GAF Steam Sale Hunt

Great new contest idea, inspired by my nightly experience yesterday: Successfully mod Fallout3 with more than 10 mods and play 1 hour without crashes.

-_-

Edit:
Quick reminder for the new page that we now have a Steam group for our GAF steam sale hunt. Updated with new challenges, I'll probably drop a line when we are about to vote/live update.

We can also use this to communicate a bit over there if GAF is offline for too long.

Playing through the New Vegas DLC with lots of mods and accessing a new area through a door or via quick travel is like playing Russian Roulette. At least 1/6 loadingscreens end up freezing and the game crashes.

I'm not going to win that contest

You had many crashes?

Yes, thats what I was implying. I am on Win7 too, which apparently is not supported and makes things even worse than they already are. Fixing this game to be actually playable is like a herculean task.

First time I modded Fallout with a very deep mod. It doesnt get better in New Vegas? Bummer.

That one'll definitely need more than 24 hours. Unless people feel they don't need sleep.

You should Contest-review it! :p

Already played through the whole game 5 years ago or something. However, I never played any of the DLC and I want to install the Hardcore mods + new content mods available. Some really seem interesting.

Considering the times it may take to actually play it for 1 hour without crashing after finding 10 mods that go together well, I'd say even 48 hours is pushing it. God damn, what a nightmare.

Haiku version:

Let me play Fallout,
with mods to make it nicer.
Constant game crashes.

Nope. Luckily the crashes occur after a autosave so it's not that big of a set back. But this taught me to abuse the hell out of the (quick)save function.

Are you using the Fallout Nexus? Because you should. Makes it so much easier to install your mods

Actually, while I'm rambling about Trackmania checkpoints: A real bugbear of mine that's actually distressingly common on community tracks is a tendency to place checkpoints in an area where you can't actually *use* them; if you respawn there, you have to back up to get some speed up before making the next jump.

Touch wood I don't *think* I've fallen into that trap! It's something to investigate when playtesting, though.

I think I was guilty of this once or twice in my track. I realized it at the time but figured that if anyone was going for a record time then they'd do a full restart. I know the one spot I'm thinking of shouldn't be a big deal though.

I dont think you can NOT use the Nexus, lol. Every website I found for mods linked me to the Nexus.

That is indeed correct and probably not a big concern. And if there are shortcuts it will still take some skill to actually use it in the proper way for the best time.

I think it's less for the actual time trials, and more for the couple of dry runs where you're getting a feel for the pace of the track.

Dammit, now I want to go back and make a new track with a heavy focus on skill-based shortcuts, with a nice easy 'normal' route through it.

Can anyone with Nations confirm that my track runs fine in it, by the way?

Sure, did you post it already? Sorry, just now updating the contest entry list with your entries.

Contest #15: Show us your ABoImination

Here's my go of it. Although I'm not even sure if this one should count, as I was playing as Maggy and had my blonde wig and red bow on, automatically making me a pretty, pretty princess. I have my spelunking helmet on for safety though, then I think I accidentally got some pasta sauce on my mouth. Topping it all off is Squeezy Eyes.

All laid in front of a beautiful backdrop of piss and blood.

Mount & Blade: Warband
Time played: 79 minutes

So I decided to start with the multiplayer on this one, as that looked kind of fun on youtube. You get to choose between a few different classes depending on the faction you play, but it seems they're all essentially archer, infantry and cavalry. You got these huge battles with possibly hundreds of players, and with that many people it's chaotic to say the least. Objectives depend on the game mode, for instance there's a "Siege" mode where one faction is trying to capture a castle.

I had a good time riding around trying to cut down crossbowmen busy trying to reload, but it was rather rare I was able to kill someone. I guess you need to learn the timing of things, esp when you're on horseback, but the hit detection doesn't seem to be the greatest even with a low ping. I also tried some archery but that was even more difficult.

In some ways at least the multiplayer portion feels like a cheap mod, but it's still original enough that I want to try it again. Also will try the singleplayer since I've been hearing comparisons to Sid Meier's Pirates!.

I got this in the Botanicula bundle, so I figured it was a quirky point and click game. And I was right. You start in a dark screen, with a couple of things visible. You can interact with them and you can move some of them, but they seem confined. Clicking the light bulb reveals a screen filling box with multiple compartments, each with interact-able objects.

Such as a clock that hides a bird. Or a ball and a couple of papery limbs of different animals, both physics-based. In the lower right corner you find some sort of toy car and a door. The goal of each room is basically to open the door and roll your toy car through it. Spoiler of how you can open every door:
by inserting a small square
.
And in the next room you try to do the exact same thing. Open the door and roll your car to the next room. Every room has a new theme with different objects, not all of them required to complete the room. For example in my first screen shot I removed the leaves from the trees and threw them around. In my second screen shot the tower with the bird tracks your car. My solution to the different rooms so far was just finding out where you click on and keep clicking until I'm done :P
It looks nice, there's no soundtrack. I don't know if I will play it again. I'm not very fond of pixel hunting the screen and just trying random combinations of actions.

CONTEST #14

I played Lone Survivor, one of the bonus games from the latest HIB.

