Fuck Xbox One's Disconnecting Controllers And Frustrating Inability To Fix It

Interferences are an issue with any radio technology.

Wi-Fi (Direct or not), Bluetooth and a bunch of other wireless devices have to share the same frequencies, and so naturally interfere with each others.
Some devices handle these interferences better than others, though, and it looks like in the case of the XB1, it's not really good at dealing with them.

huh, I usually have my phone in my pocket while playing. It's using bluetooth, wifi, amongst LTE and whatnot. I really wonder if that could be a big cause.

I got my MCC system during the Samsung Best Buy a few weeks back, and have only turned it on maybe four times, to set up Netflix. This last time I turned it on, the controller was now unsynced, and the system will no longer wirelessly connect, it finds no connections ever.

What the heck is wrong with this brand new system?

This is my issue too. :( I was hoping to find a solution, but I guess there isn't. There's a 6 page thread with this issue of the controller unsyncing after turning the console off with no solutions. Oh well.

I had mine plugged in constantly with a fireq charging cord. Worked great for a month then it started disconnecting CONSTANTLY. Now its wireless and burns threw batteries :(

OK. Fixed my issues by replacing this:

foWIElf.jpg

Before it used to disconnect every min or so and the range was like 2 meters max. Now everything is working fine and the range is as it was originally.

Same.

I mean it was clear to me that the hardware is the culprit especially considering how when you press MS on the issue they happily exchange the console. Bought a new wireless board on ifixit and no issue since.

Had my Xbox since Monday and I'm having this issue today, it has disconnected three times in the last hour. What a fucking joke. First the PS4 has terrible range and lag if my coffee table is between the controller and the console and now this. These consoles are a bit of a joke.

Geez Microsoft can't catch a break. Seems they always have hardware issues. I only use mine to play dance central so I don't even know if my Xbox has this issue. I am however having issues with the rubber on my ds4 stick. Seems like everyone is cutting corners.

Link?

Mine is fine, but it'd be nice to see what the actual issue is.

Every piece of hardware ever has hardware issues. It's not an MS specific issue to have funky issues.

My 2 week old new controller disconnected on me while playing forza tonight, first time it has happened with the new pad, i've only played games for about 6 hours since I got the controller.

annoying shit, I want 360 wireless back at least that worked all the time.

The only disconnects I've had since moving the oxygen machine to another room were after:

A) Taking the controller upstairs, then bringing it back again and gaming. I think that screwed up the sync a bit. It'd happen after resyncing, once maybe, then stop.

B) Very low batteries

So I think I've solved my issue, thankfully.

I had this issue pretty bad starting a few weeks after the Xbox One launch. I think the firmware updates for the controllers and the system updates have really helped in my case.
It is pretty rare anymore that I have disconnects.

So I finally connected up my Xbox One and... down on the dpad doesn't work properly. Ordinarily this wouldn't bother me too much, but I use the dpad for navigation and typing, so this sucks. The prospect of having to return the entire console because of a dpad, after I've just rope tied and set everything up is pretty annoying.

Secondly, does the Xbox One no longer come with a wired headset? I have a 3.5mm jack in the controller, can I just use the mic and ear piece that came with my Galaxy S6? Or even the PS4 one?

Edit: Phew, they agreed to swap just the pad out and not the entire console. Good stuff.

After spending a week away from home with my xbox one at a completely different location and using the brand new controller I bought a little while back i'm staring to think that the launch xbox one has issues more so then what might be interfearing.

I have been playing forza using the 3.5mm jack on the new controller for sound and in the first three days using it with batteries I was getting sound pops and even a controller disconnect while sat directly in front of the xbox one, which was on it's packaging box about 2 - 3 feet away from me. When the batteries died I used the controller with a long USB cable and it was flawless, no sound pops and no dropped connections (like it should be)

I used batteries for the final day and had sound issues again, like the wireless connection was so on the edge that sometimes it would very quickly lose frequency and return again every 5-10 minutes.

If anyone else has a new controller with the headphone jack or even a xbox one headset can they see if they get sound pops and issues while playing a game using the controller? i'm interested if it's just how they are designed or if it's a connection issue, it will sound like a little static or sound pop like a radio out of frequency.

When I was reading about why apple earbuds do not work with the 3.5mm jack - you get a buzz noise over everything, I bumped into some threads and posts online saying that mics on most headsets will work but I have never tried it, i'm just using a regular sony brand set of tiny earphones for the xbox one.

I got a disconnect this morning while using a Rock Band guitar. :(. That was my first disconnect in a while.

The oxygen machine wasn't even in the house.

Hadn't happened to me in months, but happened during Forza 6. Odd.

I have been dealing with this issue for a while now. It definitely improves after a hard reset for a short period of time. I have tried different controllers and a new xbox one and was still having issues; I'm talking about 15 disconnects during a session, it was really bad. Recently I traded in my controller for a lunar white and it has only disconnected one time. This is with the current dash and the NXOE. Something has definitely changed.

I think it can be controller specific as I had this problem with one of mine.

After the left thumbstick went (again) I had it replaced and the new one has been fine ever since.

Left thumbstick is still shit though!

Edit: the whole controller was replaced, not the thumbstick.

My launch day controller developed a faulty left stick and it was never really used that often, the worst it went through was a few months of titanfall and garden warfare, it started to spike to the left now and again.

Not wanting to derail the thread but if when you click it down and rotate it you get a sort of popping/clicky reaction then it's almost certainly the grey clip on the microswitch that has sheared.

Just buy a cheap torx driver and some epoxy glue.

Dismantle your controller, see YouTube, Hold the grey clip tight against the microswitch and apply epoxy to hold it back. Keep holding for a good 5 minutes until it's set and don't use it or test it for 24 hours.

