Future Shop Canada stores now closed

Yup. I just went to futureshop.ca today to search for dualshock 4 prices and it told me to go to best buy.ca

You buy something at best buy, the mark-up goes to best buy, you buy something at future shop, some of that mark up goes to the commission of the person helping you so he or she can FEED HIS OR HER FAMILY (yes unfortunately people have families to feed, rent or mortgage to pay, gas to buy for the car, diapers for the baby, etc, etc.), good salespeople generally make a bit more at Future Shop.

So yes, that USB cable you buy, those ink cartridges, the laptop, the warranty (if you decide to get it), a part of it goes to pay the guy who did the sale at Future Shop, while most of that goes right to Best Buy when you shop at Best Buy (I'm sure there's a bonus structure but it's night and day), it might be "obnoxious", but they're just trying to make a living, yeah so when you're running around with that $10 USB cable or HP toner and some salesperson is tailing you and asking if he can help you with cashing it out, he's not trying to be "obnoxious", he's just trying to make that lousy $2 spiff on it (sad but every dollar counts, you return the damn cable the next day and it gets taken right back out of his pay), good luck getting any kind of service if their performance is not directly linked to their compensation, one day you might find that when you walk into a store, there are no human beings in the building and nobody for you to talk to because you like companies that don't like paying people to talk to people.

doesn't change the fact it's a style of customer service that completely turns people off. if i was ever buying something truly substantial, a TV or something, I would never go to a commission place for help out of fear they'll just try and sell me the most expensive items to get the biggest take.

I work at the service centre in Brampton ON, I have to check to see if the Futureshop across from us is closing down. THere isn't a BestBuy anywhere near except for the one at Bramalea City Centre

  1. Retail is a fairly low margin business
  2. Retail business is getting harder for certain items (electronics...) due to competition with online retailers, especially Amazon
  3. Retail in Canada is heavily dependent on importing products, which has gotten a lot more expensive due to the depreciation of the Canadian dollar
  4. Any increase in prices due to CDN dollar changes drives customers away from purchasing stuff
  5. Canada looks like its about to enter another recession, that's even less money for spending on luxury goods
Canada is still in the recession of 2009.

I got confused with the FAQ

I have a FS item to return within the 30 day limit and no Best Buy here with this one turning into a BB slim.
If there's no BB around then it will be re-branded. Go to your FS and check for the sign on the door.

Went in this morning for the Best Buy meeting as they delivered the news to us before it hit the press. Makes sense since it's redundant to have a Futureshop and Best Buy right next to each other. Helps with brand awareness and advertising.

Best Buy and Future Shop are basically the same company and they're most likely told to push the same products Best Buy wants to promote for the best margin, except future shop sales probably might ask you a few more questions to hopefully get you the right thing so someday when you want to buy a washer or big flat screen TV you'll go back to the same salesperson whereas the guy at best buy probably won't care about trying to cross-sell you.

I have games like MGS5 preordered at 39.99 through FS, and the MSRP is now 74.99. I'm going to be so bummed if preorders all get cancelled.

Good to know that my gift cards will work at best buy.ca though.
This. I still have many pre-orders like MGS at 39.99$, Batman, Witcher, Uncharted etc. Fuck them if they don't "transfer" my orders to Best Buy.

Re-branded cause there's no Bestbuy close by.

I'm not sure how this will impact the BestBuy that's supposed to move in across the street in the new Stockyards complex. This might explain the delay, though.

It's beginning to sound like we can have a huge GAF meet at the Stockyards one of these days...

Has anyone bought a game recently at Futureshop? I bought Bloodborne on Tuesday and on my receipt it says I get $20 gaming credit on any new game purchase of $59.99 till end of April 30th.

Anyone think or know if Bestbuy will honour that?

BB IS TAKING ON ALL FS ORDERS!!!

Seems nobody is even reading the thread.

Glad to know the E3 pre-orders are safe! I also have Kingdom Hearts III and FFXV pre-ordered through them. I'm printing out every single one along with them saying they will honour the existing pre-orders just in case I have to prove it later on.

Sucks for the employees but having future shop and best buy as identical stores both online and in person didn't make much sense.

6. Canadian businesses rely on old business models, do not innovate, are complacent, are ignorant about the Canadian market, and fail to adapt to or too slow to make any changes.

I work around there, but traffic fucking sucks.

Wow. RIP Future Shop.

It was always weird how there were Best Buy and Future Shops so close to each other.

I wonder what will happen to the FS near me. It won't be converted since there is a BB across the street but there is also a Walmart, Canadian Tire etc nearby.

I hope my "Tekken 3DS" order fillers have dropped off the system by now. I don't need those carrying over to my Best Buy account.

All of the Best Buys are located in the outskirts of Edmonton. They better hurry up and get the downtown FS location opened under BB.

Might as well combine the US and Canada now as well. Disgusting how American corporations and retailers have signalled the death knell for Canadian retailers. If they can't buy out Canadian ones and shut them down, they drive them out of business. I worked at Best Buy, functioned the same as Future Shop, except for the fact pay was non commission. I still had to shill the same Monster Cable crap, act like a salesman, but would only get the minimum base pay. That's probably what they're going to do to Future Shop as well. Future Shop has way better brand recognition here in Canada. Oh well. I wonder when Home Depot will effectively buy Rona, or when Costco will buy Loblaws and close down or convert all Superstores.

Whether it's fast food, retail, automobiles, television, music, there is very little Canadian owned or Canadian operated anything left.

If this is for real, and I have trouble believing it, I can definitely understand why they closed.

They normally make more money in the home theatre department, there's nothing wrong with the compensation, it's not like they do nothing and get paid a ton of commission, they would have to do a lot of follow up with customers and answer questions, some of the home theatre guys I know used to help people set up equipment at home, it's a lot of warranties and big items, obviously the guy working at the games/CD/DVD/Bluray department is making peanuts, the successful ones in the big items departments like home theatre and appliances are very organized and know their stuff really well, and they do their own merchandising in terms of making sure everything is sparkling clean, it obviously makes more sense for Best Buy paying people peanuts to sell the same thing.

I was at the Future Shop just down the road a few days back, and traded in a few games (which, in retrospect, is odd that they were still doing trades if they knew they were closing). They had two employees running four different cashes, running around and getting frustrated. Morale seemed low, too. But it struck me as odd when I first heard the news, that there was no week-long announcement, but just "hey, we're closing it all today". But every time I'm in a Future Shop it was very quiet, no more than five to ten customers at a time at the location I go to frequently. And since there's a Best Buy a few stores away in the shopping centre, there won't be any converging.

The downward spiral of our Canadian economy continues. First the games go up in price and then the people who sell the games go out of business (because people are spending less).

Games sales doesn't really make much money for retailers, everything is so heavily discounted that the only thing they make money on is used games sales.

Fuck this economy. Futureshop is one of my favorite stores. Got my first computer there, and always they have good sales on a lot of stuff...

Yep, out of the choice between Future Shop and Best Buy, I always went Future Shop. I always liked it there more.
