Gaf Plays: The Golden Sun series

I like how at the end of GS they tell you why Felix/Jenna/Sheba are weak and have crap gear/cash by saying Saturos, Menardi an prolly Alex did all of the fighting. 4 hours into part two and they're getting around a bit better on their own. I had completely forgotten about class changing item! I got Jenna as a tamer and Sheba as a pierrot with Felix as a regular old knight for now. Puzzles are getting more complex and there are way more "looks like I gotta backtrack here later" dungeons. Now I'm off ta Air's Rock to get me some revealing psynergy~

Beat GS1 and moving onto the infamous password entry.

The only thing worse than getting an Invalid Password is not being able to find what you did wrong ;_;

Edit: And just after posting this I find it. b instead of d on the second line. Curses!

Never finished Golden Sun 2. Got up to the part where you fight the indian chief. How close was I to beating the game? Because if I wasn't that close, I want to go back and play it again.

The enemy encounter rate in TLA is much lower then in GS. I've run long stretches and in many circles with few battles ta show for it. Kinda makes grinding hard which made beating Briggs hard since I chose ta face him early.

Air's Rock exterior/interior took me over an hour ta clear an thats with using a guide! All for the sake of Reveal, something that was just handed over to ya with no trouble in GS x_x; The world map is much larger with places further apart and many dead ends which made the trek from AR to Gondowan Cliffs kinda lengthy. Now after 6 1/2 hours Piers is onboard, finally a full team! Now for the dreaded Gabomba Statue!

Was I the only boring one who almost never changed Djinns except maybe when I had all of them?

Naahh thats how I played through my recent run of GS until the Venus Lighthouse when I remembered I could make super classes. And to think it was my 3rd time through that game... :lol I'm mixing and matching in TLA though it sucks having to unequip the class change card and non-jupiter djinn from Sheba each and every time I need ta use Whirlwind >_<; Wish they would had an item that lets anyone be able to use it.

I group my Djinns by element. I'm a total noob at this game. I have had both games for about a year now, but never got around to finishing them.

I just killed a number of Totodiles in Altin, and I really need to know.. What can I do with game tickets? Is there a reason to hoard them, or are they just there for selling back?

Also, could someone tells me a bit about the different classes? At the moment, due to how I keep the Djinns together by element, I have two brutes, a magician and a scribe.

Nope, I rarely messed around with them either. Beat GS1 on my replay just using Isaac 7 Earth, Garet 7 Fire etc.

You use them for a slots game in a town you'll go to later in the game. So might as well hold on to them.

Also beat Air's Rock last night, no guide, wasn't as hard as I expected. It was just long. Very long.

Okay, I feel like an idiot, but in GS I'm backtracking a bit to collect Djinns that I missed. How do you go back through the Mogall Forest? The screens repeat after the second screen.

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm trying to go in through the exit-end of the forest. I need to find my way back to Bilibin. Story-wise, I'm just getting to Kalay.

Beginning the triforcedent hunt now... so I'm like almost halfway through TLA after about 10 hours.

I never backtracked through that crazy forest and if its even possible or not! Ya could try using Force on tree stumps and see if the monster shows the reverse way out? Ya might wanna wait until ya get to Kalay to do any backtracking. There's a cave someplace by it which leads back to the earlier towns.

Once you get to Kalay I think you're able to just cross the bridge to the north that was destroyed earlier in the game if you want to head back, without going anywhere near Mogall Forest.

I have both of the original games complete in box. I have only played the first game for a few minutes to get a feel for it. This thread might give me the boost I need to finally play the games. I did just finish up another game, and I have given up on DK King of Swing (boring and frustrating), so I have one of my two Micros freed up for something new. The other Micro pretty much has Mario Kart Super Circuit permanently stuck in it. I was planning to do Link to the Past for my next GBA playthrough, but maybe I will do Golden Sun instead.

I didn't even know the games had a class system until years after I beat them. My strategy was to fuse the most powerful summons and deal massive damage before the enemy killed me.

