GAF, I need your help! PSP or 3DS?

why ask random people on a forum bro? Just look at which has games you want..Christ, the only reason you should be buying one is if a game has caught your fancy. I mean seriously. And why such a random choice between the seriously outdated psp and the brand new 3ds.

We may shed a light on games that he didn't notice or take seriously before, or give a concentrated area of info at least. If people are afraid of asking and discussing things like this then what's the point of a forum?

PSP is worth buying if you skipped it, 3DS is worth buying because it's getting good games and building a solid library. I don't see anything wrong with him wanting opinions on both, personally.

I have a 3DS. Can't find anything I'm excited to play on it except SMT IV and the new SSB.

As for the console port comment towards the Vita, the 3DS feels like that too. At least everything from Nintendo does (Super Mario Bros 3DS or whatever the hell it's called seems exactly like the Wii version.)

And I'm gonna be the one to say it, do you have an iOS device? Unless you NEED your standard franchises, iOS is a fantastic platform. Touch only controls may take you some getting used to, but the games are solid and cheap.

yeah i agree. i have plenty of gba and ds games, but only ocarina of time 3D and nsmb2 on the 3DS (and smash bros whenever it comes out). ive played my 3DS a lot more than the vita. the vita is extremely nice hardware but the serious lack of games and a major push from sony kills it for me personally. at least nintendo seems to care about the 3DS..

i do have to admit though. i never played my 3DS since i completely beat nsmb2 a few weeks ago, and before that, i didnt even touch it since i bought ocarina of time 3D last year along with the 3DS (also it was with my friend but even still i wouldnt have played it).

yep, i have an iphone 4S 64GB and play a lot of games on it. the iphone is how i discovered phoenix wright surprisingly, and ended up getting it on the ds. also have all 3 consoles, pc/mac, etc.

:(

Well from this thread I discovered the flaws of the 1000, the fact that PSP has a huge RPG library, and that the PSP has also very good fighting games. I guess most of these could have been done with a little research, but I also wanted opinions and past experiences and such.

If you enjoyed the Tenkaichi series of DBZ, I'd strongly suggest picking up Tenkaichi Tag as it uses the exact same gameplay style and is really polished and nice compared to other DBZ titles on the PSP.

I would've said just go with a cheapo PSP and wait for 3DS to mature a bit buuuuut, you won't be able to talk about new 3DS games on gaf :| If that's important to you, go fo 3DS. It's not like a PSP won't be dirt cheap for a while anyway, probably only set you back a couple of new games' worth of cash anyway.

Oh, if you're going PSP then a an RPG you need is Breath of Fire. USA has 4 and Europe's got 3 (weird I know), but both are really good. Great mix of sprites and 3d, brilliant ost's and pleasant, non-angsty stories. Just a recommendation!

PSP. You already own a DS, and are a fan of a genre of games that 3DS is sorely lacking in. It's cheap, has a great library, and 3DS will still be there once you get through the PSP games you want to play. Go for a 3000 model for the better screen. If you can, try to buy an extended battery life pack from Sony. I don't believe those are manufactured any more so that might cost some coin. On the subject of games, I suggest going digital where you can afford it, and feel it's a game you want to play in the future. It's a good way to create a library if you ever do want to get a Vita down the road.

It will be impossible to find a brand new PSP for a reasonable amount within the next 1-2 years, I bet.

That and the PSP has a ton of good games that you can acquire cheaply and always have something good to play for a good while.

I just disagree with your stance that my recommendation isn't valid because I like Kirby. You don't want a 3DS, that's fine, you'll be surprised but other people might.

I do own a 3ds I made an error on that last post I meant to say I owned every Nintendo system released in America except for the Virtual Boy which I did want at the time, but thankfully never bought. My fault.
I also like Kirby, Especially Kirby Superstar. One of my all time favorite platformers.

Yes, I do own a DS. Something I love about the DS is how many RPG games it has, does the PSP have a large library of RPG games, too?

