For the next Zelda game, let's avoid the Zelda Cycle

I've seen nothing but positive hype for this game.

I've heard nothing but amazingly positive things about this especially considering we knew almost nothing at all before today

Instead of being only positive or negative, let's allow different types of opinions that are well-argued rather than blatant statements only adding fuel to either side of the argument. This sounds much better.

As for the Zelda cycle, I have no idea how much truth there is to it. If it exists, couldn't it possibly be related to age? As in, younger people grow up with different Zelda games and thus have different personal values when it comes to them.

Obligatory;

There were already some people starting to complain how they missed the "dense overworld" from Skyward Sword in the VGA game demo thread

I honestly doubt anyone is going to pretend Skyward Sword is the best Zelda game ever released like what happened with Wind Waker and TP. (I really enjoyed SS but it was heavily flawed unfortunately).

And there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism anyway. Just because you don't have a glowing opinion of everything in a game doesn't mean you hate it.

Can't be worse than Skyward Sword, thank God we are getting back to semi-normal controllers.

I for one can't wait for Skyward Sword to be considered a classic and this new one to be considered complete shit. The I can't wait to consider the new one a classic and call the Zelda after that complete shit.

This is the Neogaf, 50% of the people that complain do not and will not own the games they complain about lol.

No chance of looking back at Skyward Sword with nostalgia.
Horrible controls, poor pacing, bad companion and collectathon questing. Horrible.

Complaining is what half of the people do here, they don't even play games, they just complain, sometimes about consoles and games they don't even own. They complain when a SH shows videos of a new game and they complain when they don't. Just look at the reaction post Sony key note.

They seem to be the majority because they spend their times shitting and crying over every little news instead of playing the games.

I hope it continues otherwise Skyward sword will never find a place in our hearts. It's like the fibonacchi sequence or something. Zelda will always be great as long as the cycle continues.

Zelda cycle doesn't exist. This ain't Sonic y'know.

There are valid complaints to each of the games, but even then most Zelda fans love the games being put out.

Also, the words "I wish it were like Skyward Sword" and " I wish it was like Twilight Princess" have never been spoken by anybody.

For the sake of my argument I'm ignoring the 4 people who hate every 3D Zelda game that has been put out.

That's going to be the main complaint. It's hard to believe, but Skyward Sword, with the densest overworld of any Zelda game, seems to be tailor made to continue the Zelda cycle.

I've already heard "Lol, the trees all look the same, muh immersion is broken" soooooo.....
Me? I don' care, I loved WindWaker when it came out, I loved Twilight Princess when it came out, I....tolerated Skyward Sword when it came out and this one has some pretty cool ideas so I'll probably love it as well.

I hope we can too, but I'm not sure it's gonna happen. I already have seen tons of people complaining about the overworld, textures, what have you. All of the sudden Skyward Sword is one of the best Zelda games, when I clearly remember hearing nothing but bitching about it not six months ago.

It's already happening, you've just gotta learn to ignore it and enjoy what you want to enjoy.

The zelda games are so different from each other, with so many big and small love-it-or-hate-it elements, that people preferring various other entries is not only plausible, but inevitable.

I can tell you right now that a lot of people are gonna love the new Zelda. And a lot of people aren't. And a lot of people are gonna be in-between at various shades on various things, from certain dungeons, to item usage, to sidequests, to the story, to the fuckin' text speed.

You should prepare yourself for this, as they call these things "opinions", and everyone has one.

This zelda cycle thing looks like a good case of confirmation bias, doesn't it?

You see maybe 2 people complain about the WiiU title and then they may say Skward sword is better and then you're like "YEP! See zelda cycle right there!". Ignoring all the other people that will love Zelda WiiU and may or may not have hated Skyward Sword.

We have seen very little of Zelda on Wii U, let's be positive and spread the hype instead of complaining.
I actually prefer the middle ground!

Seriously, getting yourself overly hyped up can be a key factor for why installments in anything let you down, trying to keep yourself calm and judge a game by its own merits is more likely to lead you to being happy with the game, rather than being let down. Going in really negative COULD possibly give you the highest high, but you might also just get yourself so worked up into hating something you'll hate it anyway.

At any rate I like what I see so far, though I am nitpicky about Link being right handed (there better be a good twist, whether it's support for Wii Remote or that isn't really Link one way or another) and am vaguely worried about the "smart" Epona controls, but as long as that doesn't really apply to how Link controls and is more "yes, you ARE riding a creature with its own mind" then it'll be fine. I'd just rather they didn't go Assassin's Creed with the controls and make me feel kind of detached from my character. Or that he'll do stupid shit that feels more like the game's fault than my own.

I don't anticipate anyone playing the new open world game and longing for the days of linearity, hyper-formulaic design, and wii motion controls. I'm sorry, I simply don't see it.

I'm not sure if anyone takes it dead seriously. It's just an amusing pattern. Of course it can be explained by the fact that any big change is going to have people that like it and people preferred the old way. And people who just don't like any change until they've had some time to get used to it (by far the biggest group).

The "Zelda Cycle" frustrates me in its implication that the Zelda fanbase is a hivemind that bitches just for the sake of bitching. I'm honestly a little shocked people still believe in it, and even more so that Bill Trinen made Nintendo's Japanese management aware of it.

This is a good way of looking at things. Keep your expectations in check.

I liked almost every Zelda title on release so I'm not going to worry or hype too much and just let it wash all over me on release.
