From Gawker:

The fifth season of Fred Armisen's hipster sketch show Portlandia premieres tonight, and if you spend enough time reading about the comedian online, you'll be left with two impressions: First, that he's funny and charming. And second, that his charm and humor mask something of a reputation. For what exactly depends on whom you ask, but here are some adjectives that have been used to describe him over the years: "womanizer," "sociopath," "traumatizing," and, from Armisen himself, "terrible."

"Looking back, I feel like I was really young, and at the time I didn't think that I was that young," Moss says. "It was extremely traumatic and awful and horrible."

"One of the greatest things I heard someone say about him is, 'He's so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person.' To me that sums it up.

And didn't he pump and dump that chick that impersonated Zoe Deschanel on SNL?

Met the guy as he filmed in my office for Season 4 of Portlandia... real chill dude and super funny. I can see like most comedians, he could be a bit of an iceberg.

I mean, he sounds like a bit of a dick but in the usual playboy type of way. Was expecting a lot worse from the title.

Comedians, for the most part, are not happy, well adjusted people. This is known.

If true, it's a shame. But not much of a surprise.

I'm no fan of Armisen - can't stomach him honestly - but almost all those quotes were from anonymous internet bloggers. There's quotes from Moss and Armisen himself and a painting but the rest is all anon. That's Gawker for you, I guess.

I'm confused that women find him attractive.
I get that he had status and is funny, but he never seemed like a looker to me.

Fred Armisen, Elisabeth Moss Marriage: Actor Admits He Was 'A Terrible Husband'

So, how did he get Moss to eventually give up on their marriage?

"You sort of withdraw and you sort of get into all the things that you think make you weird," Armisen explained of his technique, admitting that he "should go back to therapy." "Like, 'I'm really into playing XBox ... [or] my record collection.' You sort of disappear into the things that you think are your hobbies."

Videogames strike again! Another Hollywood romance in ruins over the lure of Mario Bros.!

p.s. I didn't know Elizabeth Moss was a Scientologist. That's rather disappointing.

Plus this is all super old. Slow Gawker day.

From the comments:

So in other words, there's no allegations at all of 1)physical abuse or 2)sexual coercion here, right? Like... why am I reading this? Are we really at the point now where "bad boyfriend" is a worthy news story? OK, fine: I won't date Fred Armisen! Why is it news, exactly, if celebrities use their celebrity to sleep with a lot of women, and aren't particularly nice about it?

People said this kind of stuff about Jian Ghomeshi for years too. I really hope Armisen isn't hiding a violent side.

He's also a lot funnier than Seth, and I think he'd be a better host for sure.

One can be ugly as sin and still drown in pussy/dick, nothing new about that. All it takes is to be famous and that's it. Having some charisma helps, too.

He comes off as a bit of a douche in his Narduar interview but he does get quite passionate about music and it feels like Narduar is egging him on a bit.

I've seen plenty of interviews where he seems like a normal, quiet dude.

First of all, an article based on gossip site commenters? Uh.....

Secondly, so he is someone who is uses his fame to sleep with lots of women? I don't see how that is newsworthy. I read all that and didn't see any abuse outside of just general loser celebrity sleeping around sort of behavior.

i've found the best way to corroborate anonymous online rumors about someone's relationship behavior is to ask their ex-wife.

I'm not sure about Fred and diseases, but I do know firsthand that he abuses his semi-celebrity status to meet women and then abruptly discards them (all the while playing the nice, sweet, down to earth role.) He's only interested in friending and/or dating celebrities. Between serious relationships, he seeks out "everyday girls" such as myself to mess with and ultimately sleep with (something he didn't get from me - I'm a bit too wise for you Fred, and you know that.) That Petra person should watch out. If - and I stress IF - someone more famous comes along, she'll be on the chopping block faster than Fred can get into his sell out black face. Despicable

everytime someone says the bold i rarely believe it lol

This just seems like a ridiculous article considering there wasn't an event or anything that sparked it.

I mean... there's tons of shitty people out there, many of which are comedians/celebs, why write this up about him?

i've found the best way to corroborate anonymous online rumors about someone's relationship behavior is to ask their ex-wife.

yeah. because ex-wives wouldn't have any form of bias

What is a normal person anyway? Comedy doesn't come from a "normal" place, you present an off kilter perspective of the norm and people laugh.

That's the joke.jpeg

Good sense of humour is the most frequent quality that women seek in a man, so I don't get the confusion. If the man is too good-looking, there might be insecurity with the woman and same goes for men ("why is he/she with me?").

I like him in Portlandia but he does come across in interviews as a bit of a jerk that loves sarcasm. Didn't really handle himself well during the Sunset Overdrive launch event (or whatever it was called).

p.s. I didn't know Elizabeth Moss was a Scientologist. That's rather disappointing.

As has been mentioned she's one by birth, considering how the church operates I would probably not want to rock the boat if I came to my senses as an adult or something, unless you want your family to get split up, or get death threats or whatever.

Well I am certainly going to judge Armisen off of an OP that I have on my ignore list, linking to Gawker. Give me a minute to get my note pad out so I can make sure I put this dude on my shit list. Fuck you Fred, I have it on poor authority that you are a cunt.

Pardon the bump, but this story was so memorable that when I heard he was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast last week I wondered if he would address it.

He did, actually, in great detail. He admitted it was all pretty much true, and that he has no sense of reality when it comes to intimacy. Like, once he's comes down from the initial buzz of a relationship he pretty much shuts off or self-destructs. The funny part is that Maron was pretty much like "Yeah, tell me bout it", ha. It was interesting hearing him talk about it, because from his partners' perspectives he could come across as pretty evil. Hearing him here, and in other things I've seen, he really does come off as a nice dude and sensitive to a lot of things, just has a wicked intimacy complex I guess.

Yeah, the title is kinda misleading.

In a world where wife-beaters, rapists and pedophiles can be famous and free, being a dick and a horrible partner isn't the worst thing he can do.

I've read the online dirt sheets that he's a womanizer and berates his lady friends until they feel bad about themselves. Most of these are from comments on other articles about him, but oddly, he seems to attract these kinds of comments where you don't hear that as much amongst other mildly popular comedians. Like, every post about Armisen online seems to have some mention about how he is a complete dirt bag to women he dates and takes advantage of them which while probably true of other mildly popular stars, it's not a reputation that follows them into every article.

Nice benchmark.

What is that supposed to mean? I am not saying he is a good person or anything (saying horrible things to your partner is horrible), but the title says it is his "dark side" implying something really bad. But it just sounds like he is a mean guy who can't handle a relationship.

That isn't someone I would hang around with, but being a dick isn't really "a dark side".

I've always hated him on SNL especially on Weekend Update and he always pinged me as swarthy even before all the Elisabeth Moss quotes. My favorite part of the article:

It's one person leaving every comment

Thanks for this. I'll look forward to checking that episode out.

Uh I don't think swarthy is the word you were looking for. Or maybe it is.

Gawker using internet gossip to make someone who is aware of their problem come off like an evil abuser.

Everyone can have trouble with relationships. Why is it news that a comedian does?

Dark side is a bit of a stretch. He sounds like a celebrity who sleeps with a lot of people and has commitment issues... Not the most unique thing in the world.