Also, I'm sure about the PSP, I'm not looking for a Vita right now, so yeah : P

As for the model, I had a PSP 1000 in mind, but is it really bad compared to the later models?

Then get a PSP.Exclusive 3DS games don't even come close (for now) to PSP's huge library.

Personally i'm satisfied with my 2000.

Depends on the games you're looking for.

I still have/had all the handheld systems except the 3DSXL. If you already have the DS and its RPGs, but you want more RPGs, the PSP is a great system. Other than that, I don't think it's worth getting a PSP over a 3DSXL if you're not into RPGs.

That's just me though. It all depends on what games you like and want to play. Without the RPGs, the PSP is no better than the Vita, in my opinion.

It's not only the RPGs.The PSP gives him access to a big library of classic PS1 games too.

You say you don't want vita but the games look better on it.
Maybe you will use it for homebrew?

Game library is a bit bigger too since you already have a DS.

Have you ever even played a Vita, or are you just part of the "hate it because it isn't a 3DS" club?
The guy asked a simple question. PSP or 3DS? No Vita there. Maybe the fact is you love it too much, not that I hate it at all...

PSP now, 3DS later is what I'd recommend. Cheaper games, homebrew, bigger library.

Oh and I'd recommend getting any other model than 1000. 2000, 3000 and E1000 are all good. GO too if you are planning to go full digital.

Well depends what you want, a system with a larger existing library of good game but little time left or a system with a smaller backlog but still has a future ahead of it.

the psp now, i had a blast with the games and homebrew it offered. looking around here, most of the umds are pretty damn cheap too.

the 3ds later, if the software library continues to build

I'm honestly not sure if the OP realizes that the Vita can play PSP games (digital download only), and make them look amazing as well.

OP -- get a Vita. They are on sale this week at Target. $249.99 for the Wi-Fi model with a free $50 gift card. That effectively makes the Vita $199.99.

Well... fuck. I thought there wasn't a huge difference but longer UMD load times turns me off instantly. Guess I gotta search again. Thank you for this, though, very helpful.

Noo.... my DS is sexy dark blue, plus I think the 3DS doesn't look that good with DS games, no?

Actually, no. If you opt to hack it, you simply jack up the processing speed in the VSH menu, and I guarantee you that my PSP (a 1000 model) will load just as fast, if not faster than any other PSP on the market. Though that consumes a bit more battery life, I've never had a problem with the default UMD load times, so I rarely ever overclock.

This thread is convincing me that I gave up on the PSP too soon. Time to start bargain hunting.

I had no idea Sony released an extended battery pack. That just blows my mind.

It depends on what you like to play. RPGs and older PS1 games? PSP. If you like Kingdom Hearts you'll eventually want both. Birth by Sleep is easily one of the best games on the system, and the cost of admission is reasonable. 3DS offerings at the moment are pretty slim, but it has a few great games that will keep you busy for a while.

Yeah, it comes in handy too. But things have never been the same since they revamped their batteries so that they couldn't be modified. I'm still not sure how it works, even though I made one, but code can actually be written onto the batteries to turn it into a jigkick battery. (At least the old ones) I haven't seen the extended life batteries since.

Summary of the thread thus far:

DS vs. PSP = DS wins

3DS (incl. perfect DS backwards-compatibility) vs. PSP = 3DS wins

Future outlook:

3DS vs. PSP = 3DS wins

I own all three, by the way. I like playing (and usually owning) every gaming device out there. I've recently decided to change my ways though. Better to own one or two platforms and get the absolute best out of them than owning them all, never really getting deep into anything and building up a huge backlog in the process.

PSP easy

get all of the first party classics, the third party gems, and enjoy one of the finest systems sony has ever made

their best last gen system and the second best handheld of all time

Let's see...

PSP can play every single game from from the Atari 2600 up to the PSone after 5 minutes of a modder going to work. (that's thousands upon thousands of games)

The 3DS can play 3DS and DS games. (Still, a metric ton of games, but nowhere near close to the PSP's library.)

