First Runescape 3 Screenshots

i was really hoping we'd have a full reset. the majority of players being fully maxed doesn't make for a very fun game, and i'm pretty up there as far as stats goes

will not come back if that's the case
That would piss a crap load of people off.

I took the game too seriously and made too many friends with it.
Some were good, most were bad.
I'm just glad I'm free of Runescape today...and replaced it with TF2...<_<

Ah nice, I wanted it the year it came out, so for an entire year I power farmed before the GE was released getting seeds from random players while Law Running....Good times...

Also, wasn't anyone else mad when they made the combat more like WoW or am I the only one being purist?
That's really the driving force that caused me to leave. (I know old Runescape is back but I can't seem to get back to it since as i said before it feels like a time waste now that I'm older)

I stopped playing around the new combat time. I played for nostalgia and it was too large of a change. It's a better system though. I keep up with the news but that's about it besides playing a week or two here and there.

Looks quite good, considering it'll be a browser game. I do miss playing Runescape, though when I last tried (after the combat and microtransaction update), I felt a little put off of the whole thing. It lacked the hook of simplicity.

I think most people's exposure to the game was Runescape 2 (original version was rebranded as Runescape Classic).

Runescape 2 didn't even come out until 2004.

The peak of Runescape exposure was definitely 2001-2002. It seemed like everyone I knew played the thing.

Looks very solid. Can't believe I started this game almost ten years ago, and almost eight since I left. Ah, memories.

i realize it now that i know it is just an update. i thought it was a legit sequel.

jagex is pretty screwed. should've been bought out by someone larger or something. they can't afford to piss off their current subscription base, nor can they try to reboot and make something that can be as large as it was back in the day. they're stuck to perpetually updating a shrinking player base for eternity.

I wish Runescape looked like this when I played it all those years ago, though I had fun with what I had back then. Probably not enough will in me to try again even with this nice update.

It's still weird seeing the game be fully textured. I always did like the clay inspired art direction, though, holds up nicely even at low poly counts. Nice to see that they've kept iterating on that.

I haven't played this in a few years. It seems to have gotten far to complicated in recent years and feels somewhat daunting to go back to. Far too many new armour sets, shields weapons etc. I wouldn't have a clue where to start! Back when I played God armour and weapons were to best, now there seems to be a hundred different variants. And all this without touching the new skills and areas!

Has anyone gone back to it recently and can give their opinions on how they're adjusting to the changes?

I've never stopped playing long enough to give the opinion you're looking for, but the armor situation was complicated further in a patch last month. Now the "best" is dependent on what you're doing and really wont matter since the best gear costs hundreds of millions of gp.

The best thing is to look up what it is you're trying to do, find out what gear is recommended for that, and downgrading where you can't afford what it recommends or don't have the skills.

Or PM me and I'll help you out. Having a melee set, range set, and magic set is pretty important if you're going to be monster slaying in the new combat. Creatures have weaknesses now and it is very useful to know what they are and use the right gear.

First mmo I played , the 2004 version.

I thought all mmos would be like that.

The quests were each a storyline with a new area , you went into the unknown (a LOT of people would die and lose their items on the harder quests on the first day) and there was a real sense of adventure and danger.

Free for all full loot pking

Everything player crafted.

Thrill of the hunt and the chase in the pvp.

It may have been a simple game but at least it was something more than kill ten boars and it had a sense of adventure and danger.

Ooooh, this precisely.

Ah, my childhood... This really takes me back, and I'm only in my early twenties. I have (mostly) fond memories of nostalgia of my first MMO. Everyone used to play that game religiously back then in what must have been more than a decade ago. It blows my mind that there are still a lot of people playing it to this day.

Looks freaking good.

I wonder how awesome my Agility Cape looks on that.

I wonder how much awesome Saradomin Armor looks on that...

Actually looks really good but I stopped playing in like 2005-2006 and won't be picking it up again, but I still log in every 6 months-1 year just to check it out.

