Front Mission DS

Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Grabbed it up last night and am really impressed with it. Always have been a casual fan of the Front Mission games. They never fully 100% clicked with me. I enjoy them but something just was never OMG status.. I mean it is a mech sRPG.. so damn it should do that to me.. But this remake of the SNES version is just awesome! So much tinkering you can do with your mechs but not down to the very last detail, enough to be deep, but not too much to be tedious. The game looks good, the maps are beautiful the mechs on the map are nothing to write home about but the little cut scene for each fight (which happens on the upper screen) are pretty impressive!

And you can tell this is an older game because it is hard. they don't wade you into the kiddie pool first, they throw you into to deep end.. now I am only a few missions in and I assume it gets easier as your pilots improve and you are able to buy badass stuff for your mechs

while the game has no English release date yet it seems like it is English ready... all of the menus in the game are in English and some of the story is told in English with Japanese subtitles. All of the coversations are in Japanese but if you were to import with no Japanese ability you'd be able to play but you be clueless for the most part about the character stories..

Hope this gets an English release date... it is really damn good. Been playing my DS the most of everything this last month or so...

Not feeling hopeful on this one. SE pretty much gave up on trying to release it here. If anything comes out I'm guessing their business plan is the "it makes money" ds gif. *sigh*

Is there really much difference from the SNES version?

here is the kicker.. I don't know! :lol never played it.. the graphics and backgrounds are better from the screens I have seen,,

That's weird that there is so much english in it. Maybe they could be considering an english release. The DS feels like a good platform to try out new franchises (or in this case to bring back an old forgotten one) since the userbase is so wide and varied. In addition, there is already a base for strategy games from Advance Wars, so it makes sense.

I`ve been wanting to pick up the DS version of FM1, as some of you may know I`m a huge FM fan. Ironically, though, I`ve been totally taken in by SRW W, the OTHER giant robot SRPG on DS. Too much to play. :(

I want to be a huge fan.. because the idea of the series is exactly what I want.. I also think we need more mech RPGs and SRPGs... and the DS one is hawt, hawt, hawt

Did you ever get to try FM3, Blackace?

I played a bit.. I played a lot more of front mission 4... and I still want to get 5

Not to derail the thread further, but definitely check out SRW W, blackace. FM is a great "real robot" series, and SRW W supplies the anime level ridiculousness you might be looking for on the other end of the spectrum.

I can`t agree more that we need more mech based RPGs and SRPGs. I would love an entirely mech based RPG.

If Atlus can make enough coin bringing Super Robot Wars to America, Square should do just fine bringing a much less esoteric game here.

I'd bet on it coming here, but everytime I make such an authoritive statement, it ends up never happening (call me NOTstrodamus). But I still think its likely to show up here.

Hmm I might have to just break down and import this. maybe I can just wait for it to go on sale on play-asia or something...

Oh wait its a S-E game so that might not happen :(

I still need to beat FM5...

FM3 is easily the best in the series. FM5, as I said in my LTTP thread, is the love letter to FM fans. It`s fantastic, depressing, and has a sweeping story that covers the entire universe. Look on the back of the FM1 box, and you`ll notice a scene from FM5 involving the character with blond hair. That character plays a MAJOR role in FM5.

I am sure it is coming to the states.. all the English they put into the core game so they wouldn't have to do during localization shows me that! :D

I wouldn`t get too hopeful. FM5 is almost entirely english, too. :\

It is the perfect fit for an RPG... Chinese lore has plenty of magic you can use.. Oddly enough the last pure RPG (that I know of) like this was made by..... ECA... :lol :lol Deathlord. When I played it I thought it rocked!

Yea, I don`t see why they should stop FM at ALL. I think they misread the poor sales of FM4, and chalked it up to a lack of interest in the subject matter.

NO S-E, MAYBE IT`S A LACK OF INTEREST IN SHITTY PLOTS TO STEAL GOLD AND ESCAPE TO SOUTH AMERICA

For whatever reason I've never been able to get into the Front Mission series since the original. I'd like to remedy that one day; especially FM3.