Huh, I can't find my copy of Lost Age. I never finished it -- only the first one. I want to play it now, but I think I need to buy a new one. T_T

If you buy a new copy, you will find your old copy. If you do not buy a new copy, your old copy will remain lost forever :D

Thanks, I found it. I wish they would have put a sign up or something... I have reached another dilemma. I accidentally turned down the optional Hammet quest and saved a bit afterwards, as I was going to sleep. Is there any way to actually do this quest now that I turned it down, or am I screwed? I'm only interested in the Djinn at the moment. Do I need to wait until later in the game?

I really wish there would be an "are you sure?" type of deal when you're asked important questions like that.

You could have sold them for like 100$ apiece and bought used copies for about 8$..

Example One and Two.

My copies weren't sealed. I bought them complete in box about a year ago for maybe $20 each from Ebay. The Lost Age even came with the strategy guide, but it's useless to me since I never FAQ-it-up.

Also, sealed copies don't go for that price. That is just some seller being hopeful. The two complete auctions for sealed copies went for $40 and $51.

The Lost Age sealed went for $18!

Amazon is selling sealed copies of TLA for about 100$, but they're also letting you buy used copies as well.

There was a chance for a little profit (I'd pay more for the box), no matter how little.. but that doesn't really matter.

What is it with Gaf, and disillusioning me? D':

Also, could someone who has beaten the game answer my question? I'm kinda hovering around the mansion wondering if I should just give up and move on with the story.

Edit: Nvm. Stupid ledge..

Don't worry, you can still go to the thieves' town and rescue him. I don't think that either game has quests/djinn/items that you cannot get, even if you backtrack. The only point of no return is after the final boss for both games.

I just wanted to nab the Djinn before going, thinking I needed to go through the Mansion's basement to get there. I found another entrance though. :)

I like to collect power-ups, even if there is a little leeway offered. On the topic of Djinns, can someone explain to me how to change classes? Does it matter which Djinn you switch over, or can it be just any of the right elements? I'm just starting the Altmiller Cave, and I have six Venus, and five each of the rest. Are there any classes available to me that are better than simply stacking the same type of Djinn onto the respective Adept?

This is confusing, because just switching around the Venus Djinns, Isaac went from Gallant to Lord.

Classes are determined by the types of Djinn you have equipped on a character. There's a bunch of them, all listed here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/gba/468548-golden-sun/faqs/14706

You can finish the game by just stacking the same type of Djinns on their respective elemental users. You will have a very limited pool of psynergy, but it's the easiest method for summon rushing.

I also like having a lot of attacks available to me :P Thanks for the link!

Ten second into the game and we are shown that the mother is a bitch. After she wakes up Isaac and is leading him downstairs, she asks if he got everything he needed. If you select "no" she basically says "too bad, let's go". I'm wondering why she even bothered to ask if she wasn't going to allow him to get something he forgot.

Just finished Gaia Rock and read Kushinadas mind. Camelot planned far ahead... or did they? I dunno cause I've been keeping my eyes & ears closed to Dark Dawn stuffs! Just one more month ta go! Now ta get the last prong, finish some optional stuff, then at long last head to Lemuria after the enormous amount of cockblocking this trident quest has provided! :lol

Phew! I played the heck outta the game yesterday and am now up to Magma Rock. Just a little more to the end of the story... but of course I'ma do all the optional stuff that still remains. Just freaking stinks it takes until the final dungeon to get the ability to teleport >_<;

To get to the top of the Jupiter Lighthouse took me roughly the same amount of time my clear game file for GS was (18h 46m)! The slot machine in Contigo is way more stingy then the one in Tolbi cause boots would hardly ever come even close to lining up for me. No hyper boots for Felix ;_; (well I'll just steal one from the other team but still). The Sea of Time wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had remembered it an really none of the dungeons have been to crazy hard/long besides Air/Jupiter. Darn wind adepts!

After reading your post about it I did the same and yeah, that is pretty cool. I will be looking out for this Takeru to come to my aid!

Also man, I'd forgotten how much TLA drops you off a cliff when you finally get the boat. Try to go to Lemuria, fail, then... well, that's about it, the guidance stops. Rather than go from point A to point B you sort of wander/sail around aimlessly hoping that where you end up happens to be point B :lol I've somehow stumbled on 2 of the trident prongs now so tonight I'll get back to going around aimlessly again trying to find where the others are. I'd probably check in a guide but I'm being stubborn and refusing to use one.

