New year, new quarter, new thread.

It's 2011 in Nz, so happy new year! Hopefully this year is a productive one from Photography-GAF. Moreover, hopefully I can get out of my rut and contribute more.

To ring it in, here're some shots I took last year (lol) on 3oth December.

EF17-40 F4L, 40mm, f/4.0, 1/640s, iso200

EF17-40 F4L, 40mm, f/11.0, 1/500s, iso200

EF17-40 F4L, 40mm, f/4.0, 1/500s, iso200

EF17-40 F4L, 17mm, f/8.0, 1/500s, iso200

That shot with the horse if beautiful. Amazing atmosphere.

Going to take some portraits tonight of New Years. Will upload when I've finished editing.

Amazing color in your third pic OP. Which camera are you using BTW? took this today

Naughty, naughty. This was taken in the very last bit of Q4 2010 but there you go. Continues my tradition of pointing and clicking with no thought to composition (although with the subject matter it'd be trickier) or settings.

Early November isn't the very last bit of Q4 2010 :lol Where was that taken?

Got my first DSLR for Christmas, a K-r, so I should start posting in this thread this year (first 2011 resolution, yay!)

Currently waiting for my kodachrome rolls to come back from Dwayne's.

Some guy spent 15k to get 50000 slides of trains developed.

I've fallen for my new lens and am basically shooting everything with it. The wider Field of View is like taking blinders off...

And why I got the lens in the first place, low light shooting...

Canon 7D.

BLueTsu, you just got the Nikkor 28mm f/2, right? How are the Ai Nikkor lenses in general? I saw a 50 mm f/1.4 or something for sale secondhand, but it was marketed as a "video" lens for Canon EF.

Most of the AI Nikkors are supposed to be fantastic. Not sure about the 50/1.4 though, I only know how the 50/1.2 AI performs (which is a very good lens). Not sure why it was marketed as a "video" lens though other than the fact videographers are trying to get their hands on older manual focus lenses due to the smooth and precise focus action.

But the Nikkors are a huge bargain. I got mine for $225 and its in perfect condition. Compare that against the Canon thats going for around $500 and seems to be a worse performing lens.

How is this camera working out for you?
I have a Canon 20D, but i'm thinking about upgrading to a 7D.
How is this IQ at iso 1600 for instance?

Thank you! I'm using the Nikkor 28mm f/2 AI. I wrote up a quick impression post here. I'm also using the lens on a Canon Rebel XT.

Oh! And mrkgoo, I definitely love the colors you've captured in your first photo. Lovely pastel look to it. And each of your photos have great impact, especially the horse photo. Has a romantic (not in the "love" sense) quality about it, great emotion, as far as the lighting and subject.

It's the same/better as a 550d, which performs quite good at 1600 compared to older digital cameras (like a 450d or a 50d)

I love it. For reference I move from 350d to 40d to 7d.

On previous cameras I tried to stick to iso100 and was ok with up to 400. I would only use 800 if absolutely necessary. On my 7d I sit on iso200-400 as default and would happily use iso1600 without hesitation. 3200 if necessary. I think it's fair to say that it has hanged the way I take pictures, relying on less IS and using smaller apertures. Also extending my lowlight photo abilities.

That said I have pretty much shifted to raw shooting so maybe my gains have been from that.

I love the 7d controls and af system too.

Blue: thanks for the comments! I'm still impressed with your potos as always. I've been in a bit of a rut the past few months so my photography has gone really downhill and I feel really "snapshot-y".

I'm not much a photographer and I need a much better camera but I thought a few of these shots came out alright

Thanx!. I'm buying it this year. It's an upgrade in every way from my 20D (which i love..).
Now if i could only find some extra cash for the new 70-200 f/2.8..........

So I just tried some 30 year old close up lenses on my 50mm 1.8, looks pretty nice imo. Only thing that sucks is the extreme shallow DOF, it's so hard to keep this under control if you don't have A LOT of light.

so, these aren't pics that i took... as a christmas gift to my wife's grandmother, i scanned a bunch of old pics and gave a shot at restoring some of them.

this is a picture of my wife's mother, age 2, a 48 year old image.

it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be trying to fix it. this is what i got:

mominlawfixed.jpg

sorry if this doesn't belong here, i just thought it was cool, and everyone was super excited. if you'd like to know how i figured it out, some directions follow.

on a very basic level, i ended up using 5 layers, all copies of the base layer, and then adjusted the hue until i got the color i wanted. example, once the grass was green, i labeled the layer "grass" and moved on to the next layer. once i had all my individual layers colored the way i wanted, i erased what i didn't need from each layer and married them all together.

all in all, i think this image took about 45 minutes, but you could probably do it faster after you've done a couple and have a process figured out.

I really need to back into shooting, I haven't broken out the D90 for anything more than product shots for eBay in months. :( I just lost all the drive I had, like a photographic block or something. :(

One of my New Years resolutions is to get my ass out there and try to get over my months long funk.

Quick pic I took last week. I had a split second, wrong lens on my cam and had to shoot through the window :lol but I got the little bugger.
(I took the number of the truck there so it might look a little weird..sorry)

Scythian, I need the lens you have. Gorgeous shots.

Where'd you spend New Years?

Gonna upgrade to a 30mm 1.4 once I have the money. But yeah, the 50mm has treated me well, very cheap lens these days as well.

I spent New Years at Wispy's rooftop party in London. Got to look out across central and see the fireworks. What about you?

After many drives up to the mountains during the rain, I decided to take my camera on New Years Day and see how it went.

Nothing too spectacular but at least I didn't get hit by a car.

love the shot speed, I was going to try something like that saturday morning going to work since it was really foggy in my area, but the camera was home..

what settings did you use?

How are you managing to use a Nikon lens on a Rebel XT? I've got the same camera with the stock lens and some 250mm thing but they both leave a lot to be desired, especially in low light. Just to clarify, this is the lens you're using, right?

I'm using a Nikon F to EOS adapter (from Fotodiox). The particular lens you linked too looks to be the modern variant of their 28mm lens and not the same one. The one I'm using is exactly this one...

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28f20ai.htm

Its manual focus by the way. I've got my camera setup with a precision focus screen from Katz Eye so manual focusing is much easier for me.

Canon also has some primes in this range (their 28mm f/2.8 and 28mm f/1.8) but they're mid range primes and don't perform as some classic manual focus lenses would (which were the top of the heap but being sold at budget prices now). You may want to look into those Canons offerings if you're not interested in manual focusing. Even though they are midrange they can still produce great quality photos.

Coincidentally, my pics above were taken with the 28mm f/1.8.
