Forza Horizon 3 – PC vs. Xbox One Graphics Comparison

Looks great, but what can I expect with a R9290X and an FX8370 processor? Only looking for 1080/60 and looking better than Xbone.

Easy enough for a 60fps lock but don't forget the Xbox version already looks fantastic.
Have you tried Apex? I have R9-290X & FX8350 @ 4.4 WITH 16GB and Apex has always ran perfectly smooth on ultra at 1080p.

Awesome! Thanks!

Does the HDR mode makes it look very different from the non HDR?

I explained that in a few posts here. Different enough that I spent 3 hours thinking my footage was off then I realized I was just accustomed to the friggen HDR.
And FYI I should know better. I am working with some peeps on games that haven't even been announced or announced as having HDR yet. And it totally bamboozled me.

It becomes a matter of long term perception and getting used to it then going back is just flat out odd.

Wow thanks bud, you sold me, I'm buying the game. Saw your response on the other thread, thanks again!

Well if the difference is that little it shows that you may as well save 1000 bucks/euros and get the Xbox version. With the money you save you can also get a bunch of other amazing games that look just as good as if you were playing them on PC. I've played FH3 on Xbox One and it is stunning. So, I've pocketed about a grand. There.

Why can't I play this on Windows 8, sigh....

Upgrade. 10 is better anyway.

Well, a lot of people have both already. I'd rather play it on my PC at 21:9. More immersive. But I'll play the Xbone version too.

Also, people talk about PC's like they're just another type of console. Yes, they cost a lot more, but they do a lot more. My PC is also my work station. My consoles sit by the TV. So it's not like it's pointless to own both.

That and you get HDR on the One S. Hopefully devs will also patch for pc. Rise of tombraiser pc still doesn't have hdr...sigh.

Exactly. Who are these crazy people wasting thousands of dollars on PC hardware?

From the other PC videos posted here, 60fps looks too fake and gamey. I much rather prefer the smooth cinematic 30 with motion blur.

I don't know if you are serious but I feel the same way to some extend. When I first saw 60FPS gameplay on Gamersyde, the first thing that came to mind was the soap opera effect. But with motion blur it will probably be better.

(And I have a pretty good rig)

God dammit.

It looks clean as hell. But man, it looks kinda ..lifeless?
Everything just looks so flat.

I don't think that'll be much of an issue irl. I get what you're saying, everything looks like clay, but that's because YouTube 1080p sucks ass. You can't resolve any of the detail that was there because the motion blur and awful YT bitrate combine to smear the living shit out of the image. I think that people should upload 4K on YouTube when they've got high-res video like this, and even when they have 1080p video, so they can take advantage of the higher bitrate.

I don't get the soap opera effect necessarily, but motion blur goes a long way to hide the CGI nature of graphics.
It forces your eyes and brain to interpolate and add details that just aren't there.

Why this happens is also clear when using photo mode; when you want to trick people into thinking they're looking at a real picture, or take a good looking picture anyway, you need to hide the occasional lack of detail in the distance, either with DOF or MB, or both.

Clean 60fps look great, it also looks more clinical as in you can often make out single polys and individual pixels, which I'm usually not a fan of, depending on the aesthetics the game is going for.

Granted, 10 minutes at 60fps and it will be impossible to go back, regardless of what look you prefer.

Also, dying to see this in HDR. Which I won't anytime soon; malls here are so behind when it comes to demoing new stuff.

There's just very little going on visually. The model of the car looks great and the IQ is pristine but the environment is just a bit bland, almost sterile.

I guess this is the compromise that has to be made when designing an open-world racer. You simply can't put as much detail in as you would want.

To be fair he is driving in the outback section of the map. :)

He is driving in the most boring part of the map which is a desert. I mean how exciting can a desert be? You won't feel that way when you see the city, the coast and the forest.

This makes sense and i'd like to see footage of those areas. Still, I expected a bit more environmental effects to sell the image, even when it is in fact a desert.

