G.E.C.K. - Fallout 3 Editor coming out December!

Is it wrong to be excited by bother the editor and the DLC?

I have an Athlon 64 XP 4600+, 2 gigs of RAM, and an AMD HD4850. The CPU is the question mark. I am able to run the game at 1280x800 on Ultra High quality with settings maxed out. I was quite surprised when the game set that for me, to be honest! It looks and runs great, and performs much better than I thought. Good job by Betheseda on this.
Well, getting a new CPU is not a problem, really. Thanks for the hint!

I'm really looking forward to what they end up doing. It's obvious from their interviews that they were very gung-ho (passionate) about creating this Fallout game, even more so than their Elder Scrolls series it seemed.

consider this one of (if not the) obligatory first bitching posts of this thread. I expect all PC gamers in this thread to salt their margaritas with my console bitter tears:

I actually don't mind exclusive games. I think it's good for competition, gives each system more of an individual 'identity', and all that jive. I do, however, have a pretty big problem with exclusive DLC, which benefits some people and punishes others- all owners of the same product. In a business sense I can see it- you make a title cross-platform, reap the benefits from all directions, then ink a deal with one for more content and make even more money. I guess I just get frustrated for being on the crap end of the deal this time- but even if things were the other way around, I'd feel bad for people who bought this game and aren't getting/won't get the chance to expand this awesome game.
Granted, some of the blame falls on me for not doing the proper research and purchasing the version set to be beefed up over the course of the next year (I own both a PS3 and 360; chose the PS3 because I prefer the controls), but I still think it's a lousy practice.

Bethesda would have my money (as they did with Shivering Isles) in an instant, but I refuse to rebuy the game on another system just for supplemental material that everyone who bought the game should have the opportunity to experience.

This, along with 'already on the disc' micro-transactions (SCAMCO, I'm looking at you), are two of the ugliest new additions to gaming, in my opinion.

Fallout 3 is definitely a keeper for me, so I just have to hope, like with Oblivion, PS3 owners get this stuff somewhere down the line. :(

the G.E.C.K. sounds freakin' awesome for PC owners, though. Lucky devils. :D

I love the G.E.C.K (great name for the program!) and the DLC missions sound great but I just want them to uncap the levels. I lost all interest in playing now that I've hit the cap and I haven't finished the game yet! :(

Can't see why not, unless Bethesda says so otherwise, a game being on Steam never stopped me from instaling mods or whatever on them.
I'm just paranoid because I saw so many people talking about that back around release date. :|

The reason people are sweating the Steam version is that the digital distribution versions of Oblivion had a different executable than the boxed versions, and that executable prevented several mods from working. I do not know if there was ever a workaround developed.

I replaced the Titan Quest executable on Steam with an unofficial one and it works fine. I'm assuming that maybe on older games they don't have the same protections in place?

Wow. Totally owned. :lol

Maybe now I'll pick up FO3.

Dude, you should've given Fallout 3 a shot even before this announcement. The vanilla game is very good, much better than Oblivion. I personally can't wait to see what sort of stuff we get from the modding community, given that Fallout 3 is a much stronger skeleton of a game than the heavily modded Oblivion was.

That, and it's not clear what happens if you've got an imported version on Steam and it tries to update for your region. That's potential trouble for regions where the censored versions are sold.

Pittsburgh's outlying topography is a trillion times more interesting and varied than Washington DC's. I hope the DLC encompasses a large enough portion of the city to propertly convey this.

I really doubt it's going to be anything bigger than one of the typical towns in the game, as I think this is much more likely to be Knights of the Nine-type DLC, rather than something like Shivering Isles.

Oh, man, I just realized! "The Pitt"! Anyone remember Marvel's old New Universe?

one thing I have to say about this.

FALLOUT's best merit is its contained universe + story that fills it out. Having "user mods"... will break this illusion. I loved Fallout 3 but this news really doesn't excite me at all. More barrenness to trek through, its not like the retail version doesn't have enough of that.

That would be colossally disappointing. Why bother to set it in a different region if they're only going to represent a microcosm of it that doesn't differ signifigantly from the game's original setting?

100% bullshit, sorry, but it's just not true. Mods never broke anything if you didn't install them.

What? Even the old *cough*real*cough* Fallout games had fan fixes and mods.

Explain exactly how adding an incredible, amazing looking weather system (featuring acid rain, lightning, etc), better textures, lighting, smarter AI, a more diverse selection of enemies, a better UI, and additional weapons and armor breaks the illusion created by the game?

That's the dumbest thing I've ever read, sorry. :P

a great game like fallout can only be made greater by more support and content.

i hope to play through the copy i bought off of steam, someday, when i have more time.. :D

Your guess is as good as mine. Remember that Shivering Isles didn't come out until a year after Oblivion did, so I think it was a pretty big undertaking. A section of Pittsburgh to explore through would be amazing, especially given how well-realized the D.C. ruins were, but I don't think they're going to that extent. I think the most we'll see as far as Pitt goes is a couple of new locations with several new quests and characters tied to it, if Knights of the Nine is any indication (I never played KotN myself, but just by reading its features list).

Hm...wonder how long it takes for someone to recreate Fallout 1 and 2 in this engine...

Not only that, but I'm sure we're going to be able to play through every major city in the US by the end of 2009, at least because of user mods.

This is the same type of editor as Oblivion right? So we'll start seeing new character models, new weapons, better graphics ect?

Continues the adventure past the main quest

How? I thought the game ends when you finish the main quest. If you get this DLC does it just keep going or something?

I hope someone on PC and just use the DLC from Xbox and convert it over.

Fuck DLC and that exclusive bullshit, they probably dont wanna offer it on PC because of piracy.

Actually, it is being offered on the PC :), which makes the PS3 the only system not getting it, not sure why that is though.

cool, I can't wait to see what new stuff people come up with :)

I also was wishing they would have done something a little more with Commonwealth
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Commonwealth that could have been cool DLC

Yeah. And maybe an expansion that explains
what happened to the people in Vault 101 after the ending. Will they hear the news or just conceal themselves forever?

Butch goes to Rivet City.
I've also seen some other stuff about
Amata meeting with the Enclave on the Fallout Wiki, but never encountered it.

You've obviously never experienced modded Morrowind or Oblivion. If you had, you wouldn't be saying such monumentaly stupid things.

If you're playing the PC version, in the console:

setgs iMaxCharacterLevel ### - Sets the maximum level that your character can reach through experience gain. Replace the ### with the desired maximum level.

Lots of fun to be had with turning off collision too.

I was genuinely worried Bethesda wasn't going to release the editor for a good long time, out of fear of adult content related mods getting them in trouble with the ESRB again. Glad to see it'll be out so relatively soon.

That's only if you complete 'Trouble on the Homefront' in one particular way - by overloading the water chip and making the Vault evacuate. If you complete it any of the other two ways you're banished from the Vault and they seal themselves away again.

You can do that? I
convinced the overseer to let them out. He anointed Amata the new overseer and then I was banished. I still found Butch in Rivet City.

I have a Macbook Pro from June 2007. Is there any chance I can run Fallout 3 at all? I've invested 30+ hours in the Xbox 360 version, will love the DLC, but want to experience the user made content!