This. Runescape 2 was my first MMO and the only fantasy MMORPG I played a lot and actually liked. I was in fourth grade when I started playing it, and pretty much everyone else in my school played it too.

I completed all the quests, which were pretty good actually, I never became a member. We called it membu.

And I remember the last free quest being huge and awesome. You had to make a boat and sail to this island to kill a dragon, after which one NPC would sell you Rune quality items.

Elvarg, she's still there. :)

My most recent awesome quest memory is from the very end of "The World Wakes". This piece plays at the end in a sad scene, was a really nice way to end the quest, and also tease a lot of the future of RS lore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2punqm0OBkk

Though I've finished all but one quest and they are all unique unlike any other MMO's quests.

This is the scene if you don't actually care about spoilers in RS and want to see how the end plays out.

The quests were amazing.

Easily one of the best things about the game. While every other MMO has shitty fetch quests, RS had great story based quests.

I'm glad most MMOs are dying. It's deserved with all the shitty writing and quests.

I just went ahead and checked out current Runescape, and well, to put it the best way I feel I can;

There were cutscenes.

God this brings back memories. Me and a buddy used to play MMOs together all the time and the game we spent a good chunk of time on (before WoW) was Shadowbane. I could always tell when his mom cancelled his subscription because he would start playing Runescape instead.

Any word on if they're going to ditch click to move?

Only part of Runescape that I hated.

This has been asked a lot in this thread but not answered. I am curious about it as well. Click to move kills 90% of video games for me.

I'm not really interested in playing (just not what I am looking for from a MMO) but I'd totally mess around with it from time to time if it had some wasd movement.

They implemented wasd movement, didn't like it and didn't release it to the game. Game is 100% click to move.

So just to clarify from a relatively experienced player (from 09), Runescape '1' is what is now called Runescape Classic, and there are legacy servers available for it not connected to the main game. RS 2 was released in 2004 and was a major graphical overhaul, definitely better then any ps1 game. It was called RS2 for around 1 year to get the idea of the change across, after which it was branded just Runescape again. Then there was the Runescape HD in 2007 which got a more industrial looking and updates UI. Then came Evolution of Combat, a very unpopular but necessary update that finally balanced all combat (mostly) with a Gothart hotbar for abilities, dual wielding, real hybridding, but prompted mass support for Jagex to add RS 2006 servers like the current RSClassic servers, which they eventually did earlier this year following a petition. Right now the alpha of Runescape 3 and the beta of the New Interface system is going on, with the NIS being completely customizable on the fly, and rs3 having incredible draw distances, enough to see from city to city if you have enough elevation, and new graphics using HTML5.

Jesus, that sounds horrible! Slayer was always my favourite skill, think I was at 91. Always wanted to go back and try and get it to 99! Don't have time atm, but maybe in a year you'll get a PM from me asking for help! :P

Wow. The years have gone by. I remember when I was younger and everyone was playing this when it looked shitter (in terms of graphics). Look at it now.

I need to give it a try again, haven't played it in years.

Unbelievable. Usually old mmorpg's die...but runescape really has a good (cult?) following and with this graphics upgrade, the game will probably will even go bigger. I still remember Tibia mmo has some rivalry going on among the fans, but now they are pretty much left behind.

More people should try this game. It's f2p and membership is cheaper then other games. Jagex actually listen to the customers (sometimes) going out of their way to add the 2006 servers. The quests are actual quests.

The game gets a really bad rap but these days it's a completely different game.

It's really unlikely RS will ever get WASD movement without them having to change the way the whole game works. You move around on tiles, and rather large ones at that. Controlling that with WASD would be really unpractical.

Thankfully I got 99 slayer long before this EoC. I feel it would suck more these days.

I really don't play much anymore but generally I'll come in RS threads because people tend to assume the game hasn't changed in 8 years or something.

Also there is no wasd movement in beta, I'd like to try it as well.
