<- Appreciation bump for "well done, jackson pollock" before going to bed, also so that any new comment by anyone else doesnt get buried on the last post of the last page.

I managed to listen to about ... 150-200 album/EP's today. I think I may have somewhat perfected my track skipping technique to see whats worthwhile and I STILL only got like 5 new good bands out of 5 hours searching. Somewhat depressing.

Holy crap. I feel like I'm not listening to enough of the bands that come through the readout.

Another 209 bands down, 6 of them worth something.
Yeah, boring weekend was boring, but hey 400 records checked. And I randomly found a radio play show I was laughing my ass off at.

Someone please listen to it and tell me whether I am just dead tired or whether this was seriously funny. I was laughing my ass off, but it might have been the time.

Found out earlier this week that cactus (indie game dev) has a band named Crystal Boys. Been listening to their first and only album Skeletons all week and loving it. It's pay what you want.

I remember playing his games. Music doesnt seem bad at all. Its amazing how many creative talented people arent even restricted to that one talent we know them for.
Anyway, thanks for the link. Will be listened to more thoroughly.

Eventually I'll just run out of things to say for post-rock reviews, but I can never have enough of the music

Lol, I know what you mean. Make sure to review lots of other stuff in between, so that you dont burn out on those reviews.

Wet Stallions have just released their 2nd album / EP called Wet Stallions II. Series of 3 they're doing. It's instrumental hip hop, but kind of classic sounding. All soul samples and analog synths. The first is short bursts of kind of more upbeat songs, but II is a bit more 'songy'. Great stuff. And it's all free / donation on bandcamp, links below.

That was actually more enjoyable than I might thought it would be. I think working on these reviews on all things that I can find broadened my genre "spectrum" a bit. Funny.

Edit: "Wet Stallions II" at least. The first one is still a bit over the top for me.

Edit2: listened to it again. Nice stuff. Got anything more in that direction? Can also be commercial, just want to check out more to get a better idea.

Another gem by Gabbo, absolutely great find:

Shadowboxer - Two Cities (EP, Female Lead Alternative Rock)

http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/2011/11/shadowboxer-two-cities-draft.html

I wouldnt necessarily compare her voice to Imogen Heap, though I know what you base that on. But, its a truly remarkable voice nonetheless. Great review as well. I'll inform them right away, they shouldnt be too mad about what you said in the review. ;)

Alright, I just noticed that they even mention Imogen Heap/Frou Frou themselves in the genre description. I guess they started out with a kind of different style of music maybe? They even have 2 earlier singles out on Bandcamp as well:

http://shadowboxer.co.uk/track/price-tag
http://shadowboxer.co.uk/album/time

I am actually glad they didnt put these onto the EP, as it wouldnt fit really with how the EP was set up and you realize very easily that especially the first song "Time" isnt on the same level as the other ones in terms of composition and production. "Price-Tag" is a solid song though, which also complements the Imogen Heap comparison a bit (if only in terms of the general style, rather than her voice). The songs on the EP are still quite a bit more interesting, but it might be worth checking out.

Inform them? *nervous* Oh god, oh god, oh god. Gotta fix my hair, tuck in my Tragically Hip tshirt so I look presentable....
But really, loved it. Of all the music I've been exposed to since coming on board with you Toma this would easily vie for top spot.

I thiink I have a post or two in the this thread. Just wanted to say thanks for digging to find this music. Glad to see more creative commons work. Cheers!

I assumed as much. Was your first 5* I believe. To which I dont really have an objection :)
I'll post my favorite one of the last 2 years later this month.

Thanks for the appreciation! We'll do our best digging up more. Its a bit time consuming so we aren't always on schedule but so far going along steadily :)

I've really enjoyed this, same with that Ektoise band on one of your older reviews. If you click that Imogen Heap tag at the bottom of the Shadowboxer page you get a lot of great bands with a similar sound. I didn't know that much about bandcamp until a few days ago but I'm quickly falling in love with it. Great blog, got a bookmark from me. Keep up the good work

Alright! I am presenting you an EP I'll probably have problems finding admirers for. I really, really like song 1 and 5, and am quite amazed at how easily he can pull of these kind of songs, with such a variety and even consistency. But no doubt that his voice is really, really off putting to most people.

Challenge! I bet I wont find a single person who likes these songs. Prove me wrong GAF.

pkthunder - 5 song EP
3802320010-1.jpg

http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/2011/12/pkthunder-2011-5-song-ep-for-free-indie.html

As already mentioned before, ratings arent necessarily the reviewers own opinion but rather recommendations for others, and I know that many people WILL get annoyed by his voice. This + the technical uncleanness lead to the 2/5 score. However, exactly THIS kind of musicians is what I made the blog for. Music that often times doesnt even get a chance. So there you go pkthunder, convince a few more people if you can while you have the chance.

This is my buddy Aidan's band :D

They're not earlier singles, they're 2 songs they did in a live session after they released the EP

New EP coming soon :D

Nice! We tried writing them a message on facebook but their page doesnt seem to be all that active. Would be awesome if you could forward the information about that message on the wall to them. And gabbo might get wet pants when he comes back hearing that a new EP is coming soon.

Great stuff! Keep going IamMikeside's buddy's band! We love your songs.

I liked/fan them on facebook, so I already knew about the new EP ;)
I'm going to give that pkthunder, 'you won't like this' ep a spin. see if I'm up to the challenge.
It turns out, I'm probably not. Only enjoyed one of the five ("These Are the Depths"), the vocals are just.... Yeah, the rough sound to the music added to its charm, but damn those vocals.