But I'm a massive fan of the original. For me, Front Mission is on par with Tactics Ogre and Seiken Densetsu 3 in that those were the three import games I was zealous over for ages. I'd worship their previews in GameFan, mail Squaresoft USA (yes, on paper delivered by horse and ox cart) asking when they'd be localized, and so forth. There was such a mystique about them being unatainable, which was only bolstered by trying to play translated versions of them by other means.

So the game will always have an notable aura about it for me. I can't wait for the DS version.

:lol :lol

Funny thing is though, the likes of Falcom (Ys and etc.) have actually went on to make a bunch of "Mythical Chinese" RPGs and SRPGs, although they're mainly (or only?) on the PC, far as I know. And even "better", a number of them are actually in Chinese! :D

Probably doesn't do much for what you guys may be wanting, but they're out there, if you really want 'em...

There was that one SRPG Saiyuki: Journey West for the PS1. It was based on one of the original tales of Son Goku, I think on his way to India or something. I only played a bit but it seemed pretty cool.

I actually bought one in BC when I lived in Seattle and American money magically tripled when I crossed the border.. it was ok.. totally unplayable because it was in Chinese but it looked fun...

it wasn't so cool... :lol :lol yeah but I was saying pure rpg.. but yeah you are right

Oh wait, there`s also that Korean MMO Silk Road, that`s based on Chinese mythology and history.

But...it`s....a korean MMO...so yea.

Wait, what parts in FM5 are in English? I don't remember too much, in fact I remember lots of political/military babble that was hard to understand...

Oh really? Yeah I only played up until a little after you got Son Goku. I don't even know if I still have the copy...

The original FM on SNES had a lot of English too. IIRC the only parts in Japanese were item descriptions, and speech. You could play the game pretty easily with no understanding of Japanese.

I definitely suggest trying to get the melee skill, missile skill and machine gun skill that let you target a specific body part. The missile skill is the best one because you can cripple enemies before they get into range.

I've never finished the first FM but Ive started and restarted it a bunch.

FM3 I played maybe 4 or 5 missions in and stopped (I was LTTP on this just like every other PS1 game).

FM4 I liked at first, and it had good cutscenes but the pacing was really slow and battles felt longer than any other FM game. I should try and finish it though.

I will check this out if there's no news of a US release in the next few months. I hope Square port 2 and 3 to the DS. Or maybe make a new FM game for the DS; fat chance of that happening though.

This is a terrific game. I was originally jaded by 4, my first Front Mission - this is MUCH better.

Aside from the game's inherent quality, **** SNES ports on DS. Bring us the portable Virtual Console.

oh! forgot to say, the music is all sorts of 90s kind of awesome!

I didn`t mean the cutscenes. All the menus and such in game were in English, just like FM1. FM1 DOES have slightly more english, it seems.

The abundance of English really has made playing this really enjoyable so far. It's true about the difficulty, though, as things are ramped up pretty early on and its leaves you with little room for taking a breather! As for the touch-screen controls, I love it - S-E has implemented that aspect perfectly, I'd say. A lot more accurate than I expected.

Oh and the music is indeed fantastic, in a retro way, plus the visuals are very tasty at the smaller resolution! :D

I think you have your games mixed up. FM5 has all its menus in Japanese. FM1, 2 and 4 used English menus, I believe.

Anyway, anyone know what's actually different between this and the SFC/PSOne games? I'm assuming it has the extras scenario from the PSOne release, and I think it uses the enhanced graphics from that version. I heard the music was remixed by the FM4/5 composers too, there any truth to that?

It has the extra scenario from the PS1 version, plus extra missions and stuff on top of that.

According to this the game is coming to NA under the name Front Mission (without the 1st)! I'm not 100% sure if that is an official blog though so I didn't make a new topic, feel free to do so if you know the details! Can anybody confirm this?

Edit:

It's real!!!! :D

According to those media create threads, this title never even made it off the ground. Sold like...20k units or less or something. I remember because I was hoping for localization, but because it sold so horribly, figured there was no hope.

*edit* Looking back, adds up to about 30k
