Flower (PSN)

I think I'm in love.

The game is-- no, it isn't a game, it's really close to art. I'm experiencing mental soothing and after a long day at work, I'm completly relaxed.

And it also isn't that hard, if you're a trophy whore (like me). On my whole playthrough I got 14 secret flowers (apart from the last four ones), but now I'm watching the screensaver and seeing where the other secret flowers are :D

This game is really amazing. The controls, the already mentioned screensaver, the graphics, and the last levels were godly.

Everyone who has some cash for a game and has a PS3 should get this. Even if you'll play it once and then forget about it. It's wonderful.

I played the Eden demo for like 5 hours before the game locked me out and politely asked to purchase.

For a Flower demo, they could let you play the first 1 or 2 levels and lock you out after a certain amount of time, like, "OK. You know you like this shit now just give us your money already."

Sony's position is that they leave it up to the publisher. As stated a few times, creating a demo isnt just cutting and pasting, and takes time and money away from the actual game.

That wouldn't really work with Flower because it's a very short game that you can finish in just a couple of hours, and the entire thing builds up to something. A single level alone is already 1/6th of the entire game.

Eden also works more easily when it comes to playing levels individually, while with Flower it's generally a good idea (IMO) to play the levels consecutively for maximum effect. Especially the final two levels, which you definitely shouldn't take a break between. One of the biggest reasons the final level is so awesome is the huge contrast it offers from the level before it. None of this is anything anyone will be able to see from a demo.

Sixaxis. Game LOOKS good, but I'm not sold on the controls, so I'll wait for a demo, or never purchase it.

The motion controls are the whole point. It would lose a great deal with analog stick control.
 
Made it through the first level and i really love the game so far. The game achieved what i was looking for. A interesting, unique relaxing game that infuses a vibe of wonder, and love of nature.

I love pulling off those okami like moments :D

And the sixaxis controlls work. Anyone hesitant because of that, don't be, thatgamecompany knows how to do motion controls very well.

I know motion controls are the whole point. What I meant is that I've hated every single gimmick ever implemented with Sixaxis, turn it off in every game I can, ect. That's why I want a demo, even if it is only a 5 mins loop or something.

I agree that they usually don't work well, but thatgamecompany knows what they're doing. Soon after trying Flower, actually, I posted about how puzzling it is that they can get sixaxis motion controls so right when much larger devs have such a problem implementing them.

If you ever play Flower, you'll think to yourself "I don't know why I ever wanted analog control in the first place."

Trust.
 
I've never seen better motion controls than this game. I'm one of those people who turns them off if I have an option to, but they work great in this game.

Flying up into the air and then coming down in another direction is bliss. I spent a good amount of time just flying real high up into the air, looking around, and then came shooting back down. Love this game.

I don’t think that is totally true. Well not for the third level.

I was able to go back all the way back to the beginning of the level.
All you need to do is soar high above the canyon and fly back to the start of it and go through the other paths. Heck I even stopped mid way through the canyon flew up back and around to pick up some flowers I missed.

If the motion control is the only thing that is holding you back then really purchase it now and don't worry. I had zero problems with the controls and from the beginning it felt great.

I was even on the fence of buying flower and I'm really glad I just said to hell with it and bought it. Its a great experience.

As generally a huge opponent of waggle/Sixaxis, on top of which as someone who's wrists despise said controls as well, I agree 100%. They're perfect.

I'm sure that I tried to climb up and fly back but obviously I did something wrong.

That's my issue with these wishy washy folks. Normally I'd be all fine, you don't deserve it, carry on, but I'll be goddamned if TGC doesn't deserve every fucking dollar possible for this. They deserve it, and the market of people who admire things as amazing as this deserve to show that when it's done right we will buy it and rave over it and fap about it.
 
To be honest I'd like it if there was an option for regular controls, the motion stuff prevents me from kicking back and truly relax while playing this game.

Okay, before playing this, I wasn't thrilled with TGC and Flow. So I was unsure if Flower would deliver.

I played the first level only...

Wow!!! What did I just play? It's...OMG! Worth the money, get!

They finally made a game with a purpose and different levels. I didn't like how they did Flow.

When you're flying through the canyons, theres a point where you can go right and follow the path or go left and up into a crevice in the canyon wall and there is where the 3rd one is.

Especially considering the game is absolute masterpiece.
Me and my wife have been playing it all morning and were
in love. The game is such a complete joy to play.
 
Flower is awesome, worth more than what I payed, and I cannot sing the praises any louder. However, I am in agreement that the experience would be less frustrating and more relaxing if I were given the option to turn off the motion controls. To me, relaxing means laying back and being still while doing wonderful things on the screen. Here's an actual quote from my girlfriend.

"Damn this game really is relaxing. I gotta sit back."
*sits back*
*begins next level*
*sits forward*
"Ugh I can't really play sitting back"
I can understand specific moments where the SIXAXIS really shines for Flower, but in the end I think the overall experience of the game would be better off if it were somehow optional (even if you had to "beat the game" to unlock it.)

Is there a reason that you can't sit back with motion controls? I feel pretty used to doing that with the Wii now.

For me it's difficult to point the controller down correctly sitting back. I have to sit upright for this game. Annoys a bit. I really don't appreciate the forced motion controls, personally I don't think they add anything to the game.

The motion controls are what add that whole tactile element to it, though, so you feel like you're almost physically controlling the direction of the wind in the game. I think that's a big part of the experience. We're so used to analog sticks that it might be easier to control that way, sure, but nothing in the game really demands any sort of real precision. Pretty much any flower you miss you can go back and get if you really want, and it's usually not necessary to do so, so there's never any pressure. I certainly don't lean forward when I'm playing.

The PS3 controller does not afford ease of motion control usage when sitting back. These are human-computer-interaction terms I'm using. It is not immediately understandable to a human how to use the motion controls in the correct way while sitting back... this is why noticing what my girlfriend does is important, it's the same way a focus test works. Because she couldn't instantly figure out how to use the motion controls while sitting back, there is an inherent problem in the way something is designed.

Again, not trying to bash Flower in any way, it's too awesome to deserve it... I'm just a champion of giving the gamer more options, especially in this kind of case.

I was lying on my back playing this game. Tilting the controller got a little bit tiresome but only one button is needed so you can hold it with thumbs under. Relaxment fullfilled :)

The first levels are lovely and the last level proves it's a game. I wish there were more levels though.
 
Great game. I could do without the completionist design (missed a flower cluster? just let me move on)

in stage 5 should not be in there.

Complete one of the objectives on that level, you will then become a glowing petal trail.
Then take your glowing ass over to a pond! :lol

Ah, but they should be there, because that's part of what makes stage 6 so beautifully empowering.
