Fuck Xbox One's Disconnecting Controllers And Frustrating Inability To Fix It

I don't have disconnects, but the game sound ( using the stereo adpater) does crackling. Like if the sound stopped for a very short time. It i connect the gamepad throw usb this stops. Sounds like a wireless problem, but i don't have anything on that may cause interference.

Just get a longer wire if the play-and-charge one isn't long enough. Shouldn't be more than $5.

I guess I'll have to. I was trying to avoid it because I'm cheap and it shouldn't be necessary.

(I also don't like the idea of having a cord stretch across my room and have it lay on part of my bed, where there may be cat hair from my cat who likes to hang out with me while I game. I guess I could just use alcohol wipes on it regularly.)

I should note that my disconnects tonight occurred when I had low batteries. That said, I got one before I got the low battery warning. I got that warning after both of them, though.

However, after the last one, I was able to game for an hour or so without anything happening.

If it continually disconnected, I'd say there's something interfering in my room, but when it happens only once or twice in 5-6 hours and not at all some days, it's hard to believe that.

This happened to me 2 times last night play rare replay my batteries were full it kept saying controllers are disconnected I'm like wtf how ?

Why would you use alcohol wipes on the cord anywhere your cat has touched it? Do you even pet your cat and if so does that require sterilization right after?

You should probably wash your sheets with bleach daily too.

S/he said s/he suffers from OCD. Show some empathy.

I would probably do it once every week or two - nothing too absurd.

I have a fear of dust, due to all of the electronics in my room. My cat loves the room, though, because it's in the basement and it's cool, plus he likes to be near me all the time. So I let him come in and lay on my bed or on the floor, and pet him a bit with the back of my hand. I don't with my palm, because I'd have to wash again. Not because I think he's really dirty, just because I don't touch anything while gaming, other than the controller, system, remote or TV. Or games, of course.

Stupid OCD.

I use those lint rollers to get almost all of the cat hair off, but need to wash the comforter again.

Yea, that's why I am saying to just use a wire. You've looked into pretty much all of the possible causes, and nothing worked out so far, so I don't think you will ever be able to fix it. Best to just forget about the whole thing and use wired.
If you've got a carpet on the floors instead of hardwood, you can run the wire under it, then run in along the bedframe so it's neat and tidy, and your cat wouldn't get on it.

It's tile, but I could live with it.

I just want to get rid of the problem, though. Not bandaid it. I'm considering contacting their media support team to see if I can get a replacement console, but I don't know if it's worth it.

It'll depend on whether the sound issue (it would cut out randomly) goes away or not.

Did any of you guys fill out that survey MS released via its support forums, pertaining to this issue? That was months ago.

EDIT: Man, there's quite a bit of talk about controllers disconnecting on the Xbox Forums' support section. This must be a major issue. It's all over Reddit too

I never said they were huge. Just that there's a noticeable amount of them.

There's lots of individual threads about the problem, but the 137 page one was locked by Microsoft with a blanket message.

Here's:

One

Two

Three

Four

Five

Six

Seven

Eight

Nine

And another weird one. These aren't all of them, and I I've barely gotten past July's threads on the official forums.

I'm not saying there aren't people having issues, but you classified it as major (I.e. rrd). There are obviously interfere issues for some but if it was major this thread would be more then the handful of posters in this thread.

Yeah, I guess so.

There's a lot of people with it, though, so it's definitely not a small or rare thing.

and then you find out they all have their xbox plugged into a power strip or surge protector and not into the wall..... I kid I kid, but honestly, you need to do this to try and prove it out

It's not small, and it sucks that you can't find the source of the interface. I honestly don't think a new console would solve the issue either.

I feel for you. But a heads up look out for that segate hd you bought, they have the worst faluire rate. Hope you dont have to make a thread for that in a few months.

I'm on my fourth console already. The third one had a clicking fan, and Microsoft recommended me exchange the other two because of this issue.

I've tried several controllers, too.

I just wish it'd go away.

As for the hard drives I'm reviewing: Thanks for the gesture. I hope they won't fail for many years, like my Seagate from college which is several years old. Apparently those failure numbers weren't entirely reliable, though. That said, I wouldn't make a new thread about that.

If you are lucky enough to have a console where wired connection works even though the wireless connection is faulty everything should be good. Perhaps when you upgrade to a slim model in a few years you could switch back. Good luck.

As previously said my friends console didn't give a fuck if it was wireless or wired but now that he got a completely new Xbox (returning the old one to the store) everything is good.

