March 17th is going to take forever. Still unknown how wide of a release this film will get in the states.
I'm holding my breath that it comes to my theater, otherwise I'm looking at a three hour drive to see this. I doubt it will get a very wide release considering Trainspotting is more of a cult film than something a lot of people are gonna rush out and see a sequel to.

I emailed a cultural center that's 2 hours away from me about screening the film in march. (they screen only limited release foreign films and or cult classics) and they said no because "the film will be getting a wide release". This contradicts some other places where i see it as a limited release.

My local theater doesn't know yet.

All we can do now is wait a few weeks. I may get lucky as a theater about 40 minutes away had Shin Godzilla recently.

Caught this today.

It's definitely good. Had a lot of fun with the film. But it certainly doesn't have the imaginative disorder of the first film. Where the first film feels like a painter throwing whatever surreal idea and bit of paint he has at the canvas in a euphoric frenzy of artistic verve, this film feels much more structured and deliberately paced. But as somebody said previously, it more naturally mirrors where these characters are now at, as opposed to their previously drug-induced rabidness.

It does lean heavily on the original, but more to naturally inform the present story and connection/dissolution between the characters. It's necessary as opposed to lazy nostalgia-mining.

It's not up there with Boyle's cream of the crop, but it holds its own place a good deal above the likes of Trance.

This echoes my thoughts. Trainspotting 2 is a slicker film in some ways - you can see Danny Boyle has settled into higher budget production. I don't think it was ever going to be as path breaking as the original, but it was a good film for fans. I wouldn't recommend watching it if you haven't watched the first really. While the first stands alone, this film requires viewers to watch the original to become invested in the characters. Which is absolutely not a bad thing, because the first film is a masterpiece.

I enjoyed the first half of the movie a lot, but the last act felt a bit sloppy. Because of that I left the theatre not as satisfied as I hoped. But it was a fun nostalgia trip.

Boyle is one hell of a director and he makes it work for the most part. All the actors are brilliant too (Jonny Lee Miller is so much better than he was 20 years ago). The script, however, rolls in nostalgia a little too much, and acknowledging it and making it a plot point doesn't really justify it.

A good, fun sequel, but the plot deserved a little more meat, seems to stop halfway to greatness.

3 weeks to go, still no US locations :(

Edit: im reading on the twitter the US limited release is March 24th now

Wide US release 31st

Re-watched it in cinemas today a month after initial release. Cinema is still packed. Record breaking here in Edinburgh / Scotland.

Loved it. Doesn't have the same manic energy as the first, but that's not a knock at all in this case. They smartly did not try and recapture that particular magic but instead focused on a feeling of reminiscence, on youth and friendships gone by, of sad regrets which linger in the background of your thoughts long after. Spud's story in particular was heartbreaking, but the one that really surprised me was Begbie's. Rober Carlyle was fucking brilliant (once again) in the role, but this time for really different reasons.

Just got back from it. As someone who has the first in his top 10 movies of all time, I'm overjoyed to say I wasn't disappointed. It wasn't "perfect" per se, but it was a finely crafted movie with a lot of heart.

We read the first book aloud in high school lit class, which is part of the reason Trainspotting is so dear to me. Yeah, my teacher was an Irish (not Scottish but close enough) badass. He smiled every time he read "dos cunt" out loud.

Get to finally see this tonight at my local tiny theater here in Oregon. They're only showing it for one week, and tonight's the last night.

Going to have to squeeze yet another showing of the original into sometime today. Been a few years since I last watched it.

Immediate Trainspotting 2 thoughts: Terrific fanservice of the characters we know and love, but a real mess of a movie. Great reflection on aging and moving on that really spoke to me, but the ending was shite.

Worthwhile, but not that good, proving Sick Boy's theory in the original movie 100% accurate.