The ability to sleep the system anytime by holding the shoulder buttons is awesome. Some games have a sleep feature but you have to enter the menus or something. This allows me to sleep at a moment's notice.

I also appreciate being able to save anywhere, anytime.

I remember playing the second one and getting to the final boss.
Damn that was a long fight.

I beat the final boss with no Djinn up and only Mia alive.
Single physical attack killed him.
I was like "Holy crap! Finally!"

This is probably the only game that I stopped playing after a few minutes because of the loud as fuck annoying sound effects.

Its kind of a shame, yes, but hey, thats what happened.

Good luck... I got lost using a guide and world map pic and this is my third time playing the game!

I wonder if these were the first handheld games with sleep mode? Also in TLA they change it to L+R+Select for whatever reason. Still very useful and much appreciated!

The reward for killing Deadbeard was pretty disappointing in GS. D:

The battle itself is the reward!

This is a series I like, but have a lot of trouble replaying because the drawn-out dialouge is unbearable. Most of the text is just one character repeating what another said. Very annoying.

But there is a certain "Nintendo charm" to the games that are unmatched.

o.O

I can only assume you are talking about the sound the game makes when characters talk, as the battle, environment, and other sounds are perfectly normal. It is really a shame if this is true, as there is an in-game option to turn off the dialog sounds.

Can't you turn down the SFX volume? I don't remember.

I have to agree about a lot of the dialog seeming superfluous. I am not usually one to feel like I want to rush past the text, but sometimes it gets ridiculous.

Here is an example of what you will see in this game:

<wizard> Oh, these are the powerful jewels. Do you want me to tell you more about them?
Yes/No?
<you> Yes.
<wizard> There's no time for that. Let's go.

Another example:

<wizard> These are the powerful jewels. Have I ever told you about them?
Yes/No?
<you> Yes. (attempting to skip the full explanation)
<other party member> WAIT, YOU NEVER TOLD MEEEE!
Wizard proceeds with full explanation...

There have probably been two dozen Y/N questions in the game for me so far, and not a single one ultimately affected the outcome or dialog tree.

Hey, guys. In GS, can you go back into the Venus Lighthouse's middle room/entrance to try and farm for the K-Sword? I got tired of farming and decided to go into the Lighthouse and ended up ending the game... Which led to a small amount of time where you run around before the credits, which is where I have a save. I'm very glad I saved there, because of that stupid thing where they won't let you access your clear file.

So, did I screw myself out of the K-sword? What other items are "essential" to get for the transfer to TLA?

You can't explore anymore after you beat the final boss, so you can't get it from that save. It's not a big deal imo, you can get better weapons in the sequel. As for essential items, I'd advise you to take the Cleric's Ring with you, as TLA doesn't have it. And bring along your best armour/weapons. TLAs endgame content is better, but your original items are pretty good immediately after the reunion.
Also, if you really want it (or another item), don't farm but use the RNG method (Gamefaqs has a nice explanation, along with one specifically for the K-sword). You are cheating the system, but it's not like farming is such a great way.

I was actually farming to get Garet's agility up to par for the RNG method to work for the K-sword, but ran out of patience on the way home from school earlier today. I was hoping to get that, and a few more agility altering weapons as well as the swift sword (at least you can get this from the shop) before swapping over D:

I guess I might as well try that password thing now, since I cannot do anything else with GS. I wonder why they don't let you leave the village.. The bottom of the Venus tower is apparently flooded, so I get that one.

wtf how did I never know killing enemies with the right element djinn unleashes grants more exp/gold/drop rate?? I'm so glad I decided againsting grinding to L50 in GS cause its SO much easier in this game with djinn kills vs Wonder Birds! I'm through 3 of the 4 optional dungeons & bosses now and working my way to L54 for all party members to unlock the last psynergies then its off to get smacked around by Dullahan then ta smack around the final boss!

How much harder is "Hard Mode" than the standard difficulty in TLA? My copy of the game is used and game with a cleared file, and I selected hard on a whim. How much more of a beating can I look forward to?