Just be careful not to get any epoxy on the down click button (you'll see what I mean)

If you have a slightly wobbly thumbstick as well, then get a small slither of paper, bend it into a u-shape and insert it into the hole on the underside of the stick so you have basically lined 3 sides of the hole with paper with two ends sticking out the top. Position it back into position on the microswitch. The paper acts as a packer and eliminates the wobble.

Again, sorry to derail. :0)

...

Well I used the moment to go buy the 3.5mm jack version of the controller, it came out at the perfect time.

Good advice though, next time i'll try to fix it, I fixed my chrome 360 LE controller by opening it up and taking the bumpers out of a white controller and swapped them over, looks funky in white and reflective silver but it works!

As I understand this xbox1 controller used Wi-Fi Direct. That can work on 802.11 a, g and n Wi-Fi standards.Wi-Fi Direct devices operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and can connect to 802.11g and some 802.11n devices. Wi-Fi Direct devices also work in the 5 GHz frequency band to connect to 802.11a and some 802.11n. Many devices operate in both frequency bands.

I was thinking some of your problems could be related to what else was using the channels that the device was using. There are some android (wifi analystics) apps that can see what is in your area. You may want to look at that and maybe change your wireless channels. Not sure you can control that on the xbox.

So the fixit solution, if that is fixes it for you, just means that the board had failed and you replaced it. Fixit solution says its just an refurbed oem board. So this is just a fix for those out of warranty and feel like they can do it on their own and save some bucks. Its doesn't look like they modded it. Odd that that part would fail. Wonder if it was a bad batch at launch.

I sold my black controller and will be using one of the new ones from now on. I only get rare disconnects now -- thankfully -- but hope to eliminate them this way. I also received a replacement console, though, because the audio would randomly cut out during gameplay and would come back when I went to dash, making me think it was a buggy audio card.

Last night I had problems playing Rock Band. Just got the xbox one. The guitar would stop responding to button prompts unless I power cycled it, is this the same thing?

I had a little dabble with this the other night...

I was playing some TMCC and my duracells finally died, so I tossed in a pair of eneloops that seem to be on their way out (they were fully charged though) and I started getting connection drops every other minute.. I switched to another pair that were purchased at the same time as those and they had similar results.

I knew the batteries were dying, they were pretty old and used a ton, so I already bought some new Eneloops and had them in the package still, on the ready. I swapped in some of those and the issue went away immediately.

I'm not sure what this proves... Maybe batteries with an erratic current are the issue? I'm not sure, but I haven't had the issue since until I popped those same older eneloop batteries in another time last night to see if the results were the same and it started with the connection drops again.

Weird.

I have a launch console and this issue has plagued me from the start. Foolishly I waited it out hoping an update would resolve, however all thats done is push me out of my warrantee period :(

Its spoilt my enjoyment of the xbox one and makes multiplayer games miserable, as when I have a lucky streak and actually do well, i get a controller disconnect which throws it all away!

As a result I hardly play my xbox one but Halo 5 has brought me back again. Id still love to get this sorted, will MS repair out of warrantee or will I have to use the fixit guide and do it myself?

So this has started happening to me for the first time. My 1TB MCC bundle console. Had it since August and not an issue till just now. Disconnects like every 2 minutes or so. Fuck.

I've started getting disconnects now after total solidity since day 1. I'm wondering if it's related to twisting the pad/ pushing buttons in a certain way as it seems to happen at frantic points in halo 5 when I've been pushing hard on buttons.

I just switched out eneloops for my Sony rechargeables and the disconnects have stopped. My Halo 5 console doesn't have the issue. But 1TB MCC one didn't for the last 3 months either.

When I received my day one console on launch day my controller disconnected multiple times during my first hour of play. I realized that the connectors that touch the contacts on both sides of the batteries were not holding them in very tightly so I used a little piece of thin cardboard to cover the batteries and then I put the batter cover over them (it was a very tight fit). I was annoyed that I had to do this, but it worked. After about a week I took the cardboard out and I never had the issue again. Perhaps forcing the batteries in tight against the contacts for a while forced the contacts to conform to the proper placement.

I only had this issue with one controller, and it only lasted for that one hour. Every other controller, and the system itself, worked perfectly.

I have literally never had this happen in the approximately one year (to the day) that I have owned my Xbox One. Luck is on my side I guess?

I haven't had an issue since switching to the newer Forza controller and selling my older black one. Knock on wood.

Good luck to you guys who are still dealing with it. I think mine was mostly caused by the oxygen machine upstairs, though I still got the odd disconnect after moving it.

Just had my controller disconnected for the fiftieth time. It's not during gameplay, but when I use the controller to turn the system on.

I'll press the power button on the controller and it doesn't trigger the system to go on. So then the two become out of sync, and need to be resynced. Then my network needs to be set up again, followed by a reboot to get everything back to normal.

Seriously getting tired of this shit.

that is my exact problem. it never goes during gameplay, just after i try and boot the console up again from standby

Just want to say thanks for the ifixit solution. Managed to fix mine recently. I've been waiting for the entire year. Feel relief that I don't need to bother with any disconnect. Hopefully it won't happen again. Fingers crossed!

My less than 1-month old Xbone was disconnecting quite a bit, but it got even worse (disconnects every 1-5 minutes and reboots from the reconnect attempts).

I actually got in a bootloop where I had to unplug the batteries from the controller to keep the thing from constantly rebooting.

They had me RMA it. Got a refurb (I assume) back, only one disconnect since.

No PS4 problems or Wii U problems at all (at least not since I moved the router an extra couple of feet away, used to get some controller lag otherwise).
