Franchise you wish would go back to its roots

The way I see it, there are two directions that classic games can take.

Popularise them (dissilusion original fans).

Or keep it original (stagnation?).

Some of the most often mentioned games in this thread have gone the popularisation path.

Metroid for instance went 3D and left behind its classic gameplay. Bad for the fans, great for making money, and making new fans.

Castlevania. Went all anime and 'collect'em'up'. It used to be a spooky, atmospheric game. Now it's a cartoon. No doubt it's more popular. The anime concept is hugely popular. But the old fans are left wanting.

Look what happened to Ghosts n Goblins. They made Ultimate true to the original concept. The die hard GnG fans loved it (my favourite game released in 2006). But it sold horribly and got poor reviews.

So what should a dev choose to do? Make a game for the fans and risk stagnation of income? Or reinvent the series and make tonnes of cash, but disappoint the people who love the originals?

Is it possible to do both at once? Yeah, but it's rare. I'd say RE4 managed both at the same time. But then I was never a big RE fan so I could be wrong there (and about to get roasted by RE fans).

Insightful post. I'm personally a fan of the Mario/Mega Man method of sub-franchising/sub-series. Here are franchises that could use that sort of thing, and what kinds of games should be focused on:

Castlevania: Give us both the 2d Metroidvanias and old-school Rondo of Blood-type games. Moratorium on the 3d games until you figure it out.

Zelda: Continue with the top-down 2d and 3d style games, but revive the AoL-style sidescroller. (Anyone who says it's too similar to what Castlevania's been doing is sorely mistaken.)

Mega Man: More Legends/Tron Bonne style 3d games, please.

Metroid: Please, Nintendo, don't ditch the 2d format.

Phantasy Star: Make all the MMORPGs you want, but please, more traditional RPGs.

Metal Gear Solid: If you've got it in you, Kojima, more top-down action would be nice. Ghost Babel was fantastic.

One other franchise I forgot to mention as part of the general topic was Puyo Puyo/Pop. That one needs to be put back in the hands of the original Compile members who worked on it. I got a fevah, and the cure ain't Fever!

Castlevania-Get rid of "The Hack" (his name doesn't even deserve to be mentioned), bring back the pure action of the NES/SNES games.

Bomberman-back to old school multiplayer goodness. Stop trying to turn it into pokemon or megaman or whatever the **** else they've done to bomberman lately.

WWE games-AKI, you bastards. AKI!!

Sonic-nothing more really needs to be said.

Donkey Kong- I just want a true sequel to DK '94

Megaman-definately. Stop trying to turn it into an RPG. Stop trying to turn it into an anime.

Ok who the hell disses KOF when XI shows that it went back to the roots and pwns? Sure it might not be 98 or 96 but 98 is overrated.

i have no idea if its been mentioned or not, but the right answer is AMPED. comeone indie built, do another, dis time wit feewin

Hate to burst your bubble, but that studio shut its doors down months ago. It shall never happen. :/

yeah i know. i got news for you as well, this thread will not reverse the shithole path all these games have taken over the past few iterations :P

The PC version of Rainbow Six should be split off from its console counterparts back into a more pure tactical shooter (Open ended map design, less reliant on one way scripted sequences + enemy spawn/respawn points). There was just something so special about nailing the perfect plan and putting it all together in the classic R6 game.

While the console version can keep the more action oriented Bruckheimer produced like game.

Gah! Totally forgot!

Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter Vs. Games: Bring back the 2D fighter!

And anyone with the Marvel franchise, back to formulas and...

BRING BACK THE 2D FIGHTER!!!:D
There's this one idea for a game that I have where I thought about a 2D Naruto fighting game. Nothing fancy, nothing like the stuff that's out now, a 2D fighter with sprites that look like they came out of the anime, Street Fighter-like mechanics with Mortal Kombat-style finishing moves, is incredibly balanced for tournament play, and has online play. I'm just throwing this out. :D

Final Fantasy series

i missed the old days. Leveling up and class changes along with weapons and jobs too. Ahhh... the music << can't stress this enough!!! I understands how oldschooled FF games work and stuff.

Since i didn't have PS 1 at the time and i'm not sure how Final Fantasy 7 thru 9 play though. I'm hoping it's the same as oldschooled style like 1 thru 6 since it's in 3-D form.

do you mean you havent played FF7-9 yet?
Trust me, you will love those games. I seriously cant understand people who hate the Holy Three.

I would like to know what you think of them when you're finished. PM me or something then.

Baldur's Gate.

Oh good old RGP trend where art thou ?

Huh? We are talking about game series that need to go back to their roots. BG has only had two games, and they were pretty much the same.

Agreed with:

Mega Man
Star Fox
Sonic
Final Fantasy
Castlevania

And I would like to add Ridge Racer and Soul Edge, which I think has lost some gameplay in the road (Rage Racer + Type 4 FTW!; Soul Edge gameplay > Soul Calibur 1&2!)

Streetfighter.

But stylistically, total bunk. Most of the new characters are retarded Darkstalker imports, the music is terrible, the settings bland and unimaginative. Yeh the game looks real nice, but in a totally bland way.

What the **** you talking about? The music in this game is incredible you dancing would be you folding your arms and staying as still as a statue to not like any of the songs you obviously have no rhythm.

O yeah i like smash brothers as much as i like street fighter but take its frankfurter out of your mouth.

Another vote for Rayman, but going waaaay back. I only liked the first one, but it was great (tho extremely hard).

Let's have another one of those, please!

It's mainly that they didn't really hold a candle to the best of the SNES era.