This is all based on opinion, so no console really wins. If you're just going by backwards compatibility, then the PSP would win by a landslide.

Wait wait wait ...

You're saying - buy a PSP then mod it and PIRATE a bunch of games you don't own, and you'll have a better platform than 3DS??

How does that make any sense to someone who wants the complete LEGITIMATE (not to mention LEGAL) platform experience???

And what's the use of a PSP if it requires you to be a CRIMINAL to get the most out of it????

Quick question: When I had a PSP 3000 it was kind of pain to hack and keep hacked. Has the situation improved or are you better off trying to track down a 2000?

PSP because of the emulation.

Even if you don't care for the emulation... PSP still wins. Until someone finds a way remove the Region Lock, then we'll see.

Yea... he never said that. Stop trying to get people in trouble

This is fucking stupid and you should feel fucking stupid :lol :lol

sorry for being such a CRIMINAL

All PSPs (including 3k and Go) can be soft-hacked (meaning every time you do a hard turn-off you need to run a program which loads in 5 seconds and just stays on your memory card).

It works for everything and it's as easy as it could possibly get.

Cool, thanks.

Not sure how is it any pain to hack? its no more than hard than anything else you doing in the day

What part of past tense do you not understand? What part of my question necessitated your opinion on the matter?

Yeah, get a psp 3k.

Vita is nice but a lot of great psp games are still/ will never be on psn.

3ds is nice but ill still wait for some hot bundles and for more RPGs cuz that seems like your thing.

You're not NJShadow. Why are you replying to my post?
i'm replying to your post because this is an open discussion forum, and i feel you're unjustly jumping on another user?
He has THOUSANDS of games ready to play on his PSP, by the way. You only have one, it seems. Congrats on owning the cartridge though.
he said he downloaded thousands of games? where? so far as i could tell, he simply said that the psp COULD (which it can!) play thousands of games.

1. This forum doesn't endorse piracy.

2. No one ever said he downloaded thousands of games.

Get the vita man seriously. All the great rpgs from psp and ps1 are available on psn. The vita is amazing hardware too, it makes the 3ds and 3ds xl look like a cheap toy.

1. this forum also doesn't endorse witch hunts!

2. you, in response to one of his posts, posited that "it requires you to be a CRIMINAL to get the most out of it????". i posted a response to show that no, you don't need to be a criminal to enjoy emulation, and you responded that he has "THOUSANDS of games", which, if not an explicit accusation, seemed to me to be an insinuation that he did.

Actually, I'm in the same boat that he is. I own every single Genesis game that I have on my PSP, yes, the original cartridges. That pic he posted of Metroid almost had me fall backwards, because it's absolutely true. While others can have differing opinion, if you already own an original copy of a game, there's no harm in bringing to a console that would have otherwise never seen it. No crime here, bud. ;)

Did I say the PSP was capable of thousands upon thousands of emulated games? Yes. Do I have thousands and thousands? Absolutely not. Are you cray cray? =P

EDIT: Additionally, I do not support piracy, as I've never seen the appeal. I was bouncing off the walls after I realized that I could take my entire Genesis collection with me on the go, and THAT was the only draw for me. Well that, and some of the decent homebrew games. (PSP Revolution being my fave!)

Well, the problem is, I'm not just into the Vita that much, I can see the huge potential, though, but downloading games just doesn't sound like something I want to have to use frequently, Waiting for a day when the game I want comes out as downloadable doesn't appeal to me so much when I can just order it and play it on a PSP. But you said it makes them look amazing? Does it actually enhance the way it looks? Or does it run through a filter? I am also very interested in the downloadable PS1 classics, are they on the Vita too?

You know, the modding does sound really interesting, don't kill me, but it's just great to see these things and what people can do. Is it still really bad if I already own the game? You might go "Why would you want to emulate this game if you already have it?" Well, I might just enjoy the bigger screen, controls, and portability of it. It sounds great and I don't think you can just straight up call someone a criminal just because they want to play the games they already own in a much different way and therefore a much different experience.
IMO
