Fox News: US athletes not "patriotic" enough

If our athletes aren't competing in red white and blue outfits with a rhinestone-studded eagle on the front and THESE COLORS DONT RUN embroidered on the butt while eating a McDonald's® Official Sponsor of the Olympic Games Cheeseburger and shouting REMEMBER THE MAINE, well that just sends the wrong message to our kids.

Bwahahahha. This is so funny.

I believe they passed a bill to make sure our Olympic uniforms are created here. Not for the right reasons, but rather because its apparently unpatriotic to create them outside the states.

Even though they refused to fund them and acted all surprised when they went with the cheaper Chinese option.

is it sad that this is the first thing i thought too? :/

Because its true. You know they had that conversation before airing that bit. Just like conservatives consciously made the plan to call Obama a racist or reverse racist when he became president so that they wouldn't seem like racists themselves when criticizing him.

The best part about all of this is that the folks who believe in this patriotism horseshit and jerk off to the American flag, tend to be the biggest perpetrators when it comes to disrespecting it. With regard to this specific issue, I shall quote US Code Title 36, Chapter 10, Section 176j:

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

In effect, Fox News advocates disrespect for the American flag and in essence, disrespects the United States. But then, this is par for the course for the network as it is. They aren't interested in glorifying the United States so much as they are glorifying themselves.

REBECCA SONI, GOLD MEDALIST AND PRIDE OF THE NATION

NOT MURICAN ENOUGH, MUST BE A COMMIE.

The only thing more horrifying than Americans are their constant threats about moving to canada. If Americans move to canada, I'm moving to Somalia.

'Soft Anti-Americanism'. Christ.

C'mon, you know it's true. The US Olympic Team is waging a war against America by winning medals in unpatriotic outfits.

Just disgraceful, picking and choosing which parts of US law apply to them based on what fits their opinion...what, do they think it's Leviticus?

I like how they got a black conservative tea party goon in order to criticize the first black gymnast gold medalist so that they can claim they are not racist.

I don't know how these people can even look at themselves in the mirror. The "code word" they are using in this case is so obvious they had to bring him on to compensate for it.

Well then, let them compete in the next Hunger Games. That will teach them to appreciate the land of their birth....?

Fox is what it is.

Fox is a channel for old people to watch and say "These young people today . . . what's wrong with them. The world is going to hell in a handbasket." Old people love that message that they want to hear so they all watch it. That is the whole point of their existence.

There were people actually wondering where her dad was as a "lol, black families" type of deal on twitter.

Is it just a coincidence Gabby Douglas is the one person singled out in the beginning to open way for a broader discussion? Any other news channel and I'd say so but with Fox and their racist/bigoted friends, I can't be sure.

More to the point, I find it despicable that they would berate the same athletes that are bringing in the medals. Fucking ingrates.

how does one become and independent Olympic athlete?

By belonging to a country that does not or no longer has a National Olympic Committee. The guys in the picture are all from the Netherlands Antilles, which no longer exists as of 2010. The flagbearer is just someone who works for an Olympic organisation. The other competitor (not pictured) is originally from what is now South Sudan (since 2011).

Derp. Nice strawman. Clearly not ONLY old people watch Fox News. But they do make up most of the audience. The median age of a Bill O'Reilly view is 71.

71?!! hot dayum. lol

still, it's quite clear that people of all ages watch Fox News. Unfortunately. You don't get to #1 by only attracting senior citizens.

Can you actively participate in it despite being from a country that is in the committee?

That's a long time of bigotry and stupidity to be disseminated. Bill O'Reilly comments about how tides can't be apparently scientifically explained ergo making it the work of god still makes me laugh and throw up.

Stupid people are not as harmful as stupid people with power and influence.

I'm not sure what you mean. Technically, athletes don't represent a country, they represent a NOC. That's also why you see some entities that are not sovereign countries (e.g. Palestine).

The Netherlands Antilles had a NOC, but the IOC disbanded it after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. I think this will be a one-off for them; in the future they will just represent the Netherlands (or maybe Aruba).

I'm very patriotic but the notion that these athletes aren't patriotic is ridiculous. Patriotism is not displayed by wearing American flag memorabilia (which, as was mentioned earlier, is actually something that you are not supposed to do). Wearing stars and stripes outfits is unnecessary because we never forget what country these people are competing for. Michael Phelps' name in results is always followed by the USA designated. Plus, like following a baseball or football team, people know who is on their favorite team. Patriotism comes from the fact that Americans are winning these events and being heralded as the best in the world at a particular thing. It is a testament to the United States that it is capable of creating an environment where someone can achieve such amazing things. This notion is present regardless of whether someone is wearing red/white/blue. Personally, I think the accomplishments of these athletes is a true demonstration of patriotism. Basing the notion of patriotism on clothing is shallow and cheapens the notion of being proud of your country.

Also, people should probably disregard fluff pieces from cable news channels in general.

What I meant is that can an athlete choose to associated with Independent Olympic Athletes even if the NOC (say Canada or Nigeria etc) can arrange for them to be represented under the athletes national flag?

No, don't think so. As said, it's the NOCs that organise a country's participation in the Olympics; only they decide who qualifies and such. An athlete can't just show up and participate.

In this case we just had a NOC that lost its country and a country that lost its NOC.

Hehe, I wish they could. LOL. Thank you.

You know what makes me feel patriotic? Whenever I see the American team and realize how diverse the country is. Everyone is represented... It's amazing.

Stars, stripes, and obnoxious design wouldn't inspire that feeling.
