Future gaming uses for Cloud Compute

How about a real, to scale open world RPG. Where no buildings are locked up, the cities are actually miles apart and it takes actual real days to travel from one part of the world to another. You would have to actually make camp and generally plan for long trips.
This doesn't require a particularly large amount of processing power. It's more a challenge from a content development and game design standpoint. How do you make an exciting game that people play in the spare hour or two of their free time if it takes you literally 20 hours to reach each major destination?
 
really? because your previous posts did sound like you believe that the Crackdown demo used some stuff which is only possible because of this new "cloud thingy".

You are trying way to hard.

What they showed in the Crackdown Demo is only possible if you can outsource all physics calculations. Even a single PC with an i7 couldn't handle what they showed in that demo.

Obviously every device that can be connected to a server network (that's what a cloud is) could do it. But please don't pretend this isn't new and not impressive. There hasn't been a single game that could do stuff like this. Not even by a long shot. RFG was amazing with its destruction but it doesn't even come close to this.

I understand some people lack the ability to undestand the tech behind it and don't see what's really going on there, or what you need to do to make this possible, though.
 
Its promising but I will reserve judgement until crackdown is available to see how it performs, and whether or not it adds to the gameplay or is just a checkbox feature to justify MS's windows 10, Azure cloud computing, and often bogus unlimited power of the cloud/ the power of 20 xbox one marketing speak.

A small clip showing pre-alpha "game play" is nice and all but we need more.

Our games will feature graphics from now on!". "Cloud" is just a buzzword for an established technology and nothing else.

Remember PhysX and how developers struggled for ways to shoehorn it into games? Cloud feels similar.
 
What I said in the other thread:

Man Imagine this cloud stuff being used on something interpersonal like organ simulation in RPGS and shooters. I wonder could this simulate real muscle tears, fatigue, dehydration and other nano processes in games. Finally I could horribly disable enemies in games and it permanently matter (i.e shooting someone in the knee with an arrow in the kidney or a knee (lol) and then they have to suffer the real consequences of that happening). Maybe even a Star Wars game (like Jedi Knight Jedi academy where you could cut off a Sith's limbs and leaving him there.

In addition to what you guys have provided this could very well reduce the strain on consoles freeing up resources for developers to focus on resolution and frame rate. Of course the game would be require always online but that wouldn't be a problem for something like Shadowrun or Titanfall 2.

He didn't say they haven't figured out gameplay... He said the tech demo on display was a demonstration of the physics, not indicative of the overall gameplay experience..

The press was treated to footage from an actual gameplay mission... You can read impressions about it right now if you want...

No one is implying the cloud is some magic new technology... The claim is that the manner in which the cloud is being utilized is new; it's providing an extra, unprecedented amount of physics processing power to a game in real time... And that claim is backed up by live footage of this taking place...
 
Also expect lots of paid DLC to cover the costs of any servers/bandwidth.

Why would their be any additional server costs? The operation and maintenance of azure servers is already paid for thanks to MS' $600mil annual revenue server business...
 
Nothing, because I dont want my games to rely on the cloud so they can end up shutdown and lost forever, or charged a premium.


Yea, I can't think of any gaming applications.


So let's focus on the non-gaming effects of cloud compute over time:

1)Denial
2)Extremely salty gamers.
3)Thread title changes
4)Acceptance

I'm in a joking mood, don't be mad :)

There aren't any new books or stories either, the alphabet always existed, the letters are simply arranged in a different manner, people can be so silly at times lol, new books ha ha what a joke!
 
None of the graphics/destruction stuff is at all interesting to me. The open world simulation, AI, etc., that's where I'd like to see some ground being broken.

I think I came up with the example in another thread of a GTA game where the cops process the evidence of your crimes in realtime, and close in on you until one day you log-in and your safe house is surrounded by SWAT and you've got to fight your way out, and then cover your tracks and set-up a new safe house in another part of the game.

Of course, maybe you could track down the lead detective on your case, Watchdogs-style, and then bribe/kill them to ensure that the evidence never comes to light. But then you're walking down the street and a witness to your original crime recognises you and calls the cops. Weeks/months later.

Once you start tracking the populace at a low level of detail, and retain that info forever, there are really interesting ways that it could impact on gameplay and create whole new ways to encourage creative play, even in a game as silly as GTA.
 
I'd like it to be used in Sea of Thieves for massive stormes, tidal waves, locations, NPCs and enemy AI on islands and ships.

It'd be cool if Fable Legends got a sequel MS would use it. Or, preferably, for MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER capability in Fable IV where all the Heroes can be more than just orbs to other or whatever and can do co-op quests in cool environments with loads of enemy AI and destructability.
 
A good chunk of non interactive stuff like day night cycles, volumetric cloud generation, cosmetic destruction, world simulation (for areas not immediately visible) can be offloaded if the dev chooses to do so. The more that is done on the cloud, the more it's going to cost devs, since each cloud server isn't going to be able to handle hundreds of players. Stuff like this will be feasible only if the dev either chooses to eat the cost as part of their dev budget or transfer that cost to the buyer somehow. Should be interesting to see how much adoption it gets outside of first party studios.
 
No matter how powerful your chips are locally, an external farm will always be able to add to that capacity...

It'll be a while before we see a peice of silicon that can do the kind of processing we've seen in the Crackdown demo at a consumer friendly price.

Well hence the "future" or gaming is to able to do that and more locally. There will come a time where even considering the use of a farm will be absolutely pointless.
 
Crackdown looks good, but I would be careful about asking too much about this stuff. I don`t want it to ruin offline single gaming as we know it, and make consoles with local hardware useless.
 
This concept will die soon other than what Sony is doing streaming full games. I don't see it being practical in the way Crackdown is using it long-term. In fact I will eat a shoe if we see it used in that capacity in more than 5 games this generation. Crackdown is MS trying to justify all the poop that fell out of their mouth in the past two years and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the game ends up suffering from what is probably MS forcing it's implementation.
