Further off the deep end: SECONDS UNTIL GAME!

I'm sick of modern game design, I make no secret of it and no doubt the usual suspects are tired of reading my bitching.

However lately I've come up with this crazy new principle.

Seconds until game!

Where-in the amount of time wasted between me putting in the game, pressing start, and getting thrown into the action impacts my opinion of a game. Exhibit A: The monumental Egotagaki of Ninja Gaiden Σ - I've never played a game in which I had to sit through a god damn legalese crawl of "DO NOT COPY MY GAME UNDER PENALTY OF BLAH BLAH THIS IS YOU NOT KILLING NINJAS!"

WTF IS THIS SHIT?!

Nevermind the fact that on top of that, I also cannot skip the Team Ninjerk logo. Because like, I totally didn't know who made the game, and sincerely really care. I really do. NOT MASHING X, ZOMG!

Crazy?

Perhaps.

But it works for me.

The less time I have to spend with bullshit tutorials, cut scenes, and general other garbage that is not me mashing buttons or blowing shit up - the better!

Anybody else agree?

Give me Warhawk, or give me death.

Here, I would like to mention the ****ing unskippable 1 minute intro (plus a few screens before this) in Godfather: Blackhand Edition.

I don't want to watch the damn intro every time I turn on the game!

If you install the game, it goes to the logo and if you press start, the title screen appears, that isn't slow.

Iwata specifically mentioned this at E3 '06 and said "We're going to fix it". He didn't.

It's ridiculous how long you have to wait with some games. Unskippable health and safety / warranty screen, anti-piracy logo, licenced sound / video codec technology, publisher, developer, title screen, main menu.

And these days, publishers and developers rarely just have screens, they have "cute" little animated movies.

Health / safety / licences / anti-piracy should be one instantly skippable screen. There should be a maximum of one developer / publisher screen before the title--whoever is left out should just put their name on the title screen. The title screen should be the main menu if possible, which it is in most games.

And with current consoles you also need to manually start the game through the console operating system... and it also takes a few seconds for that operating system to load, which may or may not involve other logos or startup screens.

I love the blizzard games in this regard; the first time you get the logos + intro movie, then for the rest of eternity it boots right into the menu.

EVERY Single EA game on the PC makes you wait through a bunch of logo intros. Most PC games let you skip them...but I haven't found a single EA game yet that lets you.

I actually feel really strongly about this. I remember when I first started playing Playstation the huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge wait time for the logo blew me away.

This is probably unconsciously why I play so much more DS games now. It's like 1.5 seconds and you're into the game.

In the case of The Godfather, and to a lesser regard any other game with celebrities doing voice work, I wonder if it's some contractual stipulation that cut scenes may not be skipped?

I mean they did blow gobs of cash getting this people to do voice work. Pointless and irrelevant to the actual gaming experience as it may be.

If you install the game, it goes to the logo and if you press start, the title screen appears, that isn't slow.

Hey, if Team Ninja can move away from every shitty Capcom inspired game design aspect they've incorporated in Ninja Gaiden with Ninja Gaiden 2; I maybe could be bothered to install it. ;)

Unfortunately I don't expect them to move away from the conventions of trapping you in an enclosed space with bullshit puzzles, and items you cannot obtain without the game being interrupted with a special screen that says - ZOMG! YOU GOT A BLUE POTION LOOKA ME! LOOKA ME!

Just increase the item number in my HUD inventory. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE GAME FLOW!

Give me Dynasty Warriors 6, or give me death! :D
