Don't forget the obligatory shot of an adult holding a baby/child's hand!

The first thing I thought when this thread was made was that picture of the doctor holding an unborn infants hands while it was still inside the womb.

My 7-year-old nephew posed for me. :)

Hey everyone, if possible please post your camera and settings. That way others can learn how you did what you did.

Congrats Nachkebia!

My entry:

I cropped it a little and also tweaked the level a little to brighten the picture.

I wish I had access to old people. I saw some examples of photographs of hands like these and by far the most interesting were always the hands of the old. Weathered and wrinkled they were far more fascinating than boring young person hands plus they make you wonder what those hands have been through in their many years.

Not to take away from photos other hands..uhh..nevermind

Great shot

I really like how creative that is. I'm sure it must have taken many shots. Good job!

Me too, but I am curious if it was inspired by El-P?
No, I was over my sister's house and I thought I would get a shot of my nephew's hands with a game controller, but when I saw his orange cap gun I decided to go in that direction instead...cool video, though!

It's been a while since I've entered, mostly because of THIS little guy. At least he gave me entry material this week.

What I was smoking: A bit overly sentimental and sappy (not to mention completely staged,) but I was at a loss.

I really like this one. I didn't even notice the whole body for a few seconds. Very nice.

As for the Vote:

1st: Rayo - it's different and made me giggle when I first saw it
2nd: Puxel - I really like the lighting and the way it blooms in the background in this picture

1st - Xun Really gorgeous lighting, soft tones, great focus. Just a really great photo over-all.

2nd - Papi Very calm photo. Great focusing on the hands, and the violin itself is very smooth. One of my favorite instruments.

Ahh crap. My first assignment I've been able to do in quite some time because of my shoulder surgery, and I'm late. Oh well! Here's mine just for fun.

My votes:

1st - Scythian Empire - Love the premise and tone. Great shot.

2nd - cityhunter - Really unique shot and a fun twist on the theme. :P

1. Xun - I like the creation of emotion with the use inanimate objects, great use of the theme

2. Scythian Empire - these hands tell a story and I'd love to know more

1. City Hunter
2. Xun

Both are creative which gives bonus points from me. I can honestly say ive seen pictures like Skythian Empires picture but I've never seen ones like my two pics.

...

U only voting for one because it's sooooooo much better than all the rest? Or because you don't want to give second place votes to anyone in fear those points will cause that picture to vault ahead of your vote.

Either way, you should really just pick two like everyone else.

1. Papi
2. Xun

I just noticed that my picture looks WAY different here at work (for the worse) than what I saw at home. Any good ways to calibrate my monitor?

First - Scythian Empire - Best straight-up take on the theme, the shallow DOF really makes the detail of the hands pop out vividly.

Runner Up - cityhunter - Nice shot of an interesting subject/setting, I like how the blown-out area of the background centers behind the hand (kinda gives it energy), but I'll nitpick that you shouldn't have cut off that fingertip at the right margin.

Honorable Mention - Xun - Beautiful shot, but not being familiar with the characters, the "hands" connection didn't leap out at me right away. I would have liked to see one where you elevated the lamp a bit to the right in order to fully include both their heads within the circle of light.

have you had any of your images printed?

This happened to me, I posted some images and a couple people here said they looked way to saturated. So when my test prints came from the lab i compared them to my monitor, sure enough they were drastically different. I adjusted my monitor till they matched my prints and went from there.
I know its not exact but its very close and my subsequent prints from the same lab look great.

You can also buy those photo cards, but i found 80 or so bucks to be a bit much.

Your image doesn't look bad on my monitor though, just a little flat for b&w for my taste.

Shiggie, I think your pic would have been better if it was left colored.

The lobster claw would have looked great if it was nice and bright red.

My grandmothers hands. She's been through so much in her life and is still going strong at almost 80 years old. She suffers from arthritis in her left hand and was a little bit resistant of letting me photograph them. She was born and raised in Germany, growing up as a teenager during World War II, she has too many stories to tell. Half German, half French, she met my grandfather, an English soldier, in the midst of the War. They dated, got married after the war and moved to Ghana, where they gave birth to my mother. My grandfather, Cid, died before I was born.

The depth of field in the photo attempts to make the hands stand out as much as possible in order to show how much you can tell from someone's hands, with their face completely out of the photo.