Great on both.

Advantages on PC probably more on the fps side.

Standing still there's nothing to write home about.

Are you serious?

The car's 3D model is not even the same, there's a huge drop in quality in the model lol. Those wipers, dear god.

I would say that's a pretty basic difference in a racing game. :P

Yeah. I have the same problems with playing older games on high resolutions like Skyrim. On lower res the geometry gets "muddy" but all in all the picture is more coherent especially with details in the distance.

There's a pretty huge difference to me in the vs shots and videos I've seen.

PC has higher reflections, models, shadows, terrain detail, textures and all this at more than twice the framerate and higher resolutions and above.

The Xbox version is no slouch though but to say there's nothing to write home about. Cmon

I have same setup and can confirm Apex runs perfect although my load times are pretty long (most likely down to hard drive more than anything).

I hope i can get the same kind of performance out of Horizon although i dont expect to be able to run it at ultra.

Falling asleep just looking at it.
I was hoping it would be at least as cool as Driveclub but artisticly its not in the same league...

Than again, there is the open world...
Its just another ok looking open world racer.

Not impressed based on few youtube videos at least.
Gonna have to try the demo for sure before buying...

Yeah. I mean it's no Dirt Rally, that's for sure.

Another point for Forza Horizon 3 |OT| Graphics are meh

Sold. I have similar specs (overclocked 2500k @ 4.4 GHz and same GFX / RAM) and I run at 1080P, so I should be golden. I went from "I don't recall hearing about this" to "give it to me NOW" in like 10 hours for this game.

This makes sense and i'd like to see footage of those areas. Still, I expected a bit more environmental effects to sell the image, even when it is in fact a desert.

It's definitely not as dull and drab as Driveclub is at times, that's for sure.

Somewhat similar specs to me. I'm not too hopeful what I've seen thus far of being able to max this at 4K/60fps like I could Apex. I will try my best though!

My CPU is better and my 980Ti has an insane overclock so we will see. Graphically there isn't really anything more on screen at any one time than Apex so I thought it would have been close. I get between 80 and 120fps in Apex.

is that forced ultra, or dynamic ultra? If dynamic you'd think it'd scale back details to maintain the framerate, so maybe its fixed?

If so I should be good for 3440x1440 at 60fps on my GTX1080. Would have happily dropped to 30fps with good motion blur to keep the details up in a game like this (Heresy, I know)

I get similar performance in Apex but I wouldn't expect anything similar here. With Apex, developers have much more control over the rendering budget per scene. That's not the case with Horizon where you can go from a city environment to jungle to desert while crashing through fences, hitting other cars, etc.

There's a reason the traditional games are 60fps on the Xbox while the Horizon series has always been 30fps.

Ill be happy if I can hold a solid 60fps with max settings.

I'm not so sure.

With 4xMSAA + FXAA:

As I've said, this shot looks like a non-even non-filtered rescale of a higher resolution down to 1080p window. The one who took it should check his resolution settings and make sure that the game is actually running in display resolution first.

Such artifacts generally appear in UWP games when the resolution chosen in game's settings is higher than that of the display so the DWM has to downscale the buffer to the window size. I've seen very similar artifacting in GearsUE for example.

Aye but I'm confident that with some good optimization this could have run on such hardware at 4K/60fps. It's really nothing special graphically.

I will try the settings out though and see what happens. I may even settle for 4K/30fps with motion blur, because Horizon still plays and looks great at that framerate. Of course in Forza games the input polling and physics still update at 360fps, so it's still plays really well.

We shall see!

Is Apex suppose to be impressive looking? It didn't look very great to me.

I feel like 60 fps makes the visuals look oddly fake. Probably the soap opera effect like someone mentioned above because I was very impressed by the demo.

I get that from time to time with 60fps youtube videos, but it's a always and without question far suprerior within the game itself.

I will test it on my rig later. I have the same soap opera effect when I watch Overwatch videos on Youtube but when I play it in person, it's not there.
