japan I'd bet it would pay off in dividends. As it stands right now though its got an awesome library spanning across plenty of genres, and yet this meme of "all psp has going for it is Monster Hunter" still persists. All because Sony really isn't showing what the psp's got to western audiences.

If Sony wants to change this it needs to use the PSP2 rebrand itself or else it really could be "Dead on arrival".

That and a reasonable price on release sure couldn't hurt.

hmm .. you sure or wasn't that just him sending a pic from his cellphone to be displayed in HOME?

All this talk of Xperia/PS Phone is killing me softly. Just announce the damn PSP2 already so I can start allocating my hardware budget for 2011.

But it could be like 'Hey, we are revealing our PSPhone at CES (too)'. 'The f*** you are!'. :lol

Oh, that's likely BS (it would be more powerful than the 360's).

Obviously it wouldn't, but it would look pretty damn good because it doesn't have to display graphics that are 720p.

I am in the same boat. I want to decide which hardware I'll get firs tin 2011. The 3DS cards are mostly open, but Sony still has to blow the lit off.

Hirai talked about the PSP2, not really anything new but basically confirms a lot of speculation:

And although he acknowledged the popularity of casual games on smartphones, he said Sony would continue to appeal to a different genre of fans, those who appreciate the generally deeper, more sophisticated game play of conventional console titles.

So how will Sony wow gamers on the go?

New controls, for one thing, Mr. Hirai suggested, in nod by Sony to the success of touch-pad-controlled games played on Nintendo’s DS handheld and the iPhone.

‘‘Depending on the game, there are ones where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel,’’ Mr. Hirai said. ‘‘But you can definitely play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads. I think there could be games where you’re able to use both in combination.’’

And on the Playstation phone :lol :
‘‘We don’t want gamers to be asking, what’s the difference between that and a PSP,’’ Mr. Hirai said. ‘‘We have to come up with a message that users will understand. It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation’s strengths intact.’’

That pretty much seals the deal for the PS Phone :lol which won't even carry the Playstation name or anything Playstation expect for the controls.

About PSP 2 the comments seem to confirm that the system will feature both multi touch controls and traditional controls with analog sticks. Basically all the leaks so far are true.
It seems they plan to appeal to the casual/Ipad/Iphone crowd with touch-only games (the new Minis?) and to their traditional fanbase with a combination of traditional controls and touch controls.

I want something like this:
Multitouch screen
Dual analogs (better than the crappy nub)
Tilt (accelerometer)
Camera(s)
L2/R2 buttons (obviously can't have it like PS2 controller, have it like Wii Classic Controller)
Mic
Good web browser
Online as good as PS3 (friendlist, invites, chat and etc)

I don't care about all the negative thoughts on it.
I love my psp. I'm buying it.

I've been wanting to incorporate mobile gaming with at-home gaming for a LONG time.
Being able to have a rich cinematic experience on your home console and take part of that with you on the go will be great, even if its just grinding through stuff that will reward you in your at-home game.
I play my psp in spurts, so something like this really appeals to me.

I think they're really miscalculating the market with the approach of the PSP2 (just based on rumored power and price). They need a respectably powerful but inexpensive handheld to compete with the 3DS and Iphone. Maybe they could do refreshes in the vein of the Iphone if they wanted (with lower graphics options for new games running on the older models) but they need a price that's acceptable to consumers, because between the Iphone and 3DS, consumers aren't exactly lacking choices (especially since the 3DS is Nintendo taking aim at the very same type of consumer that Sony is appealing to).

But I love the PSP, it has been my favorite handheld ever, so I will get a PSP2... unless the 3DS completely absorbs that sort of market offerings, as they are attempting to do.

What is the rumored PSP2 price?

There's no rumored price atm
And one of the launch titles is Riiiiiidge Raceeeer? Hehe :D

But i see, i guess that it is too early to know anything about the PSP2 price.

EDIT: But if Sony are able to price the PSP2 cheaper than the 3DS, then that could be interesting indeed.
