Full Screen Mario (Fan Game)

Full Screen Mario

Full Screen Mario is a fully HTML5 remake of the original Super Mario Brothers. You can play the original levels, play through some of literally millions of possible random maps, or create your own using the level editor.

Since I'm on my iPad, I haven't been able to try it yet, but I thought this might be something GAF would be interested it in. Saw it on Cnet, and if the article is accurate, the stages made with the level editor are challenging. It's something I've wanted in an official 2D Mario game for some time now.

Enjoy!

EDIT: We can make threads about fan games right? Not entirely sure and only decided to make this since it was on a site like Cnet.

Mmm, the randomized levels make this super worthwhile just so you have good ol' Mario but with new stuff.

This doesn't control or animate very accurately to the NES version and whoever decided to make up jump is a crazy person.

1-1 played fine, 1-2 was really laggy half way in.

The random level thing was rather cool, had a hard looking stage with no mushrooms anywhere but failed to clear it.

Nice job simulating Mario 1. Could use more tweaks for perfection, but this is the closest I've seen to emulating a Mario game in terms of handling and physics from a fangame.

I just assumed you could use space since that's what most platformers use on PC if not using a controller. Haven't hit up once. lol

I tried making a stage and couldn't figure out how to save it. Doesn't matter anyway because the it kept randomly erasing the first part of the level as I moved further to the right.

Feels kinda weird. Odd collision too; the koopa troopas used to fit under the 1 block gaps in 1 - 2. Fun anyway. I love that game.

In all honesty the game is just too old at this point to be any fun to play.
Awesome back then, though.
And cheers to the guy that made this!

Unless you're basing this opinion on playing the original, that may be coming from the meh controls of this version.

Input lag? I like the weight he's gone for, makes it more realistic.

But seriously, played for 5 minutes and got bored. Nice work though. No doubt be taken down sharpish.

Not bad! Also:

I never knew mario was so floaty

I like being able to kill enemies easier due to the wider range in viewing. Also nice to see they added in the warp pipes.

Already discussed on GAF, and Nintendo has evidently already sought some sort of takedown.

"Nintendo respects the intellectual property rights of other companies, and in turn expects others to respect ours as well," Nintendo said in an e-mailed statement. "Nintendo is seeking the removal of the content, as we vigorously protect against infringement of our intellectual property rights."

The site's author, college student Josh Goldberg, concedes that he didn't get permission from Nintendo to create the site. He says he wasn't worried about the copyright implications when he started working on the site last year because "I didn't think it would be a big project." Now that it's getting broader attention, he says, "I honestly don't know what to do in this situation."

Man, the controls are laggy and imprecise as hell, can't play Mario like this. Wonder why though. I made a HTML5 platformer for fun a while back, and I was easily able to make the controls perfectly responsive.

Random levels are too much filled with ennemies x)

This is awesome. I always wanted to experience these retros games in a wider aspect ratio. Someone please do SMW.

Super Mario Bros X
Redigit's game (before Terraria), Nintendo asked him to stop updating/releasing it.
It's sad because there is still tons of awesome custom level/world being released.

Redistributing Nintendo's copyrighted content as "open source" makes it even more illegal than it was.

Why do you even care? The guy makes no money off it, Nintendo doesn't lose anything and we get a neat game.

Note: I'm not talking about this game specifically because I haven't played it yet. I've just noticed a bizarre subset on GAF that attacks fan games in an effort to... I'm not even sure. Why should fans care about the IP rights of a company when the developer is not profiting from its use? Fan games have been around for decades and I'd honestly include several of them in my favorite games ever.

For example, this is a remake of Quest for Glory 2 that I'd much rather play than the original: http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/qfg2/

edit: And before someone says "IP holders have to protect their property or risk losing it", please show me one videogame case where this actually happened.

I have absolutely nothing against fangames. In fact, I directed one of the famous Chrono Trigger fangames which were C&Ded.

I just think that claiming Super Mario Bros. is open source discredits the fangame, as well as the Creative Commons organization. They should have simply put the usual "we don't own this franchise" disclaimer stuff.

This isn't a rom, this is actually original code. What's taken from Mario NES are the graphics and music. Is it illegal to have sprites on your computer? A bit confused. I usually see people flaunting video game sprites in their avatars all the time.

Neat, but it didn't play too well in Firefox. Maybe it works better in Chrome.

Random was neat, but I ran into a dead end.

the problem is the complete reproduction of the original Super Mario Bros., complete with the donate link at the bottom

if it was just the random levels, Nintendo would likely not give a shit, but the dude is giving away the exact same game that Nintendo is currently trying to sell on multiple consoles.