Microsoft's blanket message on their forum replies is to send consoles with this recurring issue in for repair. Maybe that's them quietly acknowledging some faulty wifi boards?

EVERY SINGLE TIME I TURN ON MY CONSOLE I HAVE TO SIGN IN. AUTO SIGN IN WILL NOT WORK.

THEN I HAVE TO QUIT WHATEVER GAME IS IN STAND BY MODE BECAUSE IT GIVES ME A CONNECT CONTROLLER BUG.

EVERY FUCKING TIME.

Ever since I moved to an apartment in SF, I have to pair my controller to the Xbox almost every time I play. I don't get any disconnects though.

I'm guessing it has to do with interference. There's a ton of wifi networks, and I know a few of my neighbors play games too, so probably a bunch of other wifi controllers and wireless headsets and who knows what else.

Even though you're in the basement, there could be some other environmental factors. Given that you've been through a variety of consoles and controllers, it seems to not be a hardware issue. As unfortunate as it is, the solution is to just use a wired controller for now.

Unfortunately you're likely right.

I could live with playing while wired for now. It's just the unknown that bugs me and constantly plays on my mind.

Ok so I have an update. I think I have figured out what my problem was and the solution that fixed my problem.

Basically my xbox was inside a solid oak tv cabinet. Now the portion to the front of the console was exposed and I have a solid oak coffee table with drawers in front of me.

I experienced these disconnects frequently. That is until I removed my xbox from the cabinet, and put the machine on top of a sideboard which is next to my tv. For about a week now, I havent experienced one disconnect!

However, it is a joke that my xbox needs to sit there in order for the controllers to work, and it is enraging my other half to no end. My wii U sits in the cabinet and works flawlessly.

Congrats. Here's hoping.

Mine is on the far left side of my TV stand, which has no doors. Nothing is in front of it.

I wish something was now.

Edit: My grandmother's oxygen machine is situated in the room above mine, but I doubt that would give off wireless interference. It's also on 24/7, so you'd think I'd get disconnects more often if it was at fault.

I would not suggest placing wireless devices behind doors but when other devices work fine doing so plus I have friends with similar setups, it's annoying that the xbox one has to be the only device with problems after the rather rock solid xbox 360 wireless controller getting things right for the last 10 years.

Kind of reminds me a bit of the ouya issues with the controller, having to place the ouya on it's side or in direct view to make a connection.

My disconnects still happen and i'm only about 4 feet away from the xbox one, which is out in the open on top of a chest of drawers.

I moved the oxygen machine, which -- as its manual says -- emits an RF frequency. It's supposed to be low though, and "shouldn't cause interference with nearby devices."

I hope this fixes it. But I don't know if I can permanently move it from where it was.

I watched a tear down of the new deigned 3.5mm controller and it had a shield over some module on the pcb.

Covert on the top, old stock on the bottom.

The only thing near my xbox that could be emitting anything would be my other consoles and I still have this problem.

Got disconnected about 10 or 12 times last night while playing banjo kazooie. Not cool :(

Thought I'd fire up the Bone to play a little CoD AW while waiting for GTA V to install on my PC.

After about six attempts where the system would either freeze, or just shut down for no reason I finally did a hard reset, and got the game to boot.
I swear I've never had such a temperamental system after about 14 months of ownership. It really pisses me off. I really question the expected lifespan of this unit, and sadly I'm out of the warranty period.

Last night I turned on my XB1 for the first time in quite awhile to check out the Forza 6 demo. It ran a system update at boot, and now my controller is disconnecting every couple of minutes. I'm supposed to believe that it worked fine since launch, and after a system update I suddenly have interference?

Sooooo it's a software issue?
Could one reinstall the OS via USB? Like a clean installation of the OS? I wonder if some files are botched during installation of an update.
It would explain why it's happening to some and not other, when everyone is using the same OS and hardware.

Not sure if my issue was the same, but I pushed the Home button on the controller today and noticed that the Xbox didn't power on. I then turned the console on separately and the controller would not sync automatically. I tried going through the sync procedure and nothing worked. I even tried another controller which I had been using for PC and that wouldn't sync either.

Finally, I grabbed a cable and plugged the controller in via USB and it was recognized immediately. I updated the controller, just to be safe. After removing the wire, the controller synced right away.

Really weird stuff. Never had this happen with another system.

