Valve brought Steam to Linux in February, and the platform now has 198 games. Newell has previously promised to unveil a Linux-based "Steam box" to compete against living room gaming consoles sometime this year, and his company has updated the Steam software to work better on TVs. While he didn't specifically mention the Steam box today, Newell hinted at an announcement next week.

"Next week we're going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux into the living room," Newell said.

A few other tidbits in the story but this is the biggest thing

Here's a recording of the presentation he gave. Be aware that this a capture of the stream on somebody's desktop, so its not the best quality (pauses due to buffering, windows popping into view every now and then). Its very interesting.

As you can see by my avatar I'm already a part of the choir, but I do feel that fracturing computing into several incompatible closed platforms is a bad thing for consumers. Its good to see a company throw its weight behind Linux.

As per Valve Time, "next week" actually means "one week and three days" or "nine months". :p

Can you imagine:

Half Life 3 Steam Box exclusive. Launches against XBONE and PS4. Compatible with your entire Steam Library.

Haha, if only.

STEAMBOX IS COMING...

huh hardware... steam box... ????
I wonder what the price would be... hope its not expensive like the piston

Piston was mostly pricey because of its incredibly small form factor. I'm personally hoping this is more like the Alienware X51.

I've been holding off buying a gaming PC for this. Maybe that sounds crazy to some, but I'm hoping they release something more streamlined and designed for PC gaming. Maybe it won't be either, but their directive on this seems to be what I'm looking for.

so is it safe to assume that left 4 dead 3 is going to be exclusive to whatever hardware they reveal ? that would be incredibly disappointing.

if its Linux it might as well be another console.

Though a downloadable steam only Linux distro from vavle would be cool.

Very unlikely. Valve is an "omnivore" like Ubisoft in that they want their games on every platform where it's practical to release them. The purpose of a Steambox would be to widen the Steam ecosystem and get Big Picture Mode into more living rooms, not to create the same type of console as MS/Sony and compete on the same terms.

Seems like something that could happen :)

HL3 wouldn't be exclusive, and having the entire Steam library would only be possible if the Steambox ran Windows, which it probably won't.

Half-Life isn't relevant anymore, not with Valve's current business strategy. I.e f2p and let the fans make us money.

Very excited to hear more about the Steambox. Just hoping it's not Linux only. I'll probably pass on the device if that's the case.

What it they had something like WINE that allowed Windows games to work on the SteamBox?

It would have to be built into each game to be the most optimized even then it would still run well below the native windows version of the game.

Not happening if its Linux based.

Valve's "SteamBox" will be Linux-based, but more enterprising users can install Windows if they so desire, and OEMs are also free to use it as the default option in their offerings.

So now I got to be on the look at for Valve news next week? Since we haven't had news on the Steam Box in some time, I hope it's been revamped to be more than something like the Piston.

Steam cloud

Maybe. On a home network. Like the Nvidia Shield but it's a Linux based thin client connected to your TV that can stream your windows games from your desktop and has just enough performance to play Linux native games on respectable settings. I would be interested.

If I could snap my fingers and have Linux be the default OS for gaming, I would in a heartbeat but I can only imagine a real world transition to be slow, painful and scary.

Gabe has explicitly said that devices like this are a planned type of "Steambox."

I can't say I quite understand what appeal a Linux gaming PC would have but OK.

a truly open OS moving forward is a better solution than windows

even assuming the worst theories about microsoft getting rid of the legacy desktop entirely prove to be untrue it's still apparent that they do not have the best interests of the pc gaming community at heart

That would be horrific. Abandoning their PC audience would alienate millions of their current customers.

Hey Gabe, you probably could have gotten to this point a year ago if you didn't fire everyone working on it. Just sayin'...

My "not a box" comment was just me thinking that Valve will try to enter and compete int the Apple TV/Vita TV and not the Xbox One/PS4 space. I honestly haven't payed close attention to any recent talk about Steambox. But I'm intrigued.

There's some indication that they were working on hardware, but that doesn't necessarily mean Steambox and only Steambox.

those people were working on a vr hardware platform which the company decided was inferior to solutions like oculus rift

gabe let them take the tech they'd developed with them and start their own company to finish it
