I'd think so, too - and honestly, CES isn't looking like such a hot place to grab headlines this year (or any year, really), what with practically every consumer electronics company planning to announce their 'iPad killers.' There's too much competition for the attention of the press. I don't know if a good venue for Sony exists at this point, though.

They need to announce something soon. They need something to swing the pendulum of hype back to their court (although, I think it might be too late .. ). The PSP boom in Japan certainly delayed the announcements as they are not going to jeopardize sales this holiday season. Hopefully we'll hear something in January.

I don't think it's a case of CES or bust. As long as they announced it in the first 2 or 3 months, preferably before 3DS's launch, then it would still be on track vs prior expectations. If there's no suitable scheduled event in that period they can always pull together one of their own in Tokyo in that period.

Yeah, it needs to be the full Home. It shouldn't be too difficult. Every space has a memory budget and given that the PSP2 looks like it will have more RAM than the PS3, and as Home isn't that graphically intensive (smaller screen on PSP2 anyway), I think it could be a big success, particularly in Japan.

Sure. I think once we get over the holidays things will start to flow a bit more steadily. That is, assuming the machine is coming out next year...

Also, I don't think that GDC session really would be relevant, looking at the full description - it's about hooking your games into various social networking platforms etc. Like youtube uploading, screenshots, 'sharing' your game out over the web and so on. I guess LBP2 might be a case study there.

I think a formal announcement will do diddly squat. The negative connotations of the PSP are gonna make it hard for the mainstream to be excited about it, especially if there's no it software. And it'll probably be sandwiched between the second wave of 3DS games. They need to show it before that and keep the hype going. They need to get it out as soon as posible and with a great line up.

outside of having the money to buy a new device. I just cant justify a handheld gaming device. i'm down to just a phone now. now mp3s/movies + phone + games = iPhone 4 all on one device. i dont miss my psp.

I'd say that bad press and its persistent hatred are only part of the problem. If Sony had marketed itself in the west half as aggressively as it does in Japan I'd bet it would pay off in dividends. As it stands right now though its got an awesome library spanning across plenty of genres, and yet this meme of "all psp has going for it is Monster Hunter" still persists. All because Sony really isn't showing what the psp's got to western audiences.

If Sony wants to change this it needs to use the PSP2 rebrand itself or else it really could be "Dead on arrival".

That and a reasonable price on release sure couldn't hurt.

I've been wanting to incorporate mobile gaming with at-home gaming for a LONG time.
Being able to have a rich cinematic experience on your home console and take part of that with you on the go will be great, even if its just grinding through stuff that will reward you in your at-home game.
I play my psp in spurts, so something like this really appeals to me.

They need a respectably powerful but inexpensive handheld to compete with the 3DS and Iphone. Maybe they could do refreshes in the vein of the Iphone if they wanted (with lower graphics options for new games running on the older models) but they need a price that's acceptable to consumers, because between the Iphone and 3DS, consumers aren't exactly lacking choices (especially since the 3DS is Nintendo taking aim at the very same type of consumer that Sony is appealing to).

But I love the PSP, it has been my favorite handheld ever, so I will get a PSP2... unless the 3DS completely absorbs that sort of market offerings, as they are attempting to do.