Yeah, I've had that happen once before. Lately though I just have to resynch after I've used it with my PC. Had to take my first console back because controllers would never work wirelessly at all :-P

I've had a pad drop it's connection memory like that too about half a year back, I had to pair it up again with a usb cable but I have no idea why it did such a thing.

Sorry for double posting but I bumped into a rather curious thing with disconnecting controllers last night while playing local multiplayer with my nephew, I have the new 3.5mm controller and my nephew was using the old launch day controller (the one with the connection issues) and all was fine, we were playing minecraft split screen and he was player 2.

Now, about an hour into playing his controller dropped connection for a few seconds before auto pairing itself to the console again which has been an issue for me since early this year but what grabbed my attention is that the auto pairing placed him as player 3 instead of resuming control as player 2.

There was no way to disconnect the controller and reconnect to regain player 2's controls, he was stuck as player 3 until we fully powered down the console and turned it on again.

I moved my X1 from my closet where it was next to 4 other consoles and more stuff to right above my TV on a stand about 8 feet in the air (I have a 2 year old living with me so gotta keep stuff high or hidden). This was 5 days ago and I have yet to experience a disconnect. Prior to that it was happening 10x a night.

Total movement of console was 8 feet.... now my controller is in direct sight of my console and all things seem better. Fingers crossed..

Ever since I moved my Grandmother's oxygen machine from above my bedroom, I've been pretty lucky.

I've had one random disconnect, and a couple when my batteries have been pretty much toast. But, other than that, nothing.

Fingers crossed that I've found my fix. Best of luck to everyone else.

I was having a lot of disconnects (on both Ones that I own) until an update a few months back that was meant to fix it. After that it was perfect. But I joined the preview program when backwards compatibility was announced, and since then it has been pretty bad again sadly.

I dunno man, that seems like a pretty steep price to pay for getting rid of your disconnects. Your gram grams probably loves you so much.

But for real, why does an oxygen machine emit radiowaves?

I was luckily able to move it across the hall and into another room, without objections from my family. I thought I'd have to move it back, but they haven't said anything.

It quite possibly works better where it is now, though, because the cord doesn't get as tangled by our stairs and her stair chair.

Anyways, I decided to give it a shot because it was the only thing I hadn't tried, outside of turning my WIFI off completely which I didn't want to do. I looked at the manual beforehand, and it said that it does emit RF interference, although it's a small amount that should not interfere with anything.

When I told a support person I'd dealt with previously at Xbox, he said it's possible that was the problem, because they have heard a few reports of RF interference.

But I'm still having an issue where my console's sound will cut out mid-game. It comes back when I press the X button and happens randomly/not too often, but doing a hard reset and double-checking port openings didn't fix it.

I'm geniunely considering just going PS4 and PC this generation because of this fucking bullshit. My controllers disconnect several times a session. It's fucking with me Madden worst of all because I'll be in the middle of a play and it pauses to say reconnect controller. The console is 4 ft from me max, with the only interference being a wireless router in the other room. I will admit that the latest controller update helped a lot, but it still happens way too much.

If this new controller revision does fix this, I should be able to get Microsoft to swap out my 3 controllers that I've bought with the system. They all experience the disconnect problem with seemingly no difference. That's nearly $160 on controllers alone that barely work.

If it's 4 feet, why not just use it wired? I mean, I personally wouldn't forego a console for this issue, especially if using a wire fixed it.

And it feels like I need to add a disclaimer, just so some people won't accuse me of defending Microsoft. Here it goes:
Yes, this issue is bullshit and shouldn't happen, and Microsoft should fix it, and people shouldn't be forced to use a wire on a wireless controller, and this is bullshit, and the cake is a lie.

I got my MCC system during the Samsung Best Buy a few weeks back, and have only turned it on maybe four times, to set up Netflix. This last time I turned it on, the controller was now unsynced, and the system will no longer wirelessly connect, it finds no connections ever.

What the heck is wrong with this brand new system?

I have it four feet away because it's stretched out from entertainment center so I have clear line of site. it's already an eye sore just to play it, so yes, a usb cable would help but also mean I need to permanently have it on the middle of the floor just to be able to reliably play it.

That sucks.

Is interference an issue with Wi-Fi direct?
Interferences are an issue with any radio technology.

Wi-Fi (Direct or not), Bluetooth and a bunch of other wireless devices have to share the same frequencies, and so naturally interfere with each others.
Some devices handle these interferences better than others, though, and it looks like in the case of the XB1, it's not really good at dealing with them.
