GAF - Best Graphics for this gen!

So with the release of the X360, it's become pretty evident that the PS2/Xbox/GC generation is winding up; with few new unannounced releases for those systems, it's probably not that premature to start having a discussion on this. Given that the GAF collective is at its heart a graphics whore, it should be an intresting look at what's come to pass and maybe what will be in store for next gen.

- PC games from the year 2000 to 2005 are considered part of this generation.
- You can include games for current gen consoles that are still on their way; if they take top honors, they'll be marked as still unreleased, and granted top honors with the top released game.
- Nintendo DS and PSP games are also open for consideration. Even the GBA is, if it GAFfers feel some exceptional release is upto par for been considered greatest graphics in some category.
- Feel free to posts screenshots of games, but try to keep the size down; no larger than 800x600 I'd say. Larger images should be linked.
- If you want to preserve the bold tags, quote my post and delete the irrelevant text.

Best Overall graphics for a game:
(Overall best looking game, period*)
*If you're considering a PC game; the target rig should be a high-end gaming computer for 2002 (9700Pro + P4 2.8 GHz); in order to balance the overall performance advantage that the PC has continued to accrue for the last 3 years.

Best Overall graphics for a console:
(Ignoring technical specifications, which console has consistently seen the best looking titles?)

Best technical graphics for a console game:
(Could be bad art; but the technology that powers that art? Is it good? Is it great? Does it make the bad art good art?)

It's Graphics of the generation (2000-2005)... and I feel that art design/direction has more merit to more people than just technical graphics alone, such that they'll be a pretty reasonable and fair amount that vote for console games as overall best.

But I did seperate the consoles from PCs when talking about technical graphics.

Also, feel free to skip categories which you're not sure about, like these 2 guys.

some of the best looking games this gen are coming out next year Zelda TP, FFXII, KHII, Devil Summoner, VP2 for example.

this gen isn't over yet IMO.

Get this: PC are suppossed to be superior to consoles in the later years. I got my old 9700 Pro before the Xbox or GC even came out. It handily outperformed them. The 7800 series came out well before xbox 360 came. No need to be rude and force your flawed point across.

If you really want to do it this way its better to just leave pc's out.

Well, if I really wanted to be fair, I might've said, limited it to GF2MX and 1.2ghz processor for a mid-range year 2000 machine. But you can't really play any of the games these days for it.

For best PC game technically category... it doesn't need to be arbitarily limited. Obviously the current best of PC technology has already surpassed next gen stuff like the X360 (in some ways), so it's not exactly fair to match it up against technology from 4-5 years ago.
I could've maybe gone with; best technical engine/graphics given the platform limitations... but that might've been even more confusing.
That said, it's intresting to see what's currently the best for PC as well technically; is it HL2? Is it King Kong + hires pack? Doom3? Battlefield 2?
Hell, you don't even need to put something down if you don't want to. It's just another category.
As for rude... you don't think calling something stupid out of left field, then following it up with a snide remark like "Console Age indeed", instead of an explanation, is a little rude?

Actually, I dunno about that...

To me, whether or not a game impresses on a technical level has as much to do with the game itself as it does with the hardware. I feel that many PC games are poorly optimized and are simply using features that newer video cards have made standard. Put HDR lighting in a PC game, and I'm not going to be particularly amazed. Do it on the PS2, however, and THEN I'll be impressed.

Considering the massive difference in hardware, I think the consoles keep up shockingly well. Some of the most beautiful games in recent times are not PC games, afterall.

You know what would be impressive. If the PS2 could actually do real AA. :lol

In recent times all PS2 games look ugly technically. People playing on PS2 dont play for graphics. Look at DMC3 for instance. The game is really ugly but it has nice style, that doesnt mean its going to win graphics of the year awards as technical graphics matter too. 1+1=2 not 1+0=2 this is why graphics interest on the consoles has been muted as of late. Before we used to have GT4 in every thread. But thats muted now because pc games have taken over.

Yeah, you're way too opinionated on this subject, so there's no point in trying to argue anything here.

I do find it bizarre how you could call certain recent "current gen" console games "ugly", though.

I mean, you have ALL this technology and you get THIS...

Far Cry was good for its time but not for character designs or story ;)

Since you managed to post an ugly screenshot of Far Cry why not post some fot he good ones. Its not even one fo the best looking pc games anymore.

RE4 would get my nod on consoles since its does large variety of stuff so well. GC version. PS2 version is hard to play for me because of the graphics :P

Best Technical Graphics for PS2: Metal Gear Solid 3
Best Technical Graphics for Xbox: Hmm.. this one is hard. Conker is definitely up there.
Best Technical Graphics for GC: Metroid Prime (RE4 gets close but MP is the better overall package..)

Best overall graphics for MMORPG: MMORPGs looks just awful most of the time. Gotta go with WoW.. its not technically impressive by any means but looks good thanks to its art direction.

At least we all can agree on something (RE4).

PS2 games in general are very technically advanced. It's the (poor) image quality I think you're referring to, which many (not all) PS2 games exhibit. Burnout Revenge is amazing in that regard.

Nope. But it'll take more than HDR lighting to change my mind. At least at this point (haven't finished it yet).

I'm technically illiterate. I don't know how many poliwags a defibrullator makes. I think bump mapping is plotting to take cuts in line... I'll keep just to art:

Features much more than just HDR. Its an enhanced version of HL2 and HL2 is still one of the best looking games right now.

DS/PSP aren't "this gen" handhelds... unless you'd consider 360 to be a "this gen" console. You'll all have to start over and pick from GBA/NGage/mobile stuff.
