Flags from history

Some of them look like corporate logos from Cyberpunk or something.

Wipeout team logos!

I don't really know much about Franco's Spain, but from a design perspective its flag is like a supercharged version of the current flag:

Some cool flags here. Love the prefectural flags from Japan!

Also, this thread makes me think of Sheldon's Fun with Flags on Big Bang lol.

The Texas flag is alright:

But I would have much preferred if the Goliad Flag became the Official Flag of Texas:

Or the variation of the Goliad Flag, the Brown Flag:

Lone Star State or Bloody Arm State?

Flag of the Corsican Republic: A Testa Mora

The old symbol used to be blindfolded, but Pasquale Paoli lifted the blindfold from the eyes to the forehead when Corsica declared independence in 1755 to symbolize the liberation of the Corsican people.

The Corsican constitution was the first one to be based on Enlightenment principles, and it was the first nation to have female suffrage.

Nowadays it's used as a regional symbol in French-controlled Corsica, and also as a national symbol by Independence movements and political parties.

I'm always conflicted by the Torres Strait flag.

torres_strait_islanders_flag.jpg

I really like the symbolism of it:

The green panels at the top and the bottom of the flag symbolise the land, while the blue panel in the centre represents the waters of the Torres Strait. The thin black stripes between the green and blue panels signify the Torres Strait Islanders themselves. The white five-pointed star at the centre of the flag represents the five major island groups, and the white dhari (dancer's headdress) around it also symbolises the Torres Strait Islands people. White symbolises peace, while the star is a symbol for navigation

But all I can ever see is someone bending over and pointing their browneye at me.

Well erm, the Nazi Germany flag is a hugely effective piece of design. Fascists make good flags I guess.

Yeah that's Hyrule right there. Know which prefecture/family?

The crest is from the Hojo family, which was extremely influential in Japanese history in controlling the ... Bakufu through regents. It looks like the crest appears in the Kanagawa prefecture, near Tokyo. I'm guessing the fact that it looks like the Triforce is no small coincidence.

So I was reading up about Georgia and came across its old Soviet flag

After Soviet rule, the first independent Georgian flag is interesting too:

The black actually symbolises the overbearing Russian presence and the white is that of hope which is to bring about the good times represented by the wine red.

The North American Vexillological Association's 2001 State/Provincial Flag Survey

In 2001, the North American Vexillological Association conducted a poll on its website, asking its members and the public their opinions of flag designs in the U.S. and Canada.

Responses came in from 100 NAVA members and over 300 members of the public in 20 countries. Participants rated 72 flags on their design qualities (rather than on political, historical, or geographic considerations) on a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 was the best score. They were asked to rely on their personal sense of good flag design in rating the flags, which appeared on the web page. They cast well over 29,000 individual votes.

My favorite is this flag of the House of Welf as Kings of Hannover

logo_Welfenbund.jpg

so classy

It consists of beams in "Welfengelb" the yellow that is the color of the House of Welf, a victory wreath of oak leaves as an ancient Germanic symbol of strength and the crowned crest of Lower Saxony depicting the Saxon Steed.

South Carolina's state flag looks like a t-shirt that would be worn by a frail bearded hipster smoking outside a lame bar.

Lots of cool flags in here... I like unique ones with character. The American Indian one is pretty damn clever. That Toronto flag looks great as well, haters get out.

I love them, but to me they seem almost too modern... like the flags of some dystopian future society.

These are awesome... real life WipEout teams!

...oh shit, beaten :(

My favourite's always been the old royal standard of England. Doesn't get more quintessentially medieval than this:

Of course, much like the Roman ones posted earlier, it wasn't really a flag.

It's such bullshit that Ohio's isn't in the top 10. Fuck rectangles.

I'm biased, but I think our flag (or burgee, to be exact) is better than Texas' flag. Puerto Rico's too.
