Quite good, but I'm guessing you're a pro and qualified for a press pass? I thought the vast majority of golf events don't allow cameras during the tournament.

my day job is with a golf magazine, i shoot and edit for the website.

i purchased my 7D last year and occasionally use it for work, although i shouldn't because they don't pay me for it. i just figure that this isn't the last job i'll ever have, so i might as well try to use my equipment to get the shots i want, put together a new demo, and get the hell out.

and you're right, golf tournaments have a "no photo" rule, mainly because the average spectator doesn't know to hold the shot until the player has struck the ball.

Went out into 10 Degree (fahrenheit) weather to take these shots. About a 4 hour walk altogether, not too smart. Took along my Nikkor 28/2 AI which was the main lens for most of the shots taken and my Zeiss 50mm (since its so small).

**All shots taken with a Rebel XT and a Nikkor 28mm f/2 AI or Zeiss Contax/Yashica 50mm f/1.7

I think I feel a cold comin' on... arghhhh

First shots of the new year. A sunrise looking at Lone Pine Peak and Mount Whitney, and a couple sunset shots at Mono Lake. A great way to bookend a day of skiing on Mammoth Mountain.

Holy crap.

I haven't been shooting a whole lot lately. But just managed to sell a few of my older photos to a Tourism Organization in town. So my shots will appear in a couple of the visitor guides, including the cover of one!

Here're a few shots of the lovely waterfront in my city, random stuff around my house, my fiance, and my friends shooting pellet guns on New Year's Eve:

That's great, congrats. What equipment did you use for these?.

And Schmalz.. very nice!

schmalz: Holy crap indeed. Mind blowing!

Aidan: Good to see some of your pics again! Love them all except the third one (portrait of the girl) - that one seems a bit, well, pedestrian to me. Not as dynamic as your other images.

You know anything you upload to Facebook becomes property of Facebook? I deleted all my photographs and the whole thing a little while ago.
1) it doesnt become property of facebook. If you upload things you are giving them permission to reproduce it. They don't gain full ownership of it.

2) its only anything you upload. If you link it to facebook from say your website or flickr they don't get permission to use it.

3) another reason to watermark. ;-) they use it with your watermark its free advertising for you. If they use it without your watermark you have a lawsuit.

@schmalz - i like the third one the best, the mountains on the left are closer and the reflection is more complete. Nice work all the way around!
What were you standing on? A boat?

"wow can i post it on my facebook wall"

Sure... though I recommend linking it instead of uploading it as mentioned earlier. My site is schmalz.smugmug.com.

"What were you standing on? A boat?"

I was standing right on the lake shore, no boats required :)

Last of the Kodachrome for the time being.

I'm a big fan of them all! Really nice tones.

I went for a drive to see the Twelve Apostles in Victoria Australia (Along the great ocean road) on the weekend. One of the most amazing places I've ever been, unfortunately the photos just don't do it any justice.

i didn't have a tripod until very recently, so all of these are handheld at ISO 1250. the wide shot with the amphitheatre is 1/15 shutter speed, the rollercoaster tower is 1/5th shutter speed.

**edit, i forgot about the curious george pic, ISO 125.

Thanks, I'm actually looking forward to going back to ektachrome slides. Kodachrome scans very blue and I hate doing too much post work. :/

Went in between what it scans like and what the actual slide looks like with these.

Not entirely perfect, but Im fairly happy. Going to have another go at it this week in better conditions, IE daytime and no dirty dishes.

Thanks! Nothing fancy for these shots. Just my aging Rebel XT and either Kit Lens (Canon 18-55) or the cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8.

Thanks! The third one's actually my favourite, though that's thanks in large part for my affinity toward the model.

:)

What's your technique? Would like to try this.

Just put my Canon T1i with the 100mm Macro Lens on the tripod, setup the flash, and let the water drip. Took a bunch of pictures to get a few I liked. Really its trial and error.

That was my strategy. Along with a flash and some coloured paper or something.
Will experiment. Just to have done it at least once :P

How is that 100mm macro working out for you? Amzing lens isn't it?

Im loving it so far. I cant wait until Spring and Summer though. Even though Im sure there are great things to photograph during the winter, it just doesnt do it for me.

A few photos from my motorcycle trip around the South Island of New Zealand. I would post more but they are not very good...

Those are great pictures, burger.

But that top shot triggered a flashback for me:

Man, back in 2003 the cameras were certainly different. This was from a Casio Exilim S1, perhaps the first camera that was ultraportable, being credit card-sized. Fixed focus, no zoom, 2mp, I believe. Cost NZ$700 too :D. And I was a complete noob. I was on a South Island tour as well. Had to set my camera to 640x480 to fit enough pictures on my two memory cards (32 MB and 64 MB, I believe), and no sense of photography whatsoever.

Ah, fun times.

What are you shooting with? Was it the Panasonic? I love the top shot with the use of the flax in the foreground. You'll treasue that shot because flax only flowers that bright red for such a short period, if I remember.

Oh, and a quick tip: At the very least, stick a line in between each photo to stop them from running together.

That is... crazy. Your shot is almost exactly the same as mine, just 7-8 years older! I guess everyone pulls over there to take a photo, it's the perfect place. Still, pretty spooky...

Yeah it was my LX3 for the whole trip. I appreciated the mantra 'get closer' that came with the wide angle 2.5x zoom when I got it, but the lack of zoom is really starting to bug me now, and makes it hard to frame some shots. Still, I appreciate the portability of the LX3, and haven't written it off :)

Heres a quick one that I liked after I slept on it

(Other then the brush messups on it, which don't show up in aperture for some reason :|)

Not sure if this is the correct thread to ask in, but I'm looking for some advice on the purchase of a new camera. I've pretty much decided this is the one I want, but I don't want to find out that a new version of it is coming out in a month and regret buying the one I did. Is there a good technology news site that focuses on new cameras specifically? I guess all I really want is an introductory camera that I can learn with and possibly get some great shots on the side. Here's a picture I took with the same camera when I took it for a test-drive a few months back:

Looking at release dates the predecessor to that camera came out about 2 years ago and I think that particular model came out about a year ago. So it seems likely to me that a new iteration will be arriving soon.

Edit: It looks like the ZS10 will be the new iteration coming out in March.

Don't know if this is any use but:

I got 8 years solid use and learning out of my old Canon Powershot S45 before upgrading to DSLR last month, and what was eventually important to me (as opposed to having all the bells and whistles I could afford at the beginning) was having a decent range of manual and semi-auto exposure controls and good battery life. It was a few years before I started using the manual controls, but after I did I never looked back. The Panasonic seems just fine on those counts, though you might want a spare battery if you are doing long trips.

What didn't matter to me (again eventually!) was whether there was another model around the corner, since I didn't find for a long time that I actually needed any of those upgrades - I was learning just fine with what I had, and it helps a lot being very familiar with the controls of whatever it is you have got.

Either of them sounds like a good starter camera though - enjoy!
