Freedom Wars Demo Impressions

Thanks for the impressions. God Eater is one of the hunting action games I couldn't get into and this does look similar in some respects but I still want to give it a try. The wall grapple looks fun.

Judging by the demo impressions video from niconico, this looks very promising. I didn't know what to expect at first, but getting a good look at what it's about made me realize I want this game.

Guess I'll go for that since I'm most probably on the plane that very same day xD

Anyway, the demo is pretty fun. Plays a bit like God Eater 2 but the framerate is not as stable. I think the game is a bit slow. The shooting is a bit hard and I have tried all button configurations(I am not a shooter person so that has to be it).

I really like the way they made you shave away years from your sentence as your score. And buy the "rights" to go 5m inside your cell:p

Ok I have played the demo little bit...fought about 6 stages so far.

brief thoughts:

-the visuals are amazing. I didn't expect it to be this good to be honest. It is very clean and crisp(pretty sure it's native resolution) and AA helps it look like bullshots. Probably the best looking Vita game I have played if I include both technical side and artistic side (Toukiden was also really good but I like this one bit better because of the art style).

-the game is surprising different from Monster Hunter clone style. I expected this to be very similar to God Eater but this is rather TPS/action game.

-the gunplay seemed pretty good, while melee play was disappointing. I still have to get used to the control and using the Ibara(whip) to the gameplay to make proper judgement on battle.

Well I will try out the demo more but I think this game has some potential. I will probably buy it day-1.

Demo alone is already more fun than all of GE2 imo. The mobility options that grappling provides is just a blast.

The second control scheme places the thorns on circle and run on R, which I found more confortable (especially after being used to run with R in Toukiden).
Some other actions change too - like, to use an item it's R+circle instead of just circle. Maybe more things changed, but I can't japanese. Shooting on aim mode is still done with R, of course.

It's a pity we only have access to one melee weapon, but melee seems fine. Gunplay is great.

I wonder if we'll be able to make bigger customizations on the characters. Only one of the male presets have a beard, but then you can't change the nose, face shape and such (or I missed something).

And can we change our names in the demo? I started with a male character (with a male name) and then changed to a lass, so the name feels wrong now.

Ok I might have to try changing the control scheme. Running with X was annoying since it's hard to change the camera while running.

I also hope the final version has more variety in customization. It has great potentials but lacks options like hairstyles or face sets.

I like the 2nd control scheme, but between the first and second scheme its pretty much either you get to move the camera while sprinting or move the camera while being able to aim shoot the Ibara with R.

I would rather prefer to be able to aim and shoot the Ibara with R, though I also like sprinting with R. I can't choose !

Running with X is super confusing, because I've been playing a lot of MH4 lately, so I was pressing wrong buttons all the time while playing the demo.
On the other hand, being able to quickly aim the Thorn might be a key to winning high level battles, so I guess I'll just stick with the first control scheme and try my best to get used to it.

You can get the Sword and the Spear from Mission 1-1 and 1-2 as a Special Achievement Reward.

You have to get all the Field Resources (Blue thingys) that appear on the field in every mission. Some of them are hard to find sometimes.

For 1-1, theres 4 in total. One where you first walk into it, the next one is in the room with 3 Targets on top of the left pillar, and the last 2 are in the final room, one at the top of the ledge where one target is behind cover, and under the stairs leading up to that ledge.

For 1-2, there's another 4 in total. Two in the first big room, climb up and look to your left. There's one in the corner. Drop down to the right side from there, it's in the corner. Second Room is one on ledge above the door you came in. Last room is behind the civilian pod. Drop the civilian and get it before you put her in there.

Enjoy your sword and spear ! They're awesome weapons.

Yeah. It's much faster to aim at the floor and Ibara away !

Hmm, I got the 4 orbs on each mission (and a special message after picking up the 4th) and they're not on my list of melee weapons to equip. Am I missing something?
edit: alright, just got them from my accessory. Thanks chap!

And now that you mentioned, while I felt no need to aim and thorn at the same time in the air, for ground ibara'ing it's really not practical to have it on circle. Hmmm.

I have tried rocket launcher + great sword combination and it's quite satisfying. The great sword feels better than the knives you start with but it is slow so I need to get used to it. And with Great Sword it seems you can't ibara on the abductor and mash the parts to break them?

Rocket launcher is awesome but the limited ammo is bad for taking care of smaller mobs when they appear. Kinda wish we could have secondary firearm like a pistol or something..

Oh nice. Didn't know about the demo. Going to download tonight.

