ABOUT:
Recorded over the past 6 months in a single bedroom, TIMBERWOLF is the debut album of
singer-songwriter turned producer by necessity Sam Young. One part obsession with the
old west, two parts raw and a third part open tuning, TIMBERWOLF tackles the literal
meaning behind "bedroom folk" and how much crying you can get away with and still be
considered a man. Not really. We're just assuming you didn't read this far.

Woah guys, great others are posting too. Thanks for the recommendations all!

I was not expecting Marumeth to get that kind of reception, but well deserved
And the flurry of people is a good sign indeed. Makes reviewing worth it.

Might as well throw one on the list since I just discovered they have a full-length.

Album artwork is definitely... not as good as their EPs, but the music still holds up. Sort of on the Do Make Say Think side of post-rock.

Very good choice! Just gave it a listen, and I wouldnt object to other recommendations. Its painstakingly obvious how most records that come together nicely are instrumental ones. Guess we'll go for a few non instrumental ones in the next days though.

Btw, I got a theory that instrumental music is the music category that has the most widespread appeal currently. Not in terms of raw listener numbers, but in regard to how many different kinds of listeners it reaches.

As in:

Justin Bieber reaches Millions of people, but most of them are belonging to the same specific radio listener group

vs.

Marumeth can be enjoyed by people who usually enjoy Pop, Rock, Indie, Post Rock, Metal. Despite its alienating feature to many (boo no vocals), instrumental records bring us (listeners who prefer different sub genres) all back together again. :)

Short rant:

I am currently trying to bring the music we feature into shop radios in my area. Basically building a Wasfuersohr radio which the shops dont need to pay fees for since its not licensed music.

Our national, supposedly non-profit (!) agency for licensed/licensing music just told me that they wouldnt be interested in checking whether any of these songs are licensed or not since these arent songs they make money on and I needed to remind them that they are obligated to do so by law.

THOSE are the guys where you need to send composer information on music before you are able to play them at all, no matter whether the bands are licensed or not. Looks like I need to send them the composer's name of every single song title I want to use... in case they dont tell me another solution tomorrow.

Sigh. Thats going to be quite some work.

#end rant

some of the songs really remind me of Daft Punk.

I had the same impression actually, but kept it rather out of the review. I know its easier for others to relate to a certain style of music if you can just say "like...", but its probably one of my bigger problems writing this stuff up since I am very reluctant to drop a band name.

Anyway, I am better at organizing the framework to all of this than writing the actual reviews :P I wish I had 3 more people with Gabbo's writing talent to cover several genres.

Is "Pay what you want, even 0" kosher for this thread?

Sure. Every album/EP that you can get for free. Naturally, musicians tend to grow and some may charge their stuff later, but if its free now for an unpredictable amount of time then post it.

Musicians that say "Pay what you want, even 0" don't expect to make a huge amount of money from their music, but it's an incentive to let people know that they shouldnt object to throw them a few bucks if they like it. The way I see it: Everybody liking their music and telling others about them is raising the chances that it will reach someone who might think its worth supporting that certain band and might give a bit money.

In that case, I like these guys, Rogue Valley

They have a 4-album project out (each album for a season) that is pretty impressive if you like folkier stuff. My favorite out of the bunch is Centralia, PA (about the abandoned mine-fire town in Pennsylvania)

Just listened to Centralia. Very nice Folk Pop song. Thanks for the recommendation! Will be put on my to-do list.
Out of curiosity, where do you know them from?

Minnesota Public Radio, The Current. They are hands down the best public radio station in america and the best good-music stream on the internet.

Hey there GAF! A few weeks ago I teamed up with a bunch of talented artists from eight different countries around the world and we released a free charity compilation album.

It's a name your price download, but 100% of the proceeds go to charity, split between St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the International Justice Mission. It's mostly chilled instrumental beats w/ a winter mood. I had a lot of fun putting it together and am so glad the artists volunteered their work for this project. I think it turned out nice, I hope you guys enjoy it.

I haven't come across a more apt album title since I began doing this.
Really think this would go well with nature walks or David Lynch marathons.

Seems to be well liked in the other places we posted it in too.

Love it, thanks. Anytime I see an experimental drone album, and it's only 2 tracks, side A and side B, I know I'm gonna be in heaven. :)

I like this. It sounds like Black Swan, Fires Were Shot, and Deaf Center all mixed into one.

Here comes a new challenger! New entry in the category of the worst cover featured so far.
Interesting selection, but unfortunately also a wide difference in quality, but if you are feeling brave, its definitely interesting to listen through this electronic music experiment.

Not among the best we found so far, but genuinely interesting choice Gabbo.

My albums are free on Bandcamp (just input $0 at checkout) if you guys haven't heard my stuff yet. Good timing if you do since I plan on releasing my 3rd album sometime next week.

Is that one also going to be free/PWYW? Actually, I am quite surprised I didnt listen to your stuff yet, since I saw your threads about your music. No idea why I didnt listen to it, weird. Will do that this weekend.

Thanks man. Be sure to let me know what you think. And yes, the new album will be Free/Name Your Price.

Great :) And will do. Could I ask to post your new release here as well as soon as its released? I might miss your release thread/bump from your other thread for it.

Folk Country music today:

JD and the Longfellows - 2011 - Swinging for England

I don't like the slower songs that much, but definitely a fun listen.

As terrible as that album art is, I'm digging this a lot. I think I'm just in the perfect mood for it .

In other news, apparently one of my boys back in nashville finally finished up his first EP. Beautiful, beautiful stripped down, acoustic folk. It's damn good.

And the Timberwolf Official Thread is up and running, complete with a fresh link to the finalized album.

That is easily one of the neutral to better album covers I've come across reviewing for this blog. Freaky eyed guy and all. Will certainly look into Timberwolf and your friends EP.

I still think we should do some weird thing like making a coverart wallpaper with the good ones. Still thinking how to go about that.

Third album is out. Hope you guys dig it!

Great... now I all I see in my mind's eye as I'm listening to the album is your avatar.
With that, loved it. Very 16bit videogame soundtrack. Deliverance (No Rest for the Wicked) was my favourite track hands down.
Once I got through it, my mind started dreaming up remix ideas; female vocals on a few tracks, a Ronald Jenkees vs Agent Whisker remix album, etc.

Been listening to theses guys for a few weeks :

http://tearjerker.bandcamp.com/track/focus
(linked one of my favorite tracks)
The album is free. I ordered the CD, hand printed sleeve, only 100 copies(I have the 50th), maximum hipster edition certified.

Anyway great tunes if you like reverb in excessive amount...

In another style, this guy deserves more attention, although his music is only free in streaming, so I don't know if it suits the topic.(?)
EDIT: should have read the OP better, I have my answer. Still it's great music so i'll leave the link for once...

I'll check your link later! And I certainly wont flame you to death for posting that other link. But yeah, since basically every band allows free streaming this isnt too special and not exactly what I am looking for ;) Thanks though.

Thanks man! Yeah I've always considered my style similar to Jenkees so I wouldn't mind if that ever came up haha.

You were a bit too fast for me to get the review done today ;) But I'll see whether I can write it up tomorrow.

Thanks for reviewing my work! :D I'll be posting it on my official site once I get it updated (which should be soon).