Told you. I am quite surprised I managed to like it this much though. Probably some sort of Stockholm syndrome from listening to it countless times on the go.

Set up iTunes to sort the bands I listen for reviewing and look at this:

CamRR.jpg

More than 50 hours of music that's already sorted out and needs to be shared with the world. Grah. I'll never be able to finish all of these.

I find it humorous I haven't seen any of the albums in that picture.

Some EP's that I already have since before you started using the program. But other than that, there is looooooots of music. Bandcamp has like 300 new entries every day. No wonder our "searches" get different results if we search at different times.

There is music that makes you fly.

I cant wait to finally publish the review about the next band. Sitting and daydreaming about it unfortunately doesnt get you anywhere. Grah. I havent had a band with such an impact on me in a long time, and its a wonderful feeling (actually almost worth a thread about these experiences). I should get it done within the next few minutes when I finally manage to write more and listen less.

http://www.triplejunearthed.com/

Not sure if it's been posted in here, but this is pretty much the biggest source of free legal indie music in Aus if anyones interested :)

Thanks! Sort of unfortunately I am already busy until the end of my days with scouring Bandcamp probably, but are there any bands you'd like to recommend specifically that I could check? Page looks awesome though, will try to have at least one scouring session there, see what I can find.

Okay, here it goes:

Magic Man - 2010 - Real Life Color (Indie Pop Electronica)
3575956778-1.jpg

http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/2011/12/magic-man-2010-real-life-color-for-free.html

This is... the album that probably managed to kick off the Postal Service album as my favorite album, the music style is somewhat comparable but a bit "softer".

One experience that will tie this album forever to me was a travel through germany earlier this year. I was visiting a friend on the other side of germany and when preparing for the travels back, I stood in the doorway in front of his house at 4 in the morning, everything black, quiet and no people. Rain suddenly starts falling slowly, and I put on my headphones and randomly the first song from a selection of 800+ songs "Nest" by Magic Man started playing, almost making me want to shout/sing along between the houses while running in the rain.

Super highly recommended. I love this album like no other currently and it makes me unbelievably happy listening to it.

They sound great, and they're local! Nice writeup about them. Do you know any other bands off hand in that style of music? Postal Service kinda stuff

Haven't given it too much time myself.

However they've just recently launched their all unearthed radio station

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/ available by clicking on the green listen live box!

just a bit of info too, JJJ is one of the biggest radio stations in Australia :)

That I do (having not listened to that band yet). Marumeth - The Sun Smiles
It's a little more instrumental than Postal Service, but I get that kind of vibe.
I hope to have a review written about them by the end of the week/weekend.

Woah guys, I just got contacted back from Magic Man and got to know that even them (definitely on the more popular side of bands we find) dont get enough encouragement and were too discouraged over the years to really pick up making new songs.

If you really enjoy small bands, let them know!

On the brighter side of things, they also mentioned that they are probably getting out 2 "dancey" singles beginning next year. Cant wait for it :)

Alight, our retrospective on the year 2011:

u0eD5.jpg

http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/2011/12/records-of-year-2011-editorial-picks.html

Just in case some of you havent checked every week for new reviews, the ones that impressed us the most. Hope you like them :)

Edit: Oops, sorry for the huge banner, forgot that the blog resizes pictures automatically.

Dude, a banner? F yeah!
Anyway, yeah I'm sure you've all read your fair share of best of's, so whats one more? Ours is short and to the point. You can get in and out and grab some excellent music in no time at all.

woop woop, more Shadowboxer love :D

I'd definitely be up for doing a few reviews if you want somebody else helping out, btw

Sure, getting more reviews done (and believe me, we'd have enough work for 10 new people writing a review every day), would always be great :)

I'll contact you via pm for some stuff.

Defs going to grab the ones I didn't already get.

If you havent checked yet, there are also Labels to the side, some of which list the best records we had so far.

Vinyls 4/5 : http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/search/label/Vinyls%3A%204%2F5
Vinyls 5/5 : http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/search/label/Vinyls%3A%205%2F5

Gabbo had an idea earlier to make it a little bit more... neat to look at, but I havent yet looked at the Blogger possibilities.

Took me only the whole day but I managed to make it look a bit nicer. Should be easier now for everyone to find what he is looking for. Any suggestions/ideas are welcome. Was thinking about a daily random album or something. Or a "Give me a random album from category xy"- button. No idea whether thats possible or not.

That is exactly how I pictured it (in the green we already had, no worries about that though).
Now to figure out what to do with that newly opened space.

Free live album by the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. They made one of the best albums of the year, give it a try :)

I didnt even know there was a genre called Darkjazz, but its intriguing. Feels like a movie soundtrack and pretty ambitious. Nice, will give it a closer listen later.

I wouldn't call it the genre, because it really hasn't much to do with jazz, but it's definetly a good word to describe the sound - there's even an alter-ego band with basically the same members called the Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation ;)

Another interesting find by Gabbo, Ambient Post Rock:

Shekinah - The Wind Lost Its Breath Redux

912439822-1.jpg

http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/2011/12/shekinah-2011-wind-lost-its-breath.html

Really digging what I heard so far, goes onto my mp3 player as well for a more in depth check.

I do believe this was referred to us by a GAFfer (Eltacoman), I'm glad he made us aware of it. Really good stuff. Instrumental [post-]rock is right up my alley.
Hope his friends keep on making and releasing music. I'd love to have more GAF members post their own/friends bands bandcamp sites. It's been good luck so far.

Alright, preparing the next album after the christmas days.