So we're not even limited only to SMGs on the demo? I feel deceived (I did read somewhere it was only the kukri and the smg).

Tell me your secrets on getting more weapons, guys~

The abductors in 1-4 and 1-5, shoot off the rocket pods and chop off the shields respectively and collect them.

The weapons in the trial you can get are:

Normal smg
3 burst assault rifle with scope
Rocket launcher
Rocket pods
Mini gun
Auto shotgun

All these weapons come with random stats and levels. I find the minigun destroys the rocket pods and civilian shields super fast and is good for killing abductors.

I feel its much better than most of the weapons provided, while the other weapons would be good for pvp.

Nothing kills me more than a bad running animation. Game looks interesting though.

At first time I preferred the "run type" (second one) control set, because it allows you to run and move camera at the same time. However as I progress I started to feel like this game isn't designed around running. Instead shooting the sling (or "thorn") is more important. Now I'm trying to get used to the "technical type" (last one) control set...

I bet at least 50% of Hokkaido people are foreigners who didn't bother and just chose the first option on the prefecture list
Ok, 50% was hyperbolic

Also, Japan saved!

Tried the demo, loving it so far, not sure if anybody mentioned yet, but apparently you can dash attack (x + square) and also do evade zig zag (small sword) or back flip attack & stab (long sword) by pressing (X + triangle).

The demo of Freedom Wars is really, really good. Graphics are amazing, the story mode is the real deal (not lore text like SS), and I was amused doing shit and saw more years of prision added to my sentence. Characters more a little slow for my taste, but the action is fast and furious like SS, and there isn't the boredom slow like molasses of MH and Toukiden. Verticality with the Ibara is a much needed twist to the MH formula.

All those small details (like the surprising accurate name speech) and great customization helped the presentation. Could be one of the best vita games if there is enough content.

Only lacks right now is the online multiplayer test (one of the SS best features), but I think that the demo hasn't one or I didn't find it.

Demo doesn't have any kond of multiplayer and the retail version will ship with local mp - online mp will be added in the first big patch.

Sounds cool, but would somebody explain how the teamwork works as a single-player game?

If the game is designed to move slowly and methodically to stress teamwork (one player is escorting the civilians while others are trying to trap the monster before it can re-trap its quarry,) that works great as a multiplayer game. But AI teammates in teamwork scenarios are usually not reliable, so that play style feels like it could be punishing when you're not playing with friends? The game does have (or will have) online play, but I'm assuming that's not supposed to be the only way to play.

So is there an assignment system where your mates have stats or skills that you try to coordinate for best tactics? Or do they lock into jobs (this one's free-safety distance, this one's melee, this one's doing the thorn bombs)? Do you get used to your AI partners' general choices in battle and have a clear idea of what needs doing when depending on how your team is working at a given time? Or can you switch between characters in SP? How's it all balance out?

(EDIT - thanks, raven777!)

It's really hard to tell from the demo experiences. Basically it's 4 member team like other hunting game, but the difference is each character have what is called "Accessory" which is basically your CPU buddy. You can customize your Accessory just like your main character.

In the story mode you have story NPCs who fight with you and they also carry Accessory. So when you fill 4 NPCs you have 8 characters in the game.

When you fight with many story NPCs the fight is way too easy in the demo to make any judgement. There is the MMO holy trinity icon of DPS, Tank, Heal but I didn't really notice how they tank or heal in the game, since the fight was too easy and ended quickly.

When I fight alone with my Accessory, it can help with aggro and do some damage as well. When I die it comes to save me and stuff like that. You can touch the screen to give specific orders to the Accessory but I haven't tried them out yet. Also I don't know if you can give instructions to your story NPCs or not.

FW is looking better with each trailer, but I really hope that the mp patch is going to be released soon after the game.
Since most of its features rely on mp/coordination and so on, it would be sad if it ended like GE2, where people without a chance to play locally cleared the story and sold/stopped caring for the game, because the mp patch came half a year after its release.

Enjoyed the demo and thought it looked great.

But will still wait for impressions for the single player campaign before buying as that's what I care most about.

Apparently it should be coming within the first update, along with pvp.

That being said, 11 days to go ! Super hyped !

Hasemo, how is this game compared to Toukiden when it comes to graphics?.
Toukiden is pretty the way that older games look on emulators - higher resolution, but it still feels empty because of PSP limitations.
Freedom Wars looks way better, both from the design and purely graphical perspective.

Yeah, I know that it's supposed to be the 1st update, but I hope that means "within 1 month", not "within half a year".