Immediately, the art style drew me in as a fan of pixel/voxel art. They pulled off some amazing things with such a limited resources. As the game progressed, it started feeling like a pixelated Silent Hill (some nice graphic overlays to add mood -- fog effects, sanity loss blurriness, etc)

Anyways, the game keeps introducing new concepts/angles at a nice pace to keep you interested in playing. Once I reached the 15 minute mark(?) I wanted to keep playing, which is the surest sign it worked :D

Very atmospheric game. Horror can be difficult to pull off in videogames (some resort to gore which doesn't cut it for me). Nice blend of stealth and horror as well. Best horror game since Amnesia, IMO.

I'll definitely keep playing this one.

It's part of Indy Bundle I on sale this summer.. highly recommended!

After some puzzling which game to try from my backlog, I remembered that I had not yet tried inMomentum even after listening to it's awesome soundtrack so many times. Really guys, check this one out if you haven't.

And after playing it with around 14-15 mins, it feels somewhat odd, being a bit of a racing/puzzle jumping game either in first person or third. I think I probably would enjoy this more after more tinkering with controls, I mean jump in right mouse button?

Game does give a slight TRON-vibe with it's really basic but colourful graphics, but they do work in game.

Probably should come back to this game when I have more time and less games to play. And perhaps after I've been accustomed to fps-games again.

Contest #15
Oh boy, has The Binding of Isaac changed after Wrath of Lamb expansion, tons of new stuff and tons of way to me to die, which meant I didn't get to get nice abominations. But here's one Isaac and Cain.
Really should start playing more Isaac, to get my skills back and learn the new stuff that has been added.

Contest #14

Bought Amnesia during the sale and thought can't be that scary. Guess i was wrong, but i'm not really into this kind of games. So it went like this:

First "shock moment" -> Pause -> Save and Exit -> Back to Steam Library

Would love to play more, but only during the day ;).

Contest 14

Critical Mass

This is a puzzler in the vein of puyo pop, but with a 3d twist that your blocks fall onto a rubix cube like center block that you can spin around to your liking.
It's a typical indie game in that sense that the base game mechanic idea is quite nice but then it falls a bit flat.
won't play it again

Contest #13 - Trackmania

This is my first track, so it totally sucks. Sorry in advance, lol.

Here's the file.

Screen:

Yes I'm using the simple editor shutup.

I downloaded it and played it. The only advice I have would be to add checkpoints because there are a few places where you can accidentally fly over to another piece of track and cut off a good amount of time from your race. Having said that, I tried for 20 minutes but couldn't actually finish the track lol. There are times when there's a boost that will send you flying off the track if you don't slow down and other times where you have to go full speed or you won't make the jump. I like it a lot.

This is all I've managed within the time limit, not great but acceptable.

I like the chubby Isaac power-up (and the 2 extra heart slots that come with it).

Watching IWBTGG tonight inspired this late Haiku

Floe you died, floe floe
you died, floe you died, floe floe
you died, floe you died

Damn you btw. That song is stuck in my head the whole day.

Game: Dark Void Zero

Holy crap this is a NES game. They really captured that 8-bit style, unlock most "retro" games which claim to be that style yet look too advanced. Unsure if I like it yet, the controls feel a little off, though that's probably just because I was using the d-pad on my 360 controller.

Thanks. :)

I do need at least another checkpoint in the first part of the race, I know.

Don't worry about not finishing; it was kind of a pain to validate, lol.

Shank

I was very much looking forward to Shank when it was first announced, but some less than flattering review scores turned me away. I finally picked it up in one of the Humble Bundles. I'm enjoying it so far even though I don't have a full grasp of the combo system yet. The voice acting is pretty disappointing, but I love the visual style.

Joining in pretty far into this whole shebang, looks like it'll be fun.

Contest #13

This isn't true for most people, but my favorite tracks are basically gimmick courses. Do one single thing and you're done.
Like tackling this floating balancing beam:
Yeah, there's a lot of doodads.

Also included: Nonsensical custom music in true trackmania fashion

And download link, for the few who may want it.
It's really something that would fit better on a server. Watching other people's cars meteor to the ground would be great.

Contest #14

For this, I decided to try out an old indie 'thing' a friend made me buy a long time ago, under the guise that "it'd be really great for multiplayer." He hadn't even played it.

It's basically a low-rent RTS/capture the flag/zoning game.

After doing the tutorials and starting a real game, the quickest thing that stood out, is there's no standard resource gathering. You start with set gold, and you gain more by turning builder units into towers, that just instantly give a set amount of gold. But towers must be so far away from each other and maps are small, so there's a fight for territory constantly. You could also turn those builders into spell towers, which are global use, but with a long-cooldown, and every one is pretty damn strong.

So the building itself is quite novel, but then army mechanics are pretty light. There's no tech tree, and no fog of war. Just watch what the other guy's doing, and make counters. All small army/lone unit stuff.
If a unit dies, you get back all the gold from it, and can build a new one at your base within 3 seconds.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of depth, and the game speed is slooow, but due to the build speed/instant gold return/instant spells, it's actually nerve-wracking. Watching your newly made defenders take 40 seconds to move across half of the map to get your 'flag' back, only to get mass-frozen because you didn't notice a new tower the enemy had built is upsetting.

I'd have to play more to get a broader sense of tactics, but it's just really different from most RTS games overall. Might play more. I can't really say.

Contest #15

Finally, some faceless, beam-showering Maggy w/ Meatboy.
