GAF, I require your sagely advice re: new console / PC

Semi long story short, I had a high end gaming PC which gave me issues, and frustrated me to the point of selling it. By doing so I gave up close to 300 digital games, but I was annoyed enough to not be overly concerned about it at the time. I then bought a One X because Gamepass gave me access to a lot of my digital library without having to rebuy games. I also successfully pre-ordered a Series X, the idea being I sell the One X when it arrives.

However, I cannot tell a lie, I really miss my PC (the non frustrating parts) and, quite frankly, I'd like to play all of my old games again. But I sold my PC desk, chair, monitors and peripherals. I don't really have anywhere to put a desktop currently, without quite a bit of hassle. Maybe order a gaming laptop, instead?

So what do I do? Go all in on another desktop and cancel the Series X? Gaming laptop and cancel the Series X? Or desktop / laptop and keep the Series X? Doesn't help that it's a bad time to go PC with all of the new technology about to release. I imagine 20 series PC's will be getting a rather large discount in the near future.

Can't decide whether it would be better to get a mid level PC and play all big future titles on Series X, or go high end PC and cancel the Series X pre-order. Money is not really an issue.

If you're interested in PC, just get a PC and play it from comfy couch. The Series X is not going to be offering much to PC gamers as all "exclusives" are PC day one.
If I was going the desktop route I would be all in. I ran my old PC through my 4K TV and wasn't overly impressed. Just building a desk and routing cables would be a pain in the ass, which is why I was leaning towards a laptop.

Cancel everything. Wait until there are games that aren't ports.

Random games crashing. Hours and hours of trouble shooting, replacment AIO, RAM, took it to an expert, and it still occurred. It's all coming back to me....

Ah well HW issues are a bitch. Thought it might be software/config problems.

Maybe buy from somewhere like www.pcspecialist.co.uk, they will charge you more over the costs of the parts separately ofc but you get an extended warranty and any issues: they pick it up from your home, fix it and send it back. No hassle for you.

I don't know what sort of PC you had but I don't see why you would be impressed with console, or what you are looking for.

I've actually bought from them before. I had no issues but my brother had a problem with them.

Get a mid-range laptop and keep the series X if you can't wait.

Also, out of curiosity, what games did you play that caused the crashes? I rarely have these sort of problems with my rig that i often see people complaining about, and i always wonder if its just a matter of what games i play.

I cancelled the Series X and stuck with my PC. You would be perfectly fine with a budget PC. Get a Ryzen 5 3600 and a RX 5700 XT for the time being and get all the other parts as cheap as possible. The way I see it, I'd need some kind of computer to work on either way so it was worth the extra money

It started on CoD and became more and more common. And it was happening on Steam, GOG, Blizzard, the lot. But a game like The Sinking City never crashed once. This is why it was so difficult to diagnose.

In the end I suspect it was the CPU.

Do you mean CoD: Warzone? Which other games did this kind of thing happen? Another thing, are you the type of player that plays MP at unlocked frame-rate?

I was EXTREMELY impressed with my 1440p monitor. There was lag using my TV, though. i7 8700, 1080ti, 32gb RAM.

Well, you're getting lag on your Xbox on your TV too. So either it's a problem for both or a problem for none.

I think you need to decide what you want. The Series X is a convenient all in one box like all consoles, and will give you an experience that is like an upgraded One X. If you are happy with the One X then go with that, but obviously it's a console that can only play console games. From a "power" POV, your old PC was in the ballpark of these new consoles.

If you want to play your old PC games, and if you want to exceed wht the consoles can do, then think about PC.

get a high end pc, enjoy the freedom and surfeit of content

if something goes wrong w / your next build, rma whatever fails and stress the system until it's stable

Black Ops 4, Tower of Time, Forza Horizon 4, Shadow Warrior 2, Quantum Break.....basically everything at the end. Apart from The Sinking City.

But we're getting off topic. If I was sure that the Series X would play pretty much everything at 60fps going forward I'd keep that, and get a mid range gaming laptop when the prices come down. A 1660ti or RTX 2060, probably.

The lag was waaaaaaaaaayyyyy worse on the PC. I was using Steam big picture and Kingdom Come Deliverance was lagging by a couple of seconds. Very off putting.

And obviously I need to decide. That's what this thread is for. To garner opinions and advice from you beautiful people.

I think its important discussing this, especially if you do plan on getting a new PC. Crashing at every game could've been faulty GPU for example, running things at unlocked framerate sometimes causes these crashes too (don't know if you did that though).

GPU was fine, I stress tested the shit out of it, as did the guy I eventually took it to.

I've been using PCs hooked up to comfy couch for a decade now without problems, but yea, you already said that PC had problems. My point is not that you need to decide Series X or PC, you need to decide what you are looking for and choose the platform that gives you that. IMO, the Series X is not a good purchase right now, and PC will give you everything new the Series X will be getting going forward. Keep the One X for BC if you want, but play new games on PC. So I think a PC is a much better buy overall.

Gaming laptops are great for a year or two, but having a non upgradable PC is a lot worse than having a similarly non upgradable console.

Also PCs give you issues. If you had that many troubles with a desktop, I am sure you would also have troubles with a laptop. PCs just will never be "plug and play" the same way a console is.

TBH it sounds like your best bet would be to switch to consoles.

Just throwing this out there, if all you want is a 1440p/60fps desktop PC gaming experience, gaming caliber desktops that fit the bill are cheap as hell these days at places like BestBuy or Amazon. Talking in the $1500 range including a 1440p monitor. If you earn a decent wage you don't need to break the bank picking up /ordering something prebuilt and maybe adding another 16GB of RAM to it, and you can save yourself the hassle of building it yourself.

I realize not everyone is in a good financial position, especially during these pandemic times, but it's not like it was back in the mid 2010's. Gaming PC's, IMO, are cheap these days.

The thing with a laptop is if you have issues you can return it. When you build a PC, as I did, that's not an option. You need to isolate the part that may or may not be faulty. And boy that's a pain in the ass.

Yes I did not think of that, but I think my general point still stands.

If you had 300 games you probably had a good amount that would be played on a lower spec laptop. Perhaps you can go console for newer/more demanding games and a cheaper laptop for older games etc.

I've been looking at pre builds for the same reason I was looking at a laptop. Problem, send it back. The only thing is, I can't help but price the parts and think about how much I could save or build something better for less. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Quite the pickle.

I went laptop route mostly becuase it’s easier for me since I move around a lot. If you are just going to be in one spot and money isn’t to tight I’d go desktop.

Laptop fits my life style way to much to give it up easy.

That's the option I've been leaning towards. The only issue is I'm not convinced that 60fps will be the norm on the next gen consoles going forward. If that was the case, I'd go with that option 100%.

Appreciate all of the replies from everyone.

Go back to PC. If money is not an issue get a pre-built with a warranty and don't worry about it.

Get a Series X or a PC. Wait for PS5 slim on sale in a couple of years and get that for exclusives maybe.

Don't get a Series X and a good gaming PC, the game library overlap will be close to 100%. If you want a PC, complement it with a PS5 instead, which will get a lot of games you can't play on PC or Xbox.

Otherwise, get an XSX OR a PC. Not both, that's just a waste of money.

Trying to understand what you want. I rather recommend you get either a PS5 or PC, but looks like this is not what you want.
I'm not really interested in a PS5 at the minute. Ideally I think I want a mid range PC / laptop to play my existing PC games and the Series X for next gen games. I already sub to Gamepass Ultimate which is paid up for another 10 months or so.

But that high end PC is so tempting.
